    In this video I watched Scotland lose their opening game of UEFA EURO 2020 against Czech Republic. Whilst I couldn't be at the new Hampden Park, I watched just over the road at Scotland's first, original home - Hampden Bowling Club. I even interviewed Scotland fans before the match!
    In the end, the Czech Republic were too strong as Patrik Schick netted a brace. Andy Robertson had a good chance. Lyndon Dykes also missed a hatful. Was David Marshall at fault for the second goal? Comment below.
    Can Scotland progress past the group stages of EURO 2020 after such a disappointing first match?

    As a Czech fan, I am of course over the moon at the victory, but not too optimistic for either side's prospects against Croatia and England. I thought that yesterday's game could have gone either way, the Scots had a lot of chances and were basically thwarted by good goal keeping and a lack of cutting edge up front - there was just this bit of a lack of quality. A lack of quality players on both sides showed on various occasions, which is why I think that both Scotland and the Czech Republic have to up their standards if they want to have a chance in the remaining group fixtures. I think the criticism of Marshall is grossly unfair - he had a lot of good saves, and just made one mistake - but a keeper's mistake is always very visible, and he was very unlucky that Schick did so brilliantly in terms of execution. While both sides lacked a bit of quality, you can't fault the effort and heart both teams put in. Let's see what happened next - as Scotland fans, don't forget that the Czechs lost their first group game in 1996 in the Group of Death against Germany (0-2) and performed terribly. They were 150-1 outsiders to reach the final, yet beat Italy in the second game, made it to the knock-out stages and after that all the way to the final, which they almost won. So you never know, not all is lost for Scotland!

      Czechs also drew Russia 3-3 in their last game, leading 2-0, losing 2-3 and equalising in the dying seconds by Šmicer which meant qualifying for knockout:-)

    I'm not devastated Sam. Realistically, the Scotland squad just don't have enough quality, especially in the final third, and were up against a team that are very decent to say the least at international level. I honestly thought Scotland gave a very good account of themselves. Apart from a couple of defensive errors we might have gotten a draw out of that. Proud of the lads. They will really need to up their game and play well above themselves if they want to get anything out of the matches against England and Croatia though.

    I've felt all along the hype was over board in all honesty. We got there through the back door. Yes, it's great to be on this stage again, but we're simply not at a level to justify being there.
    The script was written before this tournament even kicked off. We always find a new 'Scottish' way to blow it and yesterday was spectacular. Why Marshall was so far off his line is absolutely baffling, there's always a chance that the opposition could break quickly and punish you and it just so happened to come about in the opening game.
    I'd always felt we had to win that game yesterday to have any chance of qualifying from the group and i stand by that. We're out. We were out by half time in all honesty. You look back at our history in tournaments and it's failure all the way. It's odd when you do look at it, the number of times we've just not got that wee slice of luck when it's needed. It's a catalogue of tough luck stories, both in Finals and qualification.
    I wouldn't now be surprised if we went to Wembley, dominate for 85 minutes, lead 1-0 and England batter us for the last 5, then score in the last minute. We'll then need to beat Croatia to qualify. We'll be 2-0 up at half time and conspire to draw the game, or win 2-1 and go out on goal difference.
    Equally, i wouldn't be surprised if we lost 3-0 at Wembley then lost 2-0 to Croatia.

    • @neilboulton9813
      @neilboulton9813 Před 3 lety

      @Eagle-Owl Smythe - at last there is some realism spoken, it is hardly mentioned that the qualification was through the back door to a tournament that UEFA has decided to expand with the only outcome to dilute the overall quality. Scotland have never had the advantage of playing two games at home and a third in a stadium again with very little travelling and that the players could be familiar with. I tell you what watch the narrative if England don’t win by at least 3 clear goals, as the Scottish media and fans will say it was a still a moral victory, even though in days gone by they would never have considered any loss at Wembley acceptable.

    I'm old enough to know that you cannot take anything for granted when it comes to Scotland playing football. Many, i have spoken with, thought we would win this game quite comfortably. I was quickly ridiculed for saying the Czechs are a better team than us. Although, there was not much between the sides during the game, well apart from, they had a top class striker, we had Dykes. But in typical Scottish fashion, we get beat from the teams that we should be taking something from, get results when we are huge underdogs, then get papped out on goal difference.
