    I was heading in to my local guitar shop to pick up the 50's in Tobacco when lo and behold on the counter was a 50's in Cherry SB that a guy returned 15mins prior-decided he preferred a gold top- they discounted it 1,000 so I bought it then and there. I think the 50's sounds sweeter and love the neck profile. The Alnico 5's of the 60's sounds a little generic to my ear, especially with high gain, the clean might be on par with the alnico 2's. Anyway, great review, glad Gibby's are back!!

      @@dannysartain4198 I can not decide between the 50s an 60s.. One thing I know is that I want the one with the more brighter pickups. I hate the MUD of humbuckers, some call it warmth, I call it mud. Does the 50s have a nice bright top end?

    • @DesignInNature
      @DesignInNature Před 4 lety +7

      jarry Dee Yes, the 50’s has the brightest top end out of the two. The pickups on the 60s are higher output, and thus hotter. They both sound great. However, while the bottom and top end of the 50s is more defined and less compressed than on the 60s, they are BOTH Burst bucker pickups. Those are by their very nature, what you describe as “Muddy”. I think you will still not be too happy with the sound on the 50s model. Maybe you are a Stratocaster or Telecaster player at heart? I’m the total opposite. I always thought I was a Strat man, because it’s what I learned on and all other guitars felt and sounded weird to me. I gravitated to their single coil, focused straight sound because of Hendrix, SRV, Clapton and Blackmore. Not to mention they are much cheaper than Les Pauls. Then one day I walked into a guitar shop and grabbed a cheap Gibson Les Paul tribute, and was FLOORED by the sounds I could get plugged straight to a cheap Fender modeling amp. It was like a Gary Moore or Slash type of long, singing sustain and grit to the tone. Mind you, that guitar was ugly, but still cheaper than a standard Strat. It was all Gibson for me after that. I bought a 60s Gibson Les Paul this year. I would love to be able to buy a 50s one to own the pair, but I could barely afford the first one to begin with. Either one is outstanding. If you like a clearer, more focused top end, the SG models for this year are VERY good and cheaper than the Les Paul. Otherwise you can buy either the 50’s or 60’s Les Paul, with the Knowledge that you will likely change the pickups for Seymour Duncan 59’s, or something else that really gets the clear, bright PAF sound on a Les Paul. I hope this helps.

      @@renato6586 Its a two piece cap but a solid back with no weight relief so it sounds ever so slightly warmer and fuller. The no weight relief makes it heavier and in my opinion feel better to hold and play.

    Got the 50’s Tobacco Burst. Fricking great. Not as good as my PRS 594 but damn good for the price. Just wondering if the 60’s neck would have been better... the combination of 12” radius and fat neck are a bit of a mismatch for me... if fretboard were 10” it might flow a bit better when playing w/such a fat neck. The combination of fat neck & flatter radius feels like you have to reach w/fingers to really fret the notes ... and the action is lower so your fingertips have to dig a bit more to ensure you catch the strings on bends. my hands are not small. Love the fat neck but have a 60’s neck on a studio LP and it’s more effortless to play. The burstbuckers on 50’s standard are very good but not as great as my PRS 58/15 LT’s. The PRS patten vintage neck is fat but not as rounded c so not as cumbersome. Tension on the 50’s standard is a bit too slinky w/10’s but PRS tension/feel is spot on. PRs is obviously much more money so the 50’s standard is one hell of a guitar for the price... i can see the 50’s standard becoming my #1 after I give it more time & practice.

    I mean if you gonna get the 60s might as well get yourself a second hand esp eclipse cause you clearly have no idea what a proper les paul sounds like . even in the 50s one the pickups need immediate replacing . killer playing and review tho

      They did try something new in 2015(I think) with robot tuners, wider necks etc. and everybody hated 'em . That's why they went back to the tried and tested formula.
