- I needed a cheap fence solution around our garden to prevent toddlers getting too close to the edge of a wall. This fence was put together using 12mm rebar and roof battens, and I'll show you how I made them and also cover the total cost breakdown in the video.

Thanks to The Aiden Project for the idea @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
its a railing ...wtf is a fence? ohhh the big things that look like walls and not a railing
I could have almost expected a crude outcome from the pragmatic purpose and material choices, but you always manage to craft your projects to be uncompromisingly decorative too. Thank you for leaving in the jig "doh" moment, we all have those!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey Keith, I got this again on autoplay and it occurred to me that the long lower batten might sag anyway, because the long rebar pieces go through that piece of wood. So that batten is unsupported, and it's even weighted by the other rebar pieces. To reduce this risk you could put some nails in the same hole where the rebar goes through the wood, so that the wood can grip on the rebar more. Like keys in a keyway, if that makes sense. Also congrats for the 250k subs. Been watching since shed number 1!
I was a bit iffy about this when it started but the end job(by) actually looks really good! Such a simple way to create something that looks very cool!
Thank you
Great video! Actually, the best part of the build was when you realized the jig was "stuck," and instead of pissing and moaning, you laughed and found a quick solution. It is amazing what you can accomplish with salvaged timber, which is why I have so much (probably too much!).
Thanks! 👍
This is one of your best projects Keith. For the money you spent, to the end result... Absolutely brilliant. Gives us a lot to think about. Well done!
Thank you
The part I love the best is being able to still see the yard unobstructed. Fab job, chook!
This is brilliant! I love the look of painted rebar with wood for a fence.
Thank you!
I love it! It’s the cutest fence I’ve ever seen! Well done! Now add some fairy lights! Adorbs!
Well done. I can see the addition of an LED light strip under the top rail would add some nice ambiance after dark.
This is an attractive and effective solution. Your instructions were spot-on. Thanks!!
Thank you
That turned out really nicely. Frugal but fine.
That fence looks fantastic, great project that probably turned out better than expected! Well done Keith
Looks great! Also, turn them vertically, put some blocks of wood for some stand-off, maybe reinforce the corners with L-shaped brackets and you've got yourself a handsome modern trellis - grow some climbing roses or some clematis up it. Good job.
Love the design, such an effective solution for minimal outlay
Good idea on cleaning the ReBar before applying the Red Oxide. Actually when it recommends the surface to be 'rust free' it really means no loose or pitted rust; a dry light surface rust is what is needed as gives a surface that the Red Oxide can grip into. The surface covering will last much longer and shouldn't peel off.
Was hoping you may have found a 'Vibrating tool' (Ooo err, missus) to help compact the postcrete mix - something I've been looking for for many months.
Looks smart. What a good idea.
Lots of people dislike using rebar for anything other than burying in concrete. Never worked out why, especially when you compare the price of it to plain round bar! I reckon it gives a really nice result and goes particularly well with wood
Completely agree! 👍
@RagnBoneBrown I built a rose arch entirely from rebar a few years ago. Coat of hammerite on it and it looked just as good as anything you'd buy in a harden centre, but for less than ¼ the price. Nice and easy to weld too, as there's no risk of blowing holes in it. Even with my poor welding 😆
This was great, hard to picture looking so good at the start but turned out wonderfully. Great video
Man, this looks fantastic. Great inspiration.
Absolutely mint looks fantastic 😊
Great project, looks nice and very serviceable. If it were me, I would round off the corner by the steps, little ones are known for missing steps, its right at eye level for a little person. Great build!!
Another beautiful job!
Phosphoric acid is good for converting rust. I bought 5 litres off Ebay several years ago and it wasn't expensive. It can be used over and over again. Every workshop should have a can. Great video by the way.
That looks great!
Looks fantastic 👏
Looks great Keith !! Well done!
Brilliant job Keith. Well done!
What a brilliant idea!
Honestly my favourite part of this video was your over wall jig. Literally a piece of genius (after the alteration 😅).
Ahh the classic pop a leg up, knee and foot brace. A true staple of the lone diyer 😆
Lovely job, well done!
Excellent idea and result! Well done.
Looks great, very well done
I've used postcrete to set some 9 inch square wooden gateposts. More expensive than mixing concrete, but much easier, and ideal for a job like this where the quantities are not too much and you need a little at a time - you wouldn't want to mix a small amount for each panel, but nor would you want a big batch sitting around half the day until you get to the last one.
Nice job, Keith. And your lawn is wonderful!
brilliant! gonna give this a try. thanks for sharing!!
What a great looking little fence you have created, love it!
It is a neat job and one i may emulate. Relevant building regs for balustrade stipulate a 100 mm sphere shouldn't be able to pass through the railing gap, so you got that right
Great idea and it looks nice too
That is beautiful! Such a great solution. You have a lucky family! As a little girl, my best memories are of going to the hardware store with my dad on Saturday mornings. Probably why I ended up restoring old houses. That and going to the lumberyard with my mom. Ya think?
