It really is a beautiful ride, but it was a really hot last year and the main climbing comes in towards the last 1/3 of the route which is fully exposed to the sun at that time of the day. My wife suffered up that last climb and was ready to call it quits at the last aid station until she heard from a volunteer that it was mostly downhill or flat from there into the finish line. Thanks for sharing your experience.

It was super hot. I can totally relate with your wife's experience. Well done to her (and you) for finishing. I am back there again this year. Hopefully it is a cooler day or I am better prepared for the heat.

Playing it safe in high heat conditions is a good idea. Lovely ride location!

Yes, but I am still troubled by having to withdraw from the 2019 event even though I was cramping so badly I could not pedal. I don't take quitting well, and I need to find a way to adapt to that heat.

@@cyclnvancouver8060 I live in Texas and we have had a very hot summer, the only thing that has helped me is staying hydrated, drinking way more than normally. I drink water that has electrolytes and that has definitely helped cramping as well.

@@Capital194 I have been very focused on hydration as well. I tend to cramp alot. I finally learned the importance of electrolytes on long rides (it only took my several years). Now, I need to also focus on pre-ride and intra-ride nutrition as well as high-heat acclimation.
They say you only learn through failure. I have been learning alot. Hopefully one of these days it all comes together and I get it right.

@@Capital194 I meant to ask what is it like riding in Texas heat? I would assume you go early morning or evening to avoid it.

@@cyclnvancouver8060 yes early in the morning, typically 8 am (early for me) but by the time I am finishing up it is hot! I also tend to push fairly hard which doesn't help. Today I did a 25 mile ride and when I left the house it was about 20°c and I was cold! Evening rides are pretty much out of the question for me as the heat of the day (during Summer) will carry well into the night.

I can see why you like that route. Great scenery.
Around the 40 min mark I kept seeing a guy who reminded me of Dan (in blue). Some high end bikes there too.
You did well riding as far as you did when temps were over 30. Hopefully you didn’t suffer from overdoing it.
I may try for a longer ride this aft. Sunny and temps are nice. Sun feels hot though but not humid, and the shade feels nearly 10 degrees cooler. No strong winds either. Might be an ice cream break somewhere in the ride if I do enough km :)

Without looking, I know the guy you mean. I didn't think of that but you are right.
I love that ride. Hopefully next year the temps are back down to the mid-20's. I can deal with that. But, I do need to work on hot temp. training and adaptation. It seems to be the new big thing in cycling.
I took a week off on my return. Despite constantly questioning myself about that decision, I was right to call it a day. It was a decision I made lightly, but it was the prudent thing to do at that time. And, I wasn't alone. The broom wagon was full for the trip back to Penticton.
It's funny watching that 2 months later. It is sunny today, and 17C. I am starting to feel cold.
      Enjoy the ice cream.

How'd you get back from the aid station?

    • @cyclnvancouver8060
      @cyclnvancouver8060  Před 10 měsíci +1

In the big wine tour van. If you remember last year's ride and the guy that tried to get me off the course, he was there this year and this time I went with him back to Penticton.
The funny thing, I actually had dinner with Karl the Ride Guy, and Karl thought it pretty ironic how I wouldn't leave the course last year when he wanted me off, and this year he tried to talk me into continuing and I was adamant that I was done.
