Metallica - ...And Justice For All (Guitars Only)

- There's a lot of guitar layering action going on right here, who knows how many guitar tracks exaclty found their way into the final song.
Anyway, I managed to get all the little rhythm and lead parts in there so this is a complete version with only all the guitar parts.
\m/ - Hudba
Kirk looks like a skinny hulk here
Dan 2c plus a she hulk playing a LTD guitar
During Justice era he used to take cocaine, so maybe...
i thought that during the st anger era he took cocaine
Kirky using cocaine always sound funny to me. To me, the only thing he use is icecream. Love this guy...
Matteo Vitali The only one doing cocaine on that time was Lars
2:37 i fucking love this riff
28leftbehind It's so glorious :'D
28leftbehind Let's find out!
The palm muted F# chords are so chunky
This one is literally the most fun song to play on the guitar
im learning it rn
The tone just sounds so fucking huge, it rules
layered to death. this is about 9 guitar tracks lol. black album is only 3 tracks and it sound punchier and bigger than this
Infinity i thought only a few parts were layered
isaac white
its all layered man :)
Infinity shit, i though it was 2 guitars (james and kirk) and at the harmony parts it was like layered 4 times
isaac white
james did all the rhythm parts until load
This is the best overall metal song ever. Its 9 minutes and never gets boring. The lyrics are truer than ever
mikey1974 hetfield 9:46! Even better!!!
hmm i disagree. i think it repeats a bit too much. Master of puppets is my favourite song.
@@shamicentertainment1262 MOP was more dynamic but AJFA is epic just in the lyrics alone . “ power wolves beset your door hear them stalking” kirks solos where stellar
I found the last verse kinda redundant but it does make the ending more satisfying
And the best guitar tone of all times I mean justice for all has no bass to hear so this guitar tone sounds good but with bass would sound the best tone ever heard of all time
4:46 - Never Noticed that 9th chord snuck in there. Love these isolated tracks !
Thanks ! :D
Yeah, it's amazing.
Happens before that at 3:21 too. Slayer uses this technique on Repentless. Im sure other things too. Sounds darker for sure.
cimmerian100 In the full mix it gets covered up by the bass part.... :-)
cimmerian100 sounds fuckin evil
9:00 to 9:51 awsome. On the live versión i love when lady justice start to break down.
Dude... I'd cut my left nut off just to witness that live. The melody is amazing
The best part .!!!
Why is nobody talking about the insane chugging going on at 6:28?
6:28 is badass for headbanging. That tone and that riff is godly.
My favorite part of the song right there. Bass is almost audible there too
RichieRichOverdrive same
My favorite part!
It’s so smart as well. A heavy breakdown of that beautiful clean intro. What a song
@@ali965 facts
There aren't enough words in all the languages for me to explain how I FUCKIING LOVE the (too) short sequence that starts at 1:46 and ends at 1:56, how I wish it was repeated more times during the song. Luckily at the end they do it more.
+Dagoberto Ignacio Garcés Lavado
Yeah I wish Metallica did more dual guitar harmonies in some of their songs
+Dagoberto Ignacio Garcés Lavado ikr it gives a feeling of total chaos
there are more at the end of the song but i wish they repeated it more :(
Dagoberto Ignacio Garcés Lavado
The first time I heard that riff I thought to myself 'this sounds like sex'. It opened me up to a new song writing technique tho. Create a really sex like riff that people will just wanna hear more and more, tease it at the start, fucking give it to em at the end
9:00 - 9:11 and 9:19 - end of song. My favorite part as well
9:19 That sounds soo beautiful, gorgeous, amazing, majestic, perfect, I just can't explain it because I don't speak english well but that moment gives me chills
Personally speaking after listening all the guitar tracks from this album I don't think that there will EVER BE another album where the guitar tone will be as heavy as in this one.
My Metal Zone pedal says otherwise.
David Whiting
hahahah, oh you're being serious. Let me laugh harder HAHAHAHAHAHA
Juan José Fonseca Godoy Yeah, I'm totally being serious. Fuckhead.
David Whiting
Then you don't know what a good distortion is.
Juan José Fonseca Godoy It was a joke. A good distortion is whatever sounds good to the player. Some people don't even like distortion at all. Some people could even get a good sound out of the Boss Metal Zone if they tried hard enough, but thats beside the point. The point here is you clearly can't tell satire when you see it.
If you put drums on this track, you have all the instruments of that album
Nando Dorigon the tone's so heavy it doesn't need a bass lol
There is plenty of bass on AJFA. Jason played note for note what James is playing. So the bass was more thumpy.
