Footage in the eye wall of Hurricane Michael while driving along Highway 98 in the extreme winds and flying debris as I drive past the hotel that the crew was staying in.
Shot Description
Clip 1 Raw driving shot on highway 98
Time Code 00:00 9:02 for clip 1
At Time Code 00:00 starts with going over the bridge driving southeast on 98 with tons of debris flying at me.
At Time Code 03:22 I come up towards the hotel the crew was staying in. Insane amount of debris flying at me.
I keep going down the road for about a block or two until I turn around due to the dangers of the situation.
Time Code of turn around is 4:30 All while trying to do an interview with Inside Edition. Turns out I have an Android phone which did not work for Facetime.
Time Code 4:46 massive large sheet metal debris in the road like some scifi monster as I'm going with the wind towards the northwest and driving towards the eye that was only about five miles away.
Time Code 4:54 coming back towards the hotel as debris is flying all around me.
Time Code 5:10 Surge Starts, time to go and try and making it further inland and take shelter in the eye of the hurricane from the surge.
Continue to drive in whiteout conditions to the northwest
Time Code 6:12 More storm surge rapidly coming in and I'm basicly driving blind in the storm surge on Highway 98 to get to higher ground before it gets worse or die.
Pretty much you could say I was surfing the surge.
Time Code 7:08 back at the bridge and I stop to look around and see the surge is coming in rapidly out the side window and leave to keep heading northwest and to the eye.
Time Code 8:33 Turning around to leave to go to the eye and continue to the northwest.
Clip 2 - 4 Time Code 9:02 Footage from inside the eye.

It looks like you risked yourself more than any other chaser down there, but it was worth it in the end since the footage is great. You narrowly avoided being trapped by the storm surge, it was really a very close call! Michael's eye will be rembered for a long time, it's really rare to have such a well-defined landfallling eye during the day.
Another chaser lost their car, but was able to recover their camera and you can see the car getting thrashed around by the storm surge. It's pretty eerie.
Yeah, it was crazy but I did see the other footage where they parked in someones front yard. I looked for the location on Google Maps and they failed to drive up the hill to safety. That was a bad call on their part. They could have just drove to safety, I did.
I was in a hotel in Callaway for the storm. Hard to believe a man can loose everything minus the clothes on his back in just 3 hours. I feel blessed I still have my wife and dogs!
Possibly best video in a hurricane eye wall that i've seen yet. Kinda risky heading straight into oncoming debris but glad nothing happened. Thanks for risking your life to bring us some amazing footage. Top man
StormChasingVideo I can’t possibly imagine them not upgrading this hurricane to a 5. Spent a lot of time in Panama City since the hurricane hit helping with recovery efforts, and it looks like a 60 mile wide tornado damage path. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. Still think you’re absolutely insane for doing this, but I’m glad you’re ok and hope this helps with future broadcasting and with storm damage estimates.
I really hope people understand how bad it still is there. Recovery efforts are at a crawl.

I agree with your comment; however, you must watch icyclone's Hurricane Dorian video. It is insane.
Dude you are crazy I survived this storm in a house in Callaway, no way I would have been out driving around. Props to you for what you do
I used to live in this town. All I could think about while watching this was that there were people hiding in some of those house. Lone elderly who couldn't leave, others that chose to stay. The absolute terror they must have felt.
That is why they should have left.
That was so friggin great. I have never saw any footage like this from inside the eye. I do, however, appreciate the danger you placed yourself in to get this video, and I understand why you did it.
The bar has now been raised, significantly.
Hey bud. I watched the whole rebroadcast of your live video. I'm glad you clipped this because my heart was racing just watching it. Glad you made it safely.
thanks, I was not even planning to just post this part but someone asked me to just show the worst.
Hurricane Michael survivor. Bayou George/Panama City. Not a tree left standing but by His grace my home is intact. My roof is intact. My family is intact. We shall perservere.

