When John Sullivan died people were replying how much of a genius he was.
Roy Clarke is also like John another genius of comedy.
Of course Last of the Summer wine, Keeping up Appearances, Open all Hours and of course Still open all Hours.

Those were nearly all English sitcoms. Check out the Scottish "Still Game", the Welsh "High Hopes" and the Northern Irish "Give My Head Peace"

Yes and yes again to this show. The main characters are superbly cast, it brings a philosophy of life to current times that almost doesn’t exist any more, and it’s peaceful tone adds a layer of calmness and contentment difficult to find today. Then, add the scenery, and you have a masterpiece. Thanks.

Though it is exaggerated for the programme the women of this generation often controlled their husbands every movement. In the 1990s and early 2000s I worked in a catering establishment where we would regularly get coach parties of retired couples and it was always the wives who made the decisions about what to eat, where to sit etc. My theory of this is that these men have hardly had to make a decision their entire lives as when they were young their mothers would have done everything for them, at work most of them would have had menial jobs or been in the armed forces taking orders from bosses or superior officers. Their wives would probably have been full time housewives and mothers running ever aspect of their married lives so when the men retire they are totally subservient to them
