- So I bought a Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 Diesel for scrap value as a short term solution to being without a car. A few months and 3,000+ miles later and I'm still rolling around in it so here is my thoughts on it.
First and foremost, the Xsara Picasso is ugly, an ugly bubble as I described it. But with unreal MPG, extremely comfy seats and a massive boot, it definitely ticks a few boxes.
To see how much I paid for it, skip straight to the end of the video, but if want my honest opinion after a few months over ownership, stick around for the full thing.

@@macswhips - Yes I have. I own several much older Citroens (GS from 1971, 1978 & 1979, CX from 1985, Dyane from 1980), so the Picasso does not actually look like an old car to me.

Honestly they are epic. I've moved house twice with just a Picasso.
It regularly transports 2 bikes and a kayak in the back...insane Tardis like dimensions internally.

I've had two of them. A brand new 2004 1.6HDI, full specs leather interior bla, bla, bla. And a few years ago I've got a 2007v 1.6 petrol, base specs.
Absolutely brilliant piece of machinery! A real Citroen all the way. All with an excellent value for money balance.
On this video the guy didn't even scratch the surface of the practicality bits built into this amazing design.
Word of caution. Earlier models I believe until 2007. Don't have DPF, one less headache to deal with.
And the battery access, under the seat, is still simple and easy with two simple levers. After that it's bolted in place!!! Due to more stupid "legislation". All in all making it a "pain in the a" to reach the battery! Two details I find rather important.
The Picasso was always a very underrated car. Absolutely brilliant if you are into bangernomics. I had been looking at cars around the £3k mark, but actually seeing this video has reminded me there are still plenty of useful budget cars about just for a few hundred quid.
Bangernomics 😂 I’m going to be using that going forward. But couldn’t agree more. I sold cars for a little while and the amount of people breaking the monthly budget to get something brand new is crazy! Some decent cars about that are genuinely affordable
How does only have 64 views? It was in my recommendations for crying out loud! Very much enjoyed watching mate! Could do a whole series about cheap cars to buy in the current economic climate.

I bought one 2nd hand - 1.6 petrol - and I loved it to bits. It had been treated to a new cam belt and clutch by the previous owner and used it to go from North Yorkshire to Carlisle TWICE every weekend to collect daughter and deliver her back from Uni. Did nigh on 40k miles in a year - never let me down and for some reason at just over 100k miles when it got a small oil weep I crapped the bed and got rid rather than get it fixed. Miss it to this day and sadly all the good ones have now gone.
Don't forget you can dismantle all the back seats easely when you need the space :D
Ah I didn't know that. But I've often wondered how you see some loaded like a van!
@@macswhips - I've mentioned on another comment. You haven't started scratching the practicality side of this car! On that spec all seats can be regulated back and forth. Back rests can recline. Seats can fold or be removed. All that individually!
Remove the rear middle seat and suddenly you can carry boards, ladders, etc. 2.4m long!! Or a full size mountain bike without taking the wheel(s) off! And still seat 4. Fold it and there's a small table or arm rests for the rear passengers. Stuff 1.5liter water bottles on any door. Two more on the AC cooled glove box. Smaller cans/bottles can also fit in there safely. It's designed for it. Awesome for long family trips.
The central tunnel is awesome to walk back and forth. But also to set your back pack or purse. I noticed you are missing the modu box. Which is fantastic when you go shopping or simply need to stow a bunch of loose items on the trunk. On that spec a cargo net was also provided. To hold random items on the >500L trunk! The rear 12V plug is perfect for the cooling box, or phone charging. Etc.
Spill something, no worries. All surfaces clean rather easily! ;-)
A very good review,i have one of these a vtx 1. 6 hdi and has all the bells and whistles of the exclusive without the sunroof.These are amazing cars if you get a clean well serviced example,its super comfortable,and i see no issue with handling,but as you say it really lives up to its mpv label, 5 stars for practicality,i use it as a car,a van (with back seats out) and a micro camper,and yes excellent fuel economy.

I had a new Picasso in 2001 and drove 79000+ miles in two years. Apart from Servicing I only Bought two tyres. It was very comfortable and roomy. Mine was the 90 bhp version but it would cruise in Europe at a quiet 77mph and over the lifetime it averaged 52 mpg. In value for money terms it far outweighed my subsequent Merc and BMW. It was excellent..

in black, it's nicer, I've only got a petrol 1.8i 2000 model, it runs great and no rust at all, which surprises me as it's almost 23 years old.. The space you have in it is indispensable, it's cool, there's room for some big guys without having to look bad .. ps good video more of that . :)
I agree, black is my go to colour on all things with wheels. You do hear that they are prone to rust so that is very impressive. Completely, agree. I've never experienced a car with that much space!

This is a beautifully functional and well designed car. A remarkable car everyone recognises and remembers. The comfort and simplicity in these cars is unmatched. My 2008 164k 1.6 110cv, returned me the pleasure of driving. It’s perfect if you enjoy the rides and not just go from point A to B in the fastest possible way. No offence, but whoever thinks this car is ugly should stick to the vulgarity of modern german cars. Here you are actually driving not being driven surrounded by high-technology. If you are considering don’t think twice.
Completely agree with all of that…apart from the design 😅 I’m with you on some new cars being vulgar. I should add I still have my very first car which is a Peugeot 106 and I absolutely love the dainty French design. But the Xsara Picasso, brilliant as it is (for everything you mentioned), is a blob!
But looks are subjective so who am I to disagree with you!