I actually love the way it sounds with no bass. I like it a lot better than and justice for jason.
Xylene Cobalt You should hear the frost media props remaster of Justice, the bass isnt annoyingly loud, its a perfect balance.
Juan Hernández it does have bass, just turned down very low
this guitar tone is so heavy an aggressive and those pics of then they look so angry and it fits them real well
1:12 man that long held chord sounds so huge
I see you everywhere lol
Artan McManus lol
That’s EMG active pickups for ya... (81&86)
Awesome hammer-on, pull-off 9:45
6:27 is my favourite part of the song. BEST TONE EVER
Mine as well. This song is a riffing masterpiece but that intro riff with distorted guitars all palm muted is nothing short of amazing
It's the best intro riff reprise ever written. And the tone rips your ears off
The LITTLE nuances of this song are brilliant - like at 2:20 there's just ONE added note that James adds to the riff at the start of each verse and it's fucking awesome.
i really want this tone it's so heavy
GalaxyBoy41 get bias desktop, scan this video and you have it
Fritz Käsebrot thanks bro
The tone is actually a lot thicker sounding that it actually was. A lot of that thickness comes from multi-tracking and layering. James used little gain, just enough to get it solid and crunchy, but never really distorted and saturated. A lot of the solid feel about the tone is his heavy handed picking and palm muting.
@@mattm9074 And also much because he is holding the pick with three fingers. You get a much more firm attack that way.
@@mattm9074 how would one go about palm muting like james
7:31 That is the most magnificent human made sound of all history
James Hetfield greatest rhythm player of all time?
Yes, by far
Yes
Most definitely
With no doubt
My list is James Hetfield, Malcolm Young, Dave Mustaine in no particular order the tightest rythym guitarist ever🤘🤘
Meanwhile...
*Breaks out in air-drumming*
Listening right now at volume 11. My arms are like the Hammer of Justice.
I don't know how one man can be so talented (Hetfield) WHO invents this overlayed masterpiece after 9:14
Yes thats the best part of the song
His father created his own business and his mother was an opera singer there’s your answer
tony balony His mother was also a dumbass
aapeli123 sounds fucked up but kinda true LOL
HangYoSelf Yeah bro i didn’t remember typing this and this is hilarious
Hetfields playing is tighter than a nuns poontang
MORE BEER!
Those chugs right after 2:59 sound HUGE...
+Shawn Spenstar I have no idea...I wasn't the one who made the video.
5:10 , killer solo
James really plays drums on guitars
I've said it before on the full studio version and I'll say it again here, the intro is James basically congratulating himself for creating this beautiful piece of art, even before its begun!
7:09
oh mah gawd. So heavy.
Yeah my Fav Metallica lp too. The Guitar work on this lp & song are just incredible.
I bought this on TAPE back in 1988.
I found my dads Justice album still in it's plastic he bought back in 88. I think its so cool!
Some of Metallica's finest work! If only they made albums like this nowadays!
+Justin jonston Then they would be fake because it's not the music they don't want to make anymore.
FROM 6:47 TO 7:40 AHHHHHHHHHHRGGGHHH YEAHHHHH!!!!!
THE BEST METAL TONE EVER HEARD FOR ME AND AN AMAZING RIFF!!!!
bad ass guitar tone
I cant pick a favorite album from Metallica, but it is between the first 4 albums.
Peter Mikkelsen All of their albums are my favourite except Load and Reload.
+28leftbehind ReLoad and Load are way better than St Anger though.
+Peter Mikkelsen in my opinion, ...AJFD and Black Album are their best album :p
99.99999% of metallica fans will agree with you
I've watched this so many times, I've come to realise that in certain parts where there's a silent break in the guitars, you just can about hear the drum tracks playing in James's headphones as he's tracking rhythm
I haven't seen any in-studio pictures from this album, but he was most likely in the control room listening to the studio monitors while the amp was isolated in another room. There's more possibility of bleed from other tracks during vocals. Anything's possible though.
Yeah that makes more sense, part of me thinks it could of been the monitors being picked up through his pickups
@@CJ_YT. that’s exactly what it is
9:20 Sounds so great with just the guitars.
Im so fucking tired and wanna go to sleep so I was just gonna bookmark this vid but once it started playing there was no turning back....stupid of me to think otherwise.
It truly is one of their most beautiful songs... Not only a "musically" epic in general but especially instrumentally.
damn, this guitar tone fill the mix standalone !
Literally the moment James always talk about when he said they over did AJFA
6:58
i'll never get enough of this tone
This is what this guitar tone was made for; playing it without other instruments.
