I was raised by Christian parents. Here's a typical "lesson" I was given as a kid:
(Age 7 or 8, driving to the bank with windows open, going about 50mph. In an instant I hear a high pitched sound fly past the window)
    Me: What was that Dad?
Dad: That was the Holy Spirit!
    Me: (Looking confused)
Dad: Whenever we hear those unexplained noises, that's the Holy Spirit letting us know He's with us.
Me: Wasn't that the same kind of bird we have in our yard?
Dad: Don't be difficult, I already told you what it was.
Looking back I was confused because the bird sounded so strange. Years later, thanks to secular education, I learned about the Doppler effect and how it changes the pitch of sounds as you pass by them (or vice versa).
Faith education is mis-education and it sets children back decades, period.

@Kevin Tewey - Love your comment!! Of course we all know that Blair's own conversion to Catholicism had a lot to do with these decisions. There have been a few cases where these religious schools were prosecuted for their terrible conditions, and discovered to be teaching bigoted (even dangerous, violence inciting) ideas about gender equality, sexuality, etc. etc. - not to mention their denial of science.
The only thing that surprises me about these cases is that anyone was surprised!! What exactly did the government expect when they agreed to fund faith schools, and gave them the right to opt out of the national curriculum? Did they think that they were going to teach a liberal, up to date view of reality?
And none of these issues addresses what is perhaps the worst problem of these schools - the separation of children from their wider community - from all who do not practise their faith as they do.
Not sure how these schools do anything other than foster division and, as you say, create religious extremists.
I have no problem with people pursuing their own religions and holding on to their cultures, but these schools are not the answer!

The word 'hate' is mentioned in the book 6 times, once while talking about hate speech as a part of free speech, twice when talking about how religious people hate others, once about the hate mail he receives and twice while quoting. The word 'hatred' is mentioned 3 times and all detailing hatred of a religious group against others. So Dawkins never talks about hating religion or the religious let alone Christianity.
"not one drop of intellectual prowess to it"- I have already presented how your bias is distorting your notions, because Dawkins never talks about hate or disgust towards religion. So I would stick to the reviews by the Guardian and the Sunday times to gauge whether it was intellectual, not a rando on youtube who does not know what he/she is talking about.
As I said, being poetic has no link whatsoever with being a Professor, but if you want to know what it was I found poetic, it was the comparison of the Burkha to our lives, and the amount of knowledge we can have.

Education and church don't belong in the same environment. “The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it, Lawerence Krauss. ” Teaching about our multicultural world is valuable, however dogma in schools is a different story. I was brought up in various k-12 private fundamental faith institutes and went to them 1-2 times a week, such as Heritage Christian School and Christian Family School, the curriculum used was dogmatic and dishonest, the teachers were just moms that were not qualified as teachers. In America, Christian parents that decide to homeschool their kids can improvise the rules on their academic progression. There is no concern of your academic comprehension or growth,. I had to teach myself the books I was given when I was at home and did not understand anything because I did not have a teacher.. or an honest book. In my opinion this type of private "education" is child abuse, most definitely should not be forced into public schools. The fundamental Christian culture wants kids to be sheltered to obtain a stagnant mindset on the world so they can develop the strongest faith as possible. And the purity culture is very toxic to girls, I remember being forced to attend a fundamental faith group called "keepers at home" as an adolescent you are taught how to be a house wife, I hated it, baking bread and doing laundry is boring and suppressive. I cant speak for everyone, but from my experience in the U.S, faith school organizations are just a political stomping ground and restricts your opportunity to properly learn. Critical thinking skills are crucially needed during development to overcome arrogance, in my experience, without it, you divide yourself from others. Creationism is pseudoscience, it is anything but academic education. Church and state needs a divorce.

I had a talk with an acquaintance of mine who happens to be a devout Muslim and for the most part we get along very well with him treating his faith as a private affair and me keeping my Atheism private. One time we happened to be discussing various violent and political moves happening across the board and he was mostly upset that because of a few maniacs the entire religion is being scrutinized and how it was not fair.
I explained to him that the prime reason for people pointing the finger at Muslims was not because they are simply Muslim. I explained that a lot of us know that a good chunk of them are decent people and that is unquestionable however, what is perceived as troubling is that whenever something bad happens as a result of extremism is that we only hear "Oh, they are not real Muslims", "Islam is religion of peace" and that is where it stops. In short its not that they are Muslim, its that they never condemn the deeds publicly nor do we see any efforts by the faithful trying to resolve this issues. Just to prove my point I added that this applies to all faiths and that whenever we see some Christian, Jewish, Hindu or other believer with an extreme stance do something horrible one of the first things that happens is that the leaders of that organisation tends to publicly condemn the act, does internal investigations and at least try to prevent future incidents.
Inability to change and adapt as time goes on is a sure way for anyone or anything to cease to exist over time.

Excellent documentary, it was interesting. I and my now ex husband are Christians, we sent all 4 of our children to C of E schools and although they attended church with us when young we also ensured that they learnt the other side of subjects discussed at school and in church and how the world today looks at these things. If they didn't want to go to church with us when older they didn't have to, they all grew up to be atheists but still have respect and an understanding of all religions but do not believe themselves. We did not have them christened much to both families disappointment because we decided to let the children decide on which if any religion they wish to follow. And my grandchildren are being given the same experience, I have taken them to church with me and we have also visited other churches, mosques and other worship places so they get to have as many different experiences we can provide. They also learn evolution and science from their father who is highly intelligent as is my daughter. My sons have said they would do the same if they had children although they do not wish to have any until they are in their late 30's if at all and not late 20's like their sister.

I teach casual in Sydney public schools. When I go to a new school if I have some time I go and look for Richard Dawkins books, particularly The Magic Of Reality. Not one to be found! A science head-teacher said to me recently, when discussing chaplains in schools, 'if we didn't have religion where would morals come from?' There's a slow, a slow train coming, coming round the bend...

As KJV UK & you (Oliver) point out not all Christians are that bright, some are still ignorant of science and seem to like it that way. Luckily very few in the UK but much more magical thinking goes on in the USA.

As useful as the German system is, it lacks the 'freedom' the US system has. I think the problem for US system isn't necessarily the structure but the administration. Teaches in many cases aren't allowed to teach. They have to adhere to strict guidelines that may or may not be conducive to learning. Good teachers need the ability to be dynamic with lesson in order to best cater to students. Also, in many districts, schools can't get rid of bad teachers. This just the tip of the iceberg.

American here. Teachers not including substitutes are required to have at least a Bachelor's degree. Including a teachers certificate. Which in some colleges or universities include being a student teacher (you go to local school and intern). And hand full of other classes specific to teaching. It's like a minor (Associates in Education) and a major in whatever main concentration.

Very well done documentary. Many good points were raised. There was one point where Dawkins compares conflicting rights mentioning the right not to be offended. I’m not entirely certain this can be considered to be a right. If it were, I know a few people that are perpetually being persecuted because of their own tendency to be offended at the slightest slight.
