Tagore preached humanism more than anything and this was originally written in 1911 so it is for any particular religion in mind. It is for the unity of one country, one republic.

Am from Nepal and honestly beside Nepali anthem, Indian anthem makes me feel good.. Don't know why maybe its because I can understand the words in it.. I listen to this anthem and I do respect India.. This is the picture of India that Tagore had in mind when he composed this lines which is not just our national anthem but THE song for the spirit of humanity. Today when I see my countrymen fighting on the basis of differences of political opinion and one religion being given the spotlight while the other religions are sidelined to the periphery, when I see ethnic violence ravaging my nation and the leaders of the country pouring their entirety to the building of a temple when people of the country are dying everyday due to poverty and unemployment, when I see such tragic state of affairs I know this is certainly not the India that Tagore dreamt of.
You see you do not need anyone to tell you are a patriot or an anti national based on your political opinion. If you listen to this song and it makes tears well up your eyes and you feel chills rushing down your spines, close your eyes and just pray for our beautiful nation to heal.