2:36 one of the best riffs of all time !
This is better to listen with headphones on :)
yeah you're right bro
Loved this album since it's birth and does not fail to impress... that tone of James is fucking immense
That outro... I need some alone time now.
That's because they used a Mesa Boogie strategy 400.One of the most powerful guitar amps of all time.
we still dont completely know how they got this tone.
Actually we do and in complete detail too. I'm talking about the exact amp settings, EQ settings, the cabinets and microphones Metallica used etc. They did use the strategy 400 on this album, they also used the Mark III, the Quad and the IIC+ (they recorded with whatever amp they felt sounded good on the day) many people believe the entire thing was recorded through a IIC+ or a Marshall slaved into a IIC+ but they're entirely wrong. Flemming Rasmussen published his notes from the recording sessions. So if you want to know how to get this tone you'll find it.
They did but they didn't use it on every song. They used a Mark III on some songs, a IIC+ on other songs and a Quad too. If you guys want to know exactly how AJFA was recorded, what cabinets were used, what amps, what EQ settings (etc) scroll through this thread www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/58664-condenser-mic-identification-metallica.html the producer himself reveals it all.
I know what you mean about different amps for different songs, like freyed ends of sanity definitely has a more heavy sound than eye of the beholder
oh cool! thanks!
7:19 is as heavy as you can possibly get with guitars in standard tuning. Simply incredible what they acheived.
i realize even more now how much i love this band. i literally jammed out to JUST the guitars, not even including the amazing vocals, bass(kinda), and drums. its insane how even with just these 2 instruments, they compile music in such a way thats just awe inspiring. such an amazing band
Am I the only one who's favorite part of the song is the harmonized guitars that start at 6:28 and end at 7:20?
No, you not the only one 🖤
@@estagisep_ glad to hear that
Nah, this is my favourite part as well. It's as beautiful as any classical piece I've ever heard. Probably could be made into one with relative ease.
the justice tone and black album tone are similar but the black album has more distortion and uses more of the low end of the tone
Nigel 1990 they used way more mids on black than Ajfa
MajesticSloth but you cant deny they sound similar, its kinda like a combination of ajfa and load
The guitar tone is extremely similar, they described it themselves as being the same as the black album tone but with more bass, no mods and more highs, the gain is about the same. Black album had some pretty aggressive high mids and a little less highs though. Not more bass, but the bass was indeed focused out on the album.
.....and has a bit more bass
Kyornadkk Dude you’re the only one that knows what you’re saying in this little comment section lol
Maybe one of the best outros of all times in music
6:27 perfection
This tone actually makes me moan
Woah
@@colinenger I have no recollection of ever writing this comment.
@@zorn1745 lol
Same tho bro it’s almost a turn on its so fucking good
This is multiple rhythm guitar tracks layered on eachother but hetfield sounds cleaner and tighter than any rhythm guitarist in history and most don’t layer tracks like this. He played it perfectly over and over
INTRO IS LEGENDARY!
i would love a complete discography of guitar only Drums only, bass only also leads seperate from rytm as i love taking bits and make them into sounds for texts on mobil vocals seperate as well
5:08
Love that part 6:58 - 7:19
I started learning this song over a year ago and i'm still finding new little chords and harmonies thanks to this video!
One year later... Still finding things
still finding things
I’m still finding things. You still too?
@@zynnertime1 yep lmao
Best guitar tone ever
Got bless Dave, but this is so much better than Megadeth.
dave is a great riff master but it's too complicated for some listeners. Metallica songs stripped down aren't to complicated except for the downpicking
mikey1974 hetfield I don’t know about too complicated. It’s just not as good. I think Dave dresses things up too much because stripped down they wouldn’t sound good. I wouldn’t add or subtract to any Metallica riff. Some of Dave’s riffs could change drastically and no one would know the difference.
What I hate now is most bands are playing thru those fratcual modeling amps, mostly due to size and traveling wear. It just sounds too digital, They need to play thru those mark IV mesa boogie amps with marshall cabs.
I love metallica but id pick any song on rust in peace over this metallica gets so boring to play on guitar after while too
mikey1974 hetfield i agree megadeth is for smart people!
All James, I believe, except the guitar solo in the middle
Yep, I don't think Kirk tracked any rhythms until Load.
@@thirteenthandy right, he snuck in the rhythm tracks on Load and James approved.
It sounds like theirs 6 guitars? I am assuming EQ and some delay/reverb.