Oh dear it's uncomfortable ..... the bolsters in the passenger seat just "kick" you and i have to get out and lean on the cars when he drops his "Just Eat" delivery off !!!

That is very interesting. I have had short drive in an XC60 and it felt fairly nice but it was only a 5 minute cruise!
One of my cars is a Xsara Picasso 2.0 hdi which is the more robust engine. I use mine as a van to carry keyboards, PA and speakers around although I maintain it and it is kept in good clean condition. I would check that mpg. 55 to 60 mpg is more realistic for 1.6 hdi engine. I wouldn’t say they’re ugly but a refreshing change from seeing all these SUV shaped vehicles on the roads today. Sills can rot on them and the 1.6 hdi engine can be troublesome if not maintained. The diesel engines are not ULEZ compliant.
Funnily enough, somebody else commented saying they had the 2L diesel engine and they transported music equipment in it!
What is the 2L engine like? Yeah you’re probably right with the mpg. To be honest, I was just a bit blown away by it.
Unfortunately, like the other chap said and yourself point out, ULEZ will likely kill these cars off
I've had 2 of these now both bought for less than £500 & my latest is still going strong five yrs later. Yes they arnt the prettiest cars but prob one of the best for comfort & space. Common faults with these are rotten cills, the seals on the steering racks fail & they start pumping power steering fluid out of them also the ball joints are weak. But all parts are cheap as chips so just keep fixing em easy enough
Brilliant! They do seem to have a nack of keeping going! Yes the one I had had rotten sills, I did make another video with all the things wrong with the car and how I sold it. To be honest, the sills on mine were so rotten that I decided to let it go really cheap. I'm not a welder and despite having friends that are, I didn't think it was worth the risk!
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And for me, the Xsara Picasso is far more attractive than, say a Nissan Juke or a Toyota C-HR, or indeed than most current cars. Added to which it's practical and relatively cheap to run. What's not to like?

I'd probably agree with your take on the Picasso over the Juke and C-HR...but they're not great looking either! But like you said! Beauty if subjective! But I agree on on the other points as well, a brilliant all rounder!
Actually i own a Xsara 1.8 2004 model. Only drawbacks i find are a few.
The panorama roof air deflector makes more noise than models without one.
The green dash screen color is super ugly. (i modified it to bleu.)
I don't have a spoiler. It definitely looks better with one.
Only one din radio option. Two din would have been nice.
And the window Pilar can obstruct the view in some situations.
In overall a good car.
Imho it's better looking than other similar cars in it class of built years.
Serving them is easier than modern cars though. Lots of it can be done diy.
Edit: if strange odeur is coming into the cabin the rubber strip on the hood/Bonet may be wornout. The air intake for the cabin is right under the front windshield.
So any oil and grease heated by the engine is sucked in because that rubber strip isn't sealing good enough.
The strip is hollow so running some from isolation through it should help. Ofcourse always check your EGR and exhaust it's leaking.

Economical yes, but 70mpg is a bit of a stretch. That smoke gets worse with mileage and eventually will fail the MOT
Yeah you're probably right, I never did genuine test but it wouldn't have been far off! Or at least from my perspective after averaging 25 MPG for 3 years in the S5 😂

Im going to look at one tomorrow, 2006 and only has 65,000 on it. Plus only has 1 owner. Im part exchanging my headache of a land-rover discovery 2 2001. Ive spent a small fortune on the land-rover and its just got so many little issues and is expensive to fix. I'll have to get over down sizing and how ugly the picasso is because having a reliable affordable car is better than an expensive pain in the bum 😂 plus i have 2 babies so im hoping the picasso can fit us all in... thanks for this video, helped me get over the ugly of the car. 😂

My dad had one for a few years, it was such a bad car, reliable yes, but here in the austrian alps it was horrible to drive on mountain roads, at some point you couldn't feel any steering at all and you could hear all the rubber squeeking from the chassi bending. The sound system had worse quality than the newer iphone and over all it's just ugly. I forgot to mention that it overheated several times when we drove to italy with a caravan that was 200 kg lighter than the maximum towing capacity. Such a shit car

It's "pretty damn ugly". But beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I think they look OK - but maybe it has just grown on me. We're most of the way through 2023, and I've been driving my Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 HDi since 2006, and quite honestly, it's the best car I've had. And it gets 60 MPG! It's very spacious, and if the back seats are removed (which takes all of a couple of minutes), the loading space is like a van. I recently brought a big guinnea pig pen home for my grandkids, and it's a really big one with up- and down-stairs for the animals.
The car has given trouble a couple of times, but nothing I haven't been able to fix myself. Be aware of the maxi fuses - if one blows, it''s really, really not obvious where they are. See czcams.com/video/ybFK2OU2iT8/video.html (yup - that's me!)
That is very true. There are worse looking cars in the same class I have to say! 17 years and still going strong. Sounds like you have looked after it. What mileage is it on?
Yeah the load space is incredible, there is a chap near me who does deliveries and he uses a Xsara Picasso. Always filled to the brim!