Did better than me. My house in Tallahassee has 100k in damages. Completely
unlivable.
@@Gallagherfreak100 im truly so very sorry. I live in a large doublewide. Lost a little vinyl siding, all the skirting. Not 1 leak, no roof damage. My lg shed however, is upside down. All the yard stuff is buried under a freezer, a Cabrio lg dryer, & cabinetry. The locked door was completely blown off, 20 ft away. 17 outside cats survived as well!!! We were indeed blessed.🙃❤
@@StormChasingVideo 3 lineman lost their lives in Chipley because of a drunk driver a few days ago. Our hearts are broken for their family & friends. We will never forget what they sacrificed for us.💔
@@barbaran0 : Lucky for you. A friend of mine lives on North Bay Dr., in Lynn Haven, he has some damage, but, livable. Neighbors on both sides lost their homes. I
had 3 pine and 2 oak trees on my house. One 80 foot pine crushed the center of my house, caving in the roof and shattering 6 trusses. Neighbor on one side has
worse damage from only one 80 foot pine. My neighborhood is a mess. A
tornado spun up when one of the rain bands came though. All the damage
happened in about 30 seconds. It's pretty depressing.
@@Gallagherfreak100 yes we had 2 tornadoes one on each side of the trailer. It still blows my mind. Again, i am so very sorry for you & i hope the insurance company is fair if u are insured.❤
Man you had guts to be in Mexico Beach Florida during this hurricane! Nice video!! Most insane hurricane footage I have ever seen! I was terrified just watching this!! You literally turned around just in time because that storm surge almost had you! God was watching over you!

Awesome footage that's rarely captured. We reside approximately 20 minutes away and were in the eye as well. I took some video in the eye too, but didn't this clear view of the 'stadium effect'. GREAT job!
That is the most amazing video I have seen of Hurricane Michael with the eye wall. Just wow! Prayers even until this day for those who suffered trauma, loss and family or friends during this storm.
THESE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY.
@@StormChasingVideo category 5 crazy. But damn.. loved seeing the video.
Awesome footage! Just so sad for everyone who lost their homes. I live on the east coast of Florida and have been through many hurricanes but nothing like this.
Been following you since Katrina, Doug. Thanks for the balls of steel for us to get a glimpse.
That's some intense stuff. Seeing the wind & rain in these is just fascinating to watch.
Oh and in the eye .. that looks simply beautiful. Really just amazing that such large destructive storms have .nothing. & are totally peaceful right in the middle.
Great vid.

I personally would love to go experience a cat 4/5 hurricane - the eyewall in particular, and inside the eye.
(just not in a car!)
Incredible footage...but I have to ask...what were you driving around in to handle that wind?
It was a Honda Rav4. My apologies for the delayed response.
@@tonydegregorio4895 a honda rav4? toyota rav4? lol

@@Britt4ny Yeah yeah Toyota. That thing drives like an empty Mack truck.
at some point must have been useless to have the wipers going, the wind would keep the windshield clear. amazing Water Tornado!!
and then the eye wall moved.

LOL this is one of the top 5 best comments ive ever read on youtube hahahaha, well done!! Lol.
I'm wearing some big headphones and I can hear all the low frequency muffling sounds from the wind. Amazing!
Normally I watch storm videos with the sound off. After reading this comment I turned on my stereo (and subwoofer), then re-watched part of the vid just to hear it ... I probably overdid it on the volume a bit considering I could sorta feel some of that in the floor. ...lol.
I have never seen a video of an eye wall before, it was amazing.
Same!
When does the video game of this drive come out?
What type of vehicle did you use, and were there any special equipment added?
Great video! One of the best hurricane video I have ever seen! I felt like I was riding in the car with you because just watching it made me scared! Was this shot just before the eyewall or during???? Great job and thanks for the awesome video!
StormChasingVideo thank you for answering and the great video!
Oh man. My family and I had just left Mexico Beach a week before this monster hit. Spent some time on St. George Island, too. It was so peaceful and beautiful, but I had a ""feeling" in my bones that something wasn't right. The waves felt "off"....I dunno, I cant explain it. When it comes to weather, I usually can tell whats coming juding by nature and my old reliable arthritic knee.
Thanks for Sharing!😊

@@StormChasingVideo why is it the media did hardly any coverage of this storm? That most people who didn’t live it either didn’t know about it at all, didn’t think it was catastrophic, or completely forgot?? We still have blue tarps on roofs everywhere! Crumbled buildings all around. Mexico Beach only has a handful of businesses even open over 2 years later. I’m not wanting sympathy but I don’t want what we endured to be forgotten either

Wow wow wow I was about the best footage I've ever seen. can you tell us about the equipment that you use camera, Communications, computers 4 weather information and your vehicle info. Must have been dented all heck I'm surprised I didn't see any broken windows I'm your vehicle
Not sure who was looking out for you up above, but I’d say it was easily about 40 angels. The fact that your vehicle wasn’t struck by almost any major debris is astounding.

