Jean Luc "I'll surrender my ship on my first mission" Picard was a self-righteous blowhard who never passed up an opportunity to pontificate to all those lowly beings around him who did not fit into his idealized image of humanity. His brother Robert was right: he needed humbling. Too bad not even the Borg could conquer his indomitable ego, only put him at odds with it. That served to turn him into some sort of glossed over Captain Ahab.
As Picard had yet to be injured by the Borg at Farpoint, he was not yet an Ahab type character by then. Just a pompous pontiff of Gene's overblown "vision."
nice that the scene cuts of Picard reacting to the Locutus doll are actually him remembering when he was Locutus while talking with Sisko from DS9. ... yeah, I've seen way too much of this stuff.
I bet Wes made that Locutus toy. After all, he was the one who "stole" the voices of the crew in "The Naked Now." Perhaps he stole the voices for the Borg toy, but someone helped him to actually design it. Maybe Chief O'Brien or Pulaski.
@TomeOfBattle Yeah I'd say Q, cuz Picard had not long promoted Wesley to full ensign before he was captured by the Borg. So Wesley would've been more mature by that point.
@OtterVomit First Contact did give Picard that aspect, but it was out of continuity with many episodes of the show, one of which is I Borg (which took place about a year after Picard was assimilated) where Picard proved he was the opposite of "an Ahab type character". P.S. Sorry I know this is two years old but I wanted to point this out to you.
I didn't like picard in the first two seasons (although he wasn't bad in episodes I liked like elementary dear data, the measure of a man and Q who) and he may have been a grumpy old man in those seasons but after that when tng got new writers I started to like picard more because he seemed to be more of a person and to me they redeemed him for any previous behaviour in the first two seasons. The mosting telling for this is when his brother says "So my brother is a human being after all."
@LlansleyNinja141 Maybe the reason why people voted his comment down is because he isn't being very fair. Like I said Picard might have started out as being arrogant in early TNG but when the show got better writers he was made to be more human as well as the show taking on a humility approach. Ottervomit seems to be ignoring that and just focusing on how Picard used to be early on and not what happened later on in the show.
Picard did not have a idealized image of humanity. I don't remember him ever telling anyone what the human race should be, only explaining how humanity in the future had changed that's all. Besides about picard's first mission what else was picard supposed to do? There was no way to outrun Q and he saved members of his crew from being captured by Q anyway and trying to fight Q would have been pointless.
starfleet isent military. it is a mix between the military, the pece cor, and NASA. Starfleet is rarly used as an army. presumibly during the dominion war all civilians were transferd off the ship.
Do you not see the contradiction in making fun of him for surrendering and calling him Ahab? Stubbornly trying to fight and making an obviously poor decision because "it's MY first mission" would be a lot more Ahab-like.
I always wondered how the children on the Enterprise felt about Picard after the Borg incident. Whether they would still bother with Captain Picard Day or if they were kind of terrified of him for a while.
lol i love this! the borg rambling while picard is talking the admiral is icing on the cake :D

How on Earth was Picard's surrender on the Farpoint mission a topic of coversation? You have a better response meeting Q for the first time?
Hahaha.....well done!
Cant stop rolling on floor laughing!
Picard didn't make this day up, in fact he seems to be against it.
Why would this be insipid? Picard is awesome.

@OtterVomit ...which makes him a very interesting character ;)
