PLOT: When a retired opera singer leaves her inheritance to her cat, Duchess (Eva Gabor), and three kittens, the woman's butler drugs the cats and abandons them in the countryside in order to inherit the fortune himself. Lost in unfamiliar territory, Duchess and the kittens meet Thomas O'Malley (Phil Harris), an alley cat willing to help them return to their home in Paris. They meet several kooky characters along the way, including two English geese and an alley cat jazz band.

You know….looking back, I can understand Edger’s frustration. He’s worked for the grand Duchess for years and yet he is second to the woman’s felines. She’s not exactly being sound minded when writing this will of hers.
She means Edgar would be inheriting her fortune and everything else she's leaving, including the cats. The cats would become his responsibility; he would have to look after them for the rest of their lives and only spend a small amount to keep them fed and pay for vet bills. Clearly, Edgar is too stupid to figure that out because what are the cats going to do with the inheritance. She just wants the cats to be properly cared for when she's gone as they are like her children and Edgar getting her inheritance is her way of thanking him for his loyalty and for taking good care of her cats. He only has to wait until she passes before he gets the inheritance.

Um, the Frenchwoman that Edgar has worked for is NOT the Grand Duchess. She's a retired opera actress who has made a lot of money throughout her career.
She considers her pets to be her greatest treasure as if they were her own children since she never married or had children of her own throughout her lifetime and career. Edgar is superstitious enough to believe in the old wives' tale of cats having 9 lives, which they don't. His overhearing of his employer's discussion about making her will with her eccentric lawyer via speaking tube has clearly made him misunderstand that her pets receive her inheritance all the while Edgar will control her fortune on behalf of keeping the cats healthy and whatnot until they've lived out their lives fully and then everything she owns will revert to Edgar.

This was my favorite movie when I was younger, I just watched this on Disney Plus.
I can’t believe how much I needed this calm way of people/animals interacting from the old days. Everything in nowadays life is so hype and over the top and everbody needs instant attention and satisfaction ALL THE TIME!

Oh , don't worry, I get exactly what you mean, I really don't like that too, I miss all this. Plus everybody nowadays wants characters to have personalities...how can they have personalities if they barely talk and the rest is all action and fast plot?

That's a really good point. I really like this casual way characters interact in these classic movies. Nowadays a lot of animated movies have characters constantly being over the top and saying quips. The only recent movie I can think of where characters interacted casually is in the beginning parts of Coraline, though that movie came out in 2009.

After inheriting that fortune, Duchess and her kittens regenerated all that money from the performances by Scat Cat and his gang of alley cats (who joined the group after helping Thomas O'Malley save Duchess and the kittens from Edgar) and Thomas O'Malley has become stepfather to Duchess' kittens. I like to believe that Thomas O'Malley got a new gig as a magician performing acts in which he made Duchess disappear, and that Duchess has said "I LOVE getting made disappear."

as a child I never liked Amelia and Abigail I found them annoying and quite ignorant I still feel that same way now today too I just don't like them as characters

The kittens must all have had different fathers. Also, cats don't normally have just one kitten. Wonder what happened to the fathers and the siblings? The rich lady can't have known about them or she'd have kept them all.

You have never seen a litter of kittens? They r always of verity of colors.
The cat mother was probably adopted when she was pregnant.
Cat genetics are weird, a lot of times you'll have multiple colors in the same litter. Just means Duchess isn't purebred. But also, I think cats can have multiple fathers for the same litter.

Cartoon? Cartoon? This is not a cartoon! Cartoons are what we used to watch as kids. On a Saturday morning. Usually 3-5 minutes or so. And were about characters Like Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam etc... "The Aristocats" however is an animated film. It's about an hour and a half long. And their both quite enjoyable to people of all ages. Got it yet? Do you see the difference? 🙂

A favorite animated feature, but marred by inconsistent animation. Even the character designs for Duchess and the kittens are crude and sketchlike in the early scenes (exemplified here by the scene with the lawyer). I have often wondered if the quality would have been better had Walt Disney not passed away before the film's release. ='[.]'=