Brilliant cideo and the finished project looks great!!
Your grass looks amazing!
That looks amazing 👌
I live in a place where the soil is very rocky. Those auger bits really work well BUT when the auger hits a big enough rock you get damn near close to breaking your wrist.
Simple but functional. Looks great too.
Another amazing project, Keith, well done! As ever, it was interesting watching you work and think your way through it. Thank you.
You could put a screw through the bottom wood onto the leg to have load transfer of the frame bottom as well as the top.
that came out a lot more elegant than I was expecting, great job!
Looks much better than I was expecting. The rebar comes up nicely.
Looks awesome!
Wow! The end result is so good, you must be well chuffed with that. Looks great against the rest of the garden
Excellent video, and a brilliant idea, really enjoyed watching. Thank you.
looks really good man!
Great work on the fence Keith! Thank you for sharing the video with us!💖👍😎JP
That looks great I might make some decking rail panels like this thanks for the video
The fence looks incredible! Watching the whole process was a joy, and I've learned a whole lot!
Excellent job, Keth
Thank you;
Nice job Keith, not only frugal but looks good too.
I always love how frugal you are 😊
Another great inspirational post
Look great well done
Looks fab! The pictures of the aiden project looked awesome as well. Must watch that too 😊
Great work! The jig getting stuck is funny! Haha!
This looks great. Love the idea. It looks great. And what a great price
That looks nice!
A really nice looking project 👌
Well done Keith. Nice mix of wood and steel, simple yet durable divider.
That looks great Keith. Love the use of the rebar. I did spot your jig problem as you were putting up the first panel, but multi tool to the rescue!
Very nice, I'm gonna try the rebar thing on my fence🔥
Great Job .... Never realised that Re-Bars were so cheap ...... I used to make 'Plasterers Plungers' out of them back in the day - (Pre-Drills of course ) ... PLUS! - It was always FREE! on sites back then 😂😂
Top job and no background music, thanks
I really like how that turned out. I see that in a future build for me.
Love your videos Keith 👍
Amazing work & content again, nice one
This turns out so beautiful. Originally I was going to pass this video. I am so glad I watched it. I learned something today.
I reckon that looks really good very smart but fits in a garden really well
Beautiful, thanks! I have rebar and wanted to do something like this but wasn’t sure how, now I know.
That is a very smart fence.
Loving that Auger. Beats using a trowel like I've been doing
What an amazing project, im defo "borrowing" this idea.
That looks really good.😊😊
a very smart outcome - now I'm going to be wracking my brains trying to figure out how to use rebar in a project myself!!
Good work!
Looks good Keith. The only bit which made me chuckle was your line about not having to stop tanks. Give it a few years once the little one is not so little, tanks will seem like child’s play 😂
Looks great Keith...you've nailed it with making it work for the two objectives you set out to do !, inspiring ideas once again ... thanks.
Thanks 👍
Nice job Keith and very frugal! I would have been tempted to lay some weedblock and gravel underneath it as trying to mow the lawn around those posts is going to be a hassle. Something you can do afterwards, I guess.
Thank you! I have a strimmer so I'll be using that to cut the grass underneath 👍
Pretty cool idea and it turned out well, you could also substitute the rebar for galvanised conduit that is also pretty inexpensive.
Fence looks really good, industrial and rural all in one! + + +
Looks great 👍😃
Thanks, this has give me a great idea 🙂
Great job Keith, the end result was super!
Thanks Geoff!
That looks really good. A great result! I would say that moving the longer rebars to a more central position on the panel made little difference because they are only supporting the upper batten, whereas the weight of all the bars is on the lower batten. Doesn’t seem to have sagged either way.
But the bottom rail would sag and all my rebar would fall out
@@RagnBoneBrown but have you fixed those longer rebars to the bottom rail (by adhesive or some mechanical fixing)? Or are they just going through holes? If the latter then it’s not supporting any of the bottom rail.
Looks good.
Simple and good looking fence. I made a dog kennel and used rebar as the bars a few years ago.
I think it looks really nice. Black barn paint would look cool on the wood.
Looks great
Nice job keith!
A lovely project. Nice work!
Many thanks!
Brilliant, well done Keith, that looks great and on a budget too, that seems a good price for the Re-bar, last time I bought some (during Covid) it cost me a good deal more !
Roof battens, gravel boards, fence posts and CLS are my favourite starting point for a project as they're standardised and therefore competitively priced !
You've now only got to work out how to stop over-enthusiastic Dads, Uncles and Grandfathers from kicking footballs into it and going A over T onto the patio over it ! 😜
Ha ha! Thank you
That turned out great Keith 👍 I laughed when you got your jig stuck and wondered how many of us would admit we would have fallen into that trap as well 😂
