As a teacher of industrial woodworking and tooling for 30 years, I find this use of a drill as a router with some skepticism. As the video shows, it IS possible. However, the 3-jaw drill chuck is designed to hold cylindrical tools working in the axial direction. Router chucks use collets for use with bits cutting with pressure on the radius. Using the drill chuck this way can result in the tool coming loose due to vibration. The lower rpm increases the chip load at the cutting edge, increasing vibration. Not really safe.
Given how inexpensive basic routers are today (I recently got a full sized one from Ryobi on sale for under $30), and how slow this 'device' spins in comparison to what's needed to do a decent job, you'd have to be stranded on a desert island (with unlimited fuel for your generator and an unlimited spare parts inventory) for this to make any sense at all. It's both clever and totally dumb at the same time.
I have a spare router, so if I take the base plate off, I could use it as a substitute for the drill in this project. I'm so excited. I think this could work.
There is also a drill attachment called a A Portable Drill Guide that you can buy and drill at any angle you like and I would think you could insert a router bit onto it and get the same result as a router without buying a router. 😂😂 P.S. The Portable Drill Guide can also be used a as small drill press. 😂😂

Save time and money by buying the right tool for the job. They’re called drills because they are designed to drill holes unlike routers that are designed to shape and make grooves in wood.

Very cool hack. You used some cheap particle board, drawer slides and other spare parts laying around to hack out a router. Of course the router bits were not hacked out. If you did, it would be an exceptional hack. Thanks.
This is why we need a functional "Thumbs Down" button: Wafer board will not hold up to the stresses and torque that the drill generates, especially if it hits a knot in the workpiece. I can easily imagine it exploding into several pieces. This thing is stupid dangerous. If an employee walks into my shop with one of these, I would immediately confiscate and destroy it, and fire him on the spot. The depth control provided by the bolt lacks the precision that proper routing needs, plus it looks like the bolt would interfere with the drill housing if you're doing deep cuts. The handle by the chuck is the wrong place to hold a router. If the bit hits a knot or experiences blow-out, the resulting torque could send the whole machine flying out of your hand. And then there's the cost: sure, this was made by scrap wood pieces, a couple drawer slides, and other parts, but your time is also worth something. Buying a proper router would probably be cheaper than the hourly wages it took to make this hack, and it would be a better tool.
It's no secret now, but I don't think it will catch on. There's something called a 'router' that does an even better job, and you don't have to build it yourself!
Sorry I'd never do this. In my country you can find a cheap electric trimmer/router that would cost not much more than the time and materials for building this jig, plus it would perform way better, and you wouldn't have to worry about burning out your drill which is not designed for continuous running like this. Unless for some reason you have multiple free electric drills lying around...this is not a good looking hack.
*Do you like this drill secret?*
Quero compartilhar como faço?
The rpm of drill press is too small for this. Work, so the finish is not as good as trimmer machine.

If only there was a pre-made tool to use those router bits in
Yeah....it makes so much sense to spend 2 hours putting all this together, not to mention the cost of all the parts, than to simply use a router.
Bagus. Tapi mending beli alatnya satu set.
Lebih murah dari harga bornya😂😂😂👍👍👍
Good idea, but any drill doesnt have the RPM (the speed) necessary for a drill bit to work properly, and nowadays, a router is cheaper than before.
It's a router bit not drill bit but you are correct about the rpm's.
