as an east kalimantan resident, i would say that most of the criticisms come from foreign medias and less from indonesians. majority of indonesian laypeople and experts support the idea to build the new capital, including local people. And the thing you said as 'forest' is not actually forest. It's a industrial plantation labelled as forest (hutan industri/industrial 'forest') and the plants there are mostly homogenic such as rubber and palm. biodiversity has long gone decades ago, so it's totally misleading if you think this new capital will remove the orangutan habitat. I personally believe that this project will recover the forest instead due to media and public attention, and it's deeply embedded into the design of the capital itself. Oh the 'gost city'? seeing the indonesian birth rate, chance for that to happen is slim to none :D

As I am a government officer, next year perhabs I have to move to the new capital. Its difficult to leave my house and other things, but we must do it! The issue is actually not about the sinking but the megathrust, and economy distribution therefore though the capital is going to be relocated but there are masive infrastructure development in Jakarta. In the future Jakarta will be a business city like new york and the capital will be in NUSANTARA. Incase the Megathrust hit Jakarta in the future, the goverment which is located in safe island, Borneo, can handle the disaster. Government is only planning to relocate the centre of government administration to new capital. It means only those who are central government employees will need to move to new location. Not all population. 2. This new capital is being built over the industrial forest, human made forest not natural. So the forest is not the natural habitat for wild animals such as orangutan. The forest is and was an industrial forest. 3. There are no indigenious people living in the area so the need to relocate them is very little to none. Well, I feel that the blueprint of the new capital is too utopic and seeing the animated video that is being circulated in the social media, I am more convinced that its too Utopic. Well, i feel that it would be like that of Egypt, Myanmar and Brazil where there are only government buildings and quarters of government employees but not proper residents. Further the structure which looks like wings is too extra. They are wasting the tax payers money on such excess structure. One of the most important thing that they need to remember is that they are not like middle eastern countries which has oil money. So its better to design their government buildings which are efficient and not just showoff and utilise the money on solving the problem in Jakarta itself because those residents of Jakarta are not going to migrate to their new capital. I understand the environmental stakes, but if this doesn't happen, more of Jakarta's people will be under water, I mean look at all the garbage flowing into the rivers and oceans after flooding! Once the ne capital is done, there won't be more logging and the government will be able to see the illegal activities and stop it. The city itself shouldn't be so sprawled out, rather focusing on density. It also looks more luxurious, so incapable of offering housing to the poor. All these new capitols have that issue in common, they want high wealth people and high-tech industry, but forget that their people don't have the skills or the money, so bring in rich from other countries, circumventing the reason for the city's development (to give housing to those at risk of losing their homes in flooding) entirely!
Jakarta is unsustainable, but dumping a huge population into East Kalimantan will cause untold damage to that fragile environment putting species like orangutans at serious risk. It’s the amount of land needed to support such a city that will be the issue. Land will be cleared for padi fields and food production for that population; however Borneo is not volcanic so once the forests are cleared and the topsoils are gone, it will become difficult if not impossible to replace the lost soil nutrients. There could be serious famines ahead. I would have thought southern Sumatra was a better option for sustainability and transportation options. It’s also be closer there to Singapore and Malaysia and on one of the world’s busiest ship laneways, which would be good for transport and trade.

It would not be as a ghost city, as all central government civil servants are mandatory to move and stay in Nusantara, and they will bring some if not all of their family members. And they need market, school, cafe, etc, these are private sector to handle. So, ghost city will not be happened to Nusantara.

It will not be a ghost city provided: 1. Enough job opportunities created in the new capital & surrounding 2. Affordable housing market 3. Good infrastuctures such as school, hospital, roads, shops, sports & entertintment venues 4. Easy connectivity with other big cities via road, rail and air. I think the Indonesia Government has considered all these factors via an indepth comprehensive study, projection & scenarios planning.

