    The teardown and explanation is always satisfying to know... it's not just about solving a puzzle but how it works inside, that is also a puzzle! And... The disassembly and reassembly is also a puzzle... What you have there is a puzzle within a puzzle within a puzzle! How cool is that!?

    It was very exciting for me to see you solving this puzzle, especially because I was the one who recommended you this puzzle 🙂.
    I never expected that you would unscrew the mechanism part!
    And I can confess to you, after being able to open my Planet Box, I also was frustrated that the mechanism was hidden, so I also, with a lot of effort, managed to unscrew all 14 bolts, to see the mechanism. I made pictures of the mechanism and screwed the box back and was also able to get it back in the original state.
    I found this mechanism very clever and intriguing, because every time you put it back in the unsolved position, you have to start all over again solving it 😀

    I absolutely would have torn into this puzzle the same as you. I have always had an obsessive interest in the inner workings of things like this. As a child I remember getting in trouble for disassembling a friction-motor toy car, fascinated with knowing how it made itself go. I've had to teach myself at least the basics of many specialty skills in order to reassemble all the things I've deconstructed to satisfy my insatiable desire to comprehend the world around me.

  • @NerdyStarProductions
    @NerdyStarProductions Před 2 lety +3

    Imo the most satisfying part about a puzzle is not being able to open it; it's knowing that you figured out the precise approach on your own, or at least found a really clever alternate solution the creator didn't think of. Even with this puzzle, it was pretty unsatisfying when you thought it was a straightforward locking mechanism, but once you took a look inside and realized there were several traps that you lucked your way past, it made you appreciate the puzzle a tiny bit more (albeit in this case I don't think traps were particularly much more ingenious than what you initially assumed it looked like).
    I think ideally puzzles should just let you take a look at the locking mechanism regardless, but if they don't, at the very least they should include some explicit and precise solutions so that you at least have a way of verifying your approach.

    It's great to see a teardown and discover how the mechanism works. But to a point it's also understandable WHY it was glued together -- it prevents people from "easily" copying the design, manufacturing their own puzzle, and then selling it on the market. If YOU created this puzzle, might you NOT want people stealing your ideas? I don't know whether this particular puzzle had any kind of patent protection, but I can see why they may not want people to peek inside (thus the glue AND the lack of plastic see-through to the internal workings).

    • @Mr.Puzzle
      @Mr.Puzzle  Před 2 lety

      I personally think the mechanism was not hidden to hide it. It was just hidden because the manufacturer did not think about it in detail.

    THANK YOU, for showing the puzzle. I would say, the reason the tear-down was made extremely hard to do, was to protect the inventor's secret of how it was made, so that he/she wouldn't have copy-cats duping him/her out of money, that clearly, he/she deserved; after coming up with a very thought out and designed puzzle. By you taking it apart on CZcams, so that everyone in the world can see his hard work, it probably cost him a chunk of change in losses.

    100% agree that paying a lot of money for a puzzle entitles you to also see the mechanism once you've solved it, and I applaud your determination to do so by force. hard to say whether the glue was an effort to keep people out, or to hold it together tighter to allow for less precision in the manufacturing which would result in excessive freeplay, or if the contracted manufacturer simply assembled it the same way they would any other wood product, without concern or knowledge of the use and philosophy behind the box

    While I understand the desire to see the mechanism and I agree they shouldn't make it so hard, in this case it did spoil the puzzle a bit. Even though you had already solved it, you didn't have the full solution and further attempts to solve it would have made it clear that there was more to figure out. That later experience extends the life of the puzzle if you don't disassemble the first time.