Again, great, great, job with the footage and putting yourself out there in harms way in providing bro. By the by, INCREDIBLE EYE WALL SHOT! Probably one of the best on record.
This guy is insane but wow the eye wall part is amazing.
what an amazing view of the whole eyewall, eerie how still it gets. great footage.
I love how real it was. A lot of people think that once you get in the eye wall it's just "still" in the air. Obviously it's not. It's calm compared to what you just went through, but not completely calm.
When you need to make one more liquor run for your hurricane party.
Wtf Cindy y
Nlpl0l
Thank you for this! I have never seen what it is like inside the eye of a hurricane!
The eye of a hurricane is quite calm. I have been in three. Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma. If he was on the edge of the eye wall of a Cat 4, the vehicle should have been airborne and the power poles should have been splintered all over the place. I have driven in a tropical storm with less visibility (but less wind) than is shown here. I would think when this footage was taken the storm was a low Cat 2 strength. I do not believe you can drive during Cat 4 or Cat 5 hurricane winds unless this is a specially designed very heavy low center of gravity vehicle.
@@swinde Sorry to answer so late but of course this was cat 4/borderline cat 5 strength, it's just that the categories are defined by wind speeds over the *open ocean* . Sustained winds on land are approximately 30-40% lower just because of land induced friction. I reckon sustained winds in Mexico Beach probably reached 110mph from the footage I have seen with gusts at Tyndall AFB (according to damage surveys) above 170mph. Rarely do you ever see a storm being so strong on land. I mean, I recently reanalyzed Omar (officially Cat 4 at "landfall" in St.Croix) and sustained winds only reached 53mph there. Sustained winds over the ocean more accurately represent the strongest gusts on land
No, Where I lived in the Cat 2 storm, sustained wind over land reached over 100 mph, and in the two Cat three storms, winds reached 120 mph. Official readings are taken at 30 feet and wind is averaged over a one minute period to compute the "sustained wind".
At ground level there are huge differences because of ground obstructions. Winds will be faster between taller buildings, so getting a wind reading on the ground will be local.
They were likely driving within the storm a mile or so from the actual eye wall. In the eye itself the winds, if any, are light and variable. I know this from experience.
@@swinde I have seen not one storm where the open water sustained reading accurately matches the land measurements,at least not with very intense storms. Either gauges are simply blown away or they don't record winds nearly as high. Exceptions exist of course but what I'm saying is based on my experience as a hurricane fanatic
I agree, And I was just explaining why they cannot measure winds at the surface on land with any accuracy.
Depending on what obstacles are encountered the wind "speed" will vary greatly.
I wish you had the eye to the end video! This is a most amazing and daring video!
Strange hurricane, sometimes the wind is blowing from your left, sometimes it's blowing from your right, sometimes it's blowing right at you, sometimes it's blowing from behind you. Normally, in a regular world, wind is blowing from One Direction for a while and then moves to the other direction after the eyewall passes by.
The only way i ever want to see "the stadium effect."
This is some of the most compelling weather video I've ever seen.
That one stepped on my last nerve, yikes! Thanks for going the extra miles! Most Incredible ride!
Just curious, what was your chase vehicle? I had a CR-V.
Does anyone have a video of the moment it goes from eyewall to eye? From fury to calm. Every video I see always cuts away before the calm.
What kid of vehicle do you drive that can handle the storms you put it through?
It's so amazing that a cell phone works in this kind of weather?...
At 2:17 your passing my old road, S 32nd street, only one house stood standing on my road, the only one that was on stilts but was hollowed out
Amazingly awesome. The one thing I don’t get with the ‘eye’ videos I’ve seen is why everyone cut right before the other wall hit. I think seeing that instant transition from calm to hell would be dramatic and fascinating.
Because by that time they've got footage and need to get to safety. The winds change and can often be worse the second time around
What kind of car were you driving? An army tank?
I live in Florida and have experienced Michael and Irma sweating it out in my house. Most people here know better than to drive in a hurricane. However I have been exposed to several Tornado comming up faster than I could get away. This video is useful to remind us not to take chances. This storm Chaser needed some luck not to get hurt. I hope he / she knows that?
Where is the rest of the video?!!?!?! Was excited to see the re entry into the hurricane and the video ended
@@StormChasingVideo Can you specify which one? I looked through your videos and have only found jumpcuts.
Incredible footage, I cant imagine doing that! Thank you for sharing!
Damn! This guy is a badass!
Or incredibly stupid
Hurricane maria survivor. I was without power 85 days.
What were your backup options in case something went wrong?
Thank's for risking your lives making this awsome video. Being into the eye of a hurricane is once in a lifetime. Looks great. But please don't do this again.
What's that beep that is occurring now and then?
What car did you drive?
I'm pretty sure a lot of the warning signals were the truck's external proximity sensors from the debris flying around.
That was the key less entry for the rental
Incredible footage but omg my anxiety got bad watching this!!! Fantastic job.
Holy crap living in Utah i truly had no idea what these were like. How you dared to drive in that i dont know. How you could even see i dont know. Id be afraid something would come right through that windshield. So sad to see all that damage. Great video. Glad your ok.
Awesome video! Thank you
Thanks for footage. Mexico, Panama...someones sending country a message. Michael rowed ashore. Hallelujah 🌊
Rode out the hurricane Michael but lost everything staying with my family in another state. My first hurricane and this video is good was holding my breath through most of it
You took a risk and got incredible video. Good job.
This is one of the most straight up ballsiest thing I've ever watched
Great footage, not sure if I have the cajones to do that, as a matter of fact, I don’t. Thanks for sharing.

