    Honestly, the truest thing on this video is save the white. I'm still learning to save the white and I'm starting to learn that the white is crucial. It's so difficult so I'm glad you mentioned trying to paint in a monochromatic style!

    I can't believe I've never thought of using my pipette to wet the pan/palette! Great video.

  • @emilwestgaardhenriksen1715

    "fill the whole page up with colour" this is exactley what one of my art teachers told me back in school to do when we where trying out watercolours, and this is exactley the reson why I have not touched this medium since. He wasn't a good teacher I know thst now, I have been thinking about giving it a chance again. Thank you for a very informative and great video😁

    I love the idea of working with a transparency chart to practice shading and the idea of trying to work with just the one colour for shading techniques! I will definitely give these a try this week :)

    All wise advice. I like how you stick to "artist" language...like value and hue. That's how artists talk and communicate specifics to each other. It's important to learn the language. Great video.

I used to do just paintings but have been interested in illustration for a while now, and thinking about switching my works a bit, incorporating more of illustrative pieces so you sharing your opinions and experience in the field is very appreciated. Your chameleon illustrations is my favourite btw but they are all very sweet and beautifully rendered. Thank you once again and have a lovely day. Greetings from England :)

    Taking a slightly different perspective, “Transparency in 2D design is simply the quality of being able to see through (or partially see through) one or more layers in an artwork. Like texture, transparency can be real or it can be implied or suggested. Opacity is a similar term but refers to the inability to see through a layer.”
    When I listened to the beginning of your presentation it seemed that you might be equating the value of light and dark colors with transparency. My thought is that you can have dark colors that are transparent or opaque and light colors that are transparent or opaque, unrelated to value.
    A light color such as say, Hansa Yellow, can be as opaque or transparent as say, Ultramarine Blue, and the transparency of a color may be impacted by the properties of the minerals that make up the color. Some colors simply are more transparent than others regardless of the water added, just as other colors are more granular.
    It is true that when you add water to a color, you can achieve a lighter value of that color. I just think it is good to remember that transparency is about the ability to see through a color, regardless of whether it is light or dark. Value does not, in my mind, equal transparency. Thanks for the opportunity to comment and happy painting!

    • @elcidbob
      @elcidbob Před 4 lety

      In a way, you're being just as reductive. With watercolor, most everyone will be painting on a white substrate and the only time that thinning will result in a darker value is if you're painting over something that's already got a darker value, which quite often in this medium is a rare case.
      In a vacuum, yes, thinning only affects opacity and saturation. In practice, it affects saturation, value, and possibly hue because of how it interacts with other layers.

    As someone who's currently switching from the student set I got when I first started back in April to Artist grade, I've learned that last step is especially true. I recently got a pack of Qors just for fun, and wow, the claims are at worst slightly overstated. They spread easily. I much prefer the brand I'm using now, though the Qors are also fun to use now and then. Step 1 also cannot be overstated. I work on that one a lot and only occasionally use the white paint I have (Generally just for tiny highlights). Still working on steps 2 and 3.
