  • Want to see some serious, punishing battoning? I don't hold back on these guys. Who can take it? Who fails?
Splitting some ash logs with four different knives... I wanted to test the edge durability on the Tops Brothers of Bushcraft I had done all the modifications on and put the ScandiVex edge on. Then there was the Gerber Strongarm, which I love using and it really enjoys getting abused, and then there’s the Becker BK-10 Crewman. It’s one of the Camillus, New York versions. Of course, I have modified it and you will see the modifications in the video. And then there’s kind of the Cinderella story/new favorite knife and that would be the ESEE Laser Strike. It really shined in this little experiment. He did great helping split the piece of ash and getting the stuck BK-10 out. And then it is a great splitter and feather sticker and general utility usage knife on its own.
After fixing the handles on the ESEE and the Tops, they are both back in fighting condition. The Tops took an edge back quite easily. I’m really happy with the end result. I’ve taken it out into the woods a few times and used it to chop things and I just really am quite happy with it. But when I need to go out and work in the woods and do some real heavy work, the one I reached, for now, is the ESEE Laser Strike. It felt weird not grabbing the Becker BK-10.
Here is the video where I painstakingly modified the Gerber Strongarm:

Love your vid's brother. Really dig the mods to your BK10, very cool.

Thank you very much for the kind compliment. Glad you like the BK-10. It’s quite a knife.

Really appreciate the way you baton the crap out of a knife. Much respect.

Thank you very much. You’re the first person ever say that. I figure if you’re going to baton, then go for it! If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway!

I have been eyeballing that Laser Strike for way to long. Esee should have a restraining order on me for stalking .
I have had so many knives that have come and gone yet this one always alluded my purchase.
It fits all the cool factors
    Spear point+perfect length ✅️
    High saber/full flat grind ✅️
    Quality kydex sheath ✅️
    Squared yet rounded scales ✅️
    Life time warranty ✅️
    Esee pride of ownership✅️
I'm a sucker for kephart style blades ...The whole package looks awesome. I whish I had purchased the LS over my Benchmade Bushcrafter. I could have saved $100 a ton of frustration and buyers regret.
Heck I could have bought the LS and the Becker BK10 which also has been on my list of must haves.
I need to just buy one the next time I have the funds...Which means ...not very soon😏

I was skeptical at first, but I'll tell you what, it really is a great knife.

Another great video Sir. I really enjoy the fact that you have no fear or shame in making something fit you better. I have a laser strike also and deleted the first finger choil. Now I can get all the way to the guard for up close work. I did get the G10 aftermarket scales from TheKnifeConnection. After seeing your comments regarding the 2 attachment points....I may have to address that. Looking forward to the next one Sir. Thanks so much.

Thank you so much for the nice words and your description of what you’ve done to the same knife. So far the handle has been quite comfy. But who knows… I may get very bored one day and decide to take out that first finger notch.

@@knifetimestory That was really my only "complaint", was the choil. I've never been much of a fan of them, insofar as a bushcraft context, which is my regular lens. I like the ability to get in close to have that up close carving control. Anyways....thanks so much Sir. Looking forward to the next one.

I tried to like the laser strike. I thought it was too heavy and unbalanced. I love all other Esee's. I haven't tried the others you tested

Wound up getting rid of the Laser Strike. Just never bonded with it. Only two out of that batch that I still have are the BK10 and Gerber.
      Glad you watched. Thank you.

I like the way that tops knife came out. And I've also been interested off and on with that laser strike. Interesting that tops made it too once upon a time. Who knew? (Well obviously you knew. But I sure didn't...)
Have you ever, in a fit of good judgement and fine taste, wanted to get rid of that ugly Becker thumb ramp? Blech! I have and did on my BK 9. I also added my own jimping. And I might have also dropped the clip point a wee bit... Knife is 3x better than it was, and it was awesome out of the box. I like my BK9. Please dont try to talk me down of THAT ledge....
Great job. Missed the music. (No I didn't.) Thanks for sharing. Good knives. Dodge truck?!? 😬

Ha ha! Sorry about the lack of music. I just couldn’t find the right disco tune for you! Yes it is a Dodge 2500 set up with a fifth wheel. And a 1 ton locker in the rear because I live in snow country. As far as the thumb ramp goes, yes… I actually had the grinder going and the knife in my hand and then I decided against it. Because in the past, I actually built a BK 10 out of a BK7 and did just that. I constantly hem and haw about that. Who knows… Someday I might just get ridiculously bored and wipe it out. It’s really not necessary. Well… It actually is if they want to be able to sell them to the government, but for you and me, it’s just an embellishment that we don’t need.
So glad you like the way the Tops turned out. I am quite pleased. But it has not knocked the ESEE Laser Strike or the BK-10 out of top billing.

    Sir,
Just curious if you're running a benchtop buffing wheel, or a buffer in a handheld medium (i.e. drill or Dremel, etc). Kinda curious as to your thoughts, as to the better option for the hobby modder? I picked up an ultimate hunter in XHP, recently with some sporty scratches, and kinda thought about buffing them out, to get the knife looking better. Appreciate any input. Thanks much.

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  Před rokem +1

I have two benchtop buffers offering four different wheels and compounds. I rarely use it. But, I did on the Tops to "soften up" the thumb ramp and polish the rounded area where the pointy finger guard was. That's it. I did not even use a polishing compound, just a cutting compound. I've only used a Dremel to replicate the finish on a Randall Made Knife. Having visited their shop, I discovered what they actually use. Quite elementary when you get down to it.
As for your Ultimate Hunter. There are no polished surfaces on the blade, so I would not try to polish that. And the G-10 is satin finished. So again, I'd not polish that. I used a worn-out 400 grit paper to clean up both of my Ultimate Hunter Handles after I modified them. It works great and blends right in. After that, I use my hand to rub them and it removes any dusty residue and blends stuff in wonderfully.

@@knifetimestory I did watch your sheath video the other day. I had my own idea how to modify the OEM sheath but I Ended up just removing everything except the belt loop portion and lashing it with Paracord to the plastic portion that holds the knife. It works fine but it's temporary. I ordered a custom Kydex sheath and I will be using that after I get it hopefully. In summary, The Gerber Strongarm, OK knife if you have sharpening skills but the sheath sucks.