That was fantastic work Sir👍🏾.
Were you driving an armored vehicle?
MikeMaxis w
How in the Hell did you not get caught in storm surge? You were at ground zero!
He was driving the death mobile from animal house
It looks like after the vehicle turns around, it starts to encounter the storm surge washing over the highway, which would be something to be even more scared of than the wind.
Rare eyewall. How do u track the eyewall and drive straight to it
Nice. I didn't know that. I've always wanted to chase a hurricane but my ol lady won't let me. Lol. Women huh. I have the funds and heavy trucks, but she doesn't want to live alone she says. 😂. But watching u guys makes my depression and day go by so smooth 💯💯
thanks for this "actual" footage, best i've found
What was the posted speed of the storm at eye and diameter?

WHAT were you guys driving!? An armored tank?!
I’ll never forget this day ! MB used to be the last undeveloped part of the gorgeous Gulf Cpast. Called the Forgotten Coast . Now once rebuilt it’ll be just like PCB filled with condos and unaffordable vacation rentals. St. Joe Company is destroying our little piece of paradise
The most intense video I have seen. Honestly dude, did you ever at one point think you werent going to get out of it alive? Just think if you would have stalled out going thru the storm surge. I dont think it would have ended well for you. Anyway, an awesome video. Scared the crap out of me just watching it lol. Glad you made it out safely.
Dude really with all that debris pounding your truck, that’s kinda crazy. Be careful out there
Very nice footage. Never stop chasing!
GREAT video. Very intense. Thank you for risking your life to show us the eye of the storm.
WoW!
Why would you do this in a car knowing the chances of you having something fall on you or get impaled by debris. I appreciate this footage, you did take on way too much risk
What happens if your windshield wipers come off??!!
That was incredible! Glad you were safe.
I can't believe none of the houses on the west end of town hit you since they were all wiped off the map. So sad to see this hit my town. No wonder my house. Looked like it did!
When you forgot to stock up on smokes before the storm. Screw it I need em lol
What kind of car was that?
Wow wow!!! Thank you for sharing this !!!
Totally looks like the back end of a tornado at times with debris and the wind pattern!
That was intense! I would have been crying and so excited at the same time.
That eye wall was beautiful
Highest actual recorded wind speed in this Hurricane?
Strong vehicle. Could it be a Yukon. Amazing video. Glad you survived.

E le auto, viaggiano tranquillamente, senza alcun problema? Quando già con un forte temporale, bisogna fermarsi perché non si vede la strada? Sicuramente è un fotomontaggio

Wow, amazing eye wall, I wanted to know how much the video sold for,
@@StormChasingVideo Whatever it was, it was worth it. I grew up just outside of New Orleans. I know firsthand how rare it is to see (even more rare to capture) an eye that's still fully developed while over land. Kudos to you for this incredible footage. That said, I'm now content to spend my retirement years in the dry desert...and well above sea level. :)
It really shows you how massive hurricanes are
Nice footage 😊👌
It is difficult to see through the video's text. Some people in Singapore would be unhappy about the SCV imprinted in the center of the video, as would some people in France and the Stato della Città del Vaticano.
When people stop ripping off and trying to sell our footage as our own, we will stop watermarking it. Yes that really does happen.
The STADIUM EFFECT, how awesome is that? Totally Cool 😎 . 👍. Stuck inside during lockdown for covid 19, yup that’s enough excitement for one day on this May 12 2020
This is the most incredible footage I've ever seen.
Is it hard to walk around with your giant, steel balls???
Did you just ride it out in your truck the whole time. Incredible footage btw.
Yes I did, and it was a rental!
I am curious about what you saw when you go around something where the police cars were partially blocking road? You were speaking to someone who called you and your voice sounded to me like you didn't want to say what you saw. You are brave. I went through Michael in a mobile home 30 miles (?) from Mexico Beach in Panama City and I was terrified. Hurricane Ian just came through way south of here recently and the wind waz incredibly strong for 2 days. Hurricanes are no joke. For so many years when I waz younger it seemed that the forecasters and officials were exaggerating Hurricanes. They were not as strong and as frequent, or thats what I just stupidly believed.