@@xxEzraBxxx James actually tracked around that many lol. They also had a very firm "no reverb" policy
xxEzraBxxx I believe there is around 6 but this tone had little to no delay and or reverb. It was mostly gain, chorus, very scooped mids, and presence
Man, Metallica has always had the best guitar tones. It is so difficult to tell which tone I prefer, they nailed every single one they tried...
best guitar tone ever
Everyone tag Ryan Bruce and tell him he's wrong about this tone being bad.
jonny j IMO Colin Richardson and Fredrik Nordström made the way for how to balance out an aggressive guitar tone. Clayman and Shogun are examples
i sang along in all the choruses parts!!! thnx!!!
Definitly my favourite guitar tone ever
Pure greatness
Great James
THE LAST MINUTE THE BEST OF THE BEST
Perfect to my drums
IMHO, This guitar track and The Shortest Straw guitar track blew my fucking mind for tone!!! The tone James got out of those Mesa rectifiers in 88' are put down in history as well as this album for the pinnacle of metal guitar playing!!!
Literally ALL the guitars
9:00-9:51 is so freakin good
There's so much gain, but it's such a tight sound how?!?!?!
it really is not that much gain. scooping the mids this much and having 8 guitar tracks makes it sound like it has more gain
It’s because of the way James plays rhythm on the album. A lot of picking hand palm muting while downpicking, making it sound so tight paired with this very layered tone
pickups play a big part too I think. Some of my guitars sound much tighter than others with same amp settings for sure
Hey guys....I wish you were with me for this album tour. Amazing, and Queensryche was the opening band doing their Operation Mindcrime album!
And when that lead kicks in. Goddamn
I don't like all the dark elements surrounding metal. But as a teenager i heard One, around '93 it must be, out of nothing and with no experience of Metal what so ever. It got a grip on me right away, the sheer deep intensity of this sound. I don't do metal anymore, but AJFA became my reference point for metal in general, and metalsound in general. Apart from the complexity and agression on this album, the razorsharp sound is so brutal. That tight synchronized guitar and drum sound. It grips you by the nuts. Imagine how this sound works for teenager back then, toughness welded in Music. I really could relate to this album. I've litteraly, cliché but true, played this tape in my room for hours. I've noticed the last 7 months i'm in it again..Watching the State Of Mercury shzlle helps for sure. He does recreate the AJFA sound *100 %* legit
i fucking love this guitar tone
Dat Mid Scoop. The mids were scooped on the Amp and additionally with added EQ.
Ihis sounds great! tnx man! :)
impecable! buen material! de donde lo conseguis? muy bueno
i love this intro
not hearing the drums on this is so weird jesus
Who knew Gamora could play guitar
you just made my day lol XD
If James Hetfields picking was any tighter, you couldn’t shift it with a bulldozer. Absolutely the catchiest tune, and the greatest tone ever. Period
Producer: How much should we reduce the mids on your guitar?
Jamez: Yes
Dimebag has entered the chat
Funny thing is this song has the most Mids along with to live is to die. The rest of the songs eq curve almost hit the bottom
@@PapaRikkiBalls yes especially shortest straw lmao
5:34 beautiful
Fucking BRUTAL tone. Cannot be surpassed in RAGE
Fucking killer!. First 4 Metallica albums are and always will be my favorite.
Anyone know how many guitars are layered for the end of the intro? 0:50 Especially that final note before the little breakdown. 0:59 Sounds like 10 guitars in harmony I swear.
Pretty sure there's one for the higher part of the harmony, and one for the low part, and the rhythm(the two chords over top) probably has more than one track
There's like 4-5
I've actually gotten close to this tone with a pedal going into the fx loop of my amp im not even using active pickups but im about 90% there
dank shank using what pedal?
Enrique M. It's a amptweaker tightmetal pro if you want I can share the settings
dank shank PLEASE I HAVE A BLUE VOODOO 120
XenoPrym you want the settings?
dank shank YEAHH
This interview with Flemming Rasmussen was for Master Of Puppets album.
Kickass riff at 2:46
6:27 - palm muting - level hetfield
I can’t get over the dive bomb at 5:58
Never noticed that weird cord at the end of the chorus. Cool stuff!!!
Pretty sure it’s a stacked 5th F power chord. Basically you play a c power cord and stretch your fingers to hit the F on the low string. In case you didn’t know.
@@FlyingV555 some kind of sus chord. Like

On the albums from 'Load' onwards, yes, both played rhythm guitars
Great Kirk
Difficult guitar tone to get down. I find if I add a light chorus it gets closer to the double track guitar tone
Hayden Boisvert I do the same thing
this is pure medicine! no shit!