Remember that Washington D.C. was partially built on top of a swamp. If the next government of Indonesia wants to stop the move, they still can still do so at this stage of development. Jakarta is their "New York City" of banking and commerce. That's not going to change for a long time, even if they do move. This news is totally misleading.
1. There is no intention to relocate people of Jakarta to East Kalimantan. Government is only planning to relocate the centre of government administration to new capital. It means only those who are central government employees will need to move to new location. Not all population.
2. This new capital is being built over the industrial forest, human made forest not natural. So the forest is not the natural habitat for wild animals such as orangutan. The forest is and was an industrial forest.
3. There are no indigenious people living in the area so the need to relocate them is very little to none.
CNA should do a detail research before making this kind of news. It is very misleading..

The local indigenous tribe "BALIK" IS THE MOST AFFECTED LOCALS. since they have proven to stay at future capitol suburb location for over hundred years ( around the 18th century they have serve the Kutai Kartanegara kingdom )and some of their tribe land are confiscated without any compensation due to lack of legal document of ownership. And those lands used to be a natural habitat for variety of endemic vegetations and some endemics species of birds,serpents,insects,etc So Stop lying and stay true to your argument cause you are the one misleading the facts.

Well, I feel that the blueprint of the new capital is too utopic and seeing the animated video that is being circulated in the social media, I am more convinced that its too Utopic. Well, i feel that it would be like that of Egypt, Myanmar and Brazil where there are only government buildings and quarters of government employees but not proper residents. Further the structure which looks like wings is too extra. They are wasting the tax payers money on such excess structure. One of the most important thing that they need to remember is that they are not like middle eastern countries which has oil money. So its better to design their government buildings which are efficient and not just showoff and utilise the money on solving the problem in Jakarta itself because those residents of Jakarta are not going to migrate to their new capital. They will remain in Jakarta so its better to spend the money on solving the issues of Jakarta.

I understand the environmental stakes, but if this doesn't happen, more of Jakarta's people will be under water, I mean look at all the garbage flowing into the rivers and oceans after flooding! Once the ne capital is done, there won't be more logging and the government will be able to see the illegal activities and stop it. The city itself shouldn't be so sprawled out, rather focusing on density. It also looks more luxurious, so incapable of offering housing to the poor. All these new capitols have that issue in common, they want high wealth people and high-tech industry, but forget that their people don't have the skills or the money, so bring in rich from other countries, circumventing the reason for the city's development (to give housing to those at risk of losing their homes in flooding) entirely!
Jakarta is unsustainable, but dumping a huge population into East Kalimantan will cause untold damage to that fragile environment putting species like orangutans at serious risk.
It’s the amount of land needed to support such a city that will be the issue. Land will be cleared for padi fields and food production for that population; however Borneo is not volcanic so once the forests are cleared and the topsoils are gone, it will become difficult if not impossible to replace the lost soil nutrients. There could be serious famines ahead.
I would have thought southern Sumatra was a better option for sustainability and transportation options. It’s also be closer there to Singapore and Malaysia and on one of the world’s busiest ship laneways, which would be good for transport and trade.

It is a strategic political decision. At the new location, it is closer to other 3 countries, Singapore Malaysia Brunei, easier to build a new hub and compete with the neighboring countries.

It would not be as a ghost city, as all central government civil servants are mandatory to move and stay in Nusantara, and they will bring some if not all of their family members. And they need market, school, cafe, etc, these are private sector to handle. So, ghost city will not be happened to Nusantara.

One of the reasons why the island of Borneo was chosen was specifically because of the lack of volcanos and low occurances of earthquakes.
It will not be a ghost city provided:
1. Enough job opportunities created in the new capital & surrounding
2. Affordable housing market
3. Good infrastuctures such as school, hospital, roads, shops, sports & entertintment venues
4. Easy connectivity with other big cities via road, rail and air.
I think the Indonesia Government has considered all these factors via an indepth comprehensive study, projection & scenarios planning.

Remember that Washington D.C. was partially built on top of a swamp. If the next government of Indonesia wants to stop the move, they still can still do so at this stage of development. Jakarta is their "New York City" of banking and commerce. That's not going to change for a long time, even if they do move. So, they are still going to have to fix Jakarta's flooding problems or find themselves permanently voted out of office. I wish them all the best.
