  • "You cannot make deals with or trust Putin."
There was a time where Putin "worked hard" to get close with Nato, but his "insecurity" means he can't be trusted, says former British Ambassador to the Russian federation Roderic Lyne.

It's ironic. If Putin had followed the term limits of the original Russian constitution and left in 2008 he would be remembered as a great leader who restored the Russian economy after the chaos of the 90's and regained Russia's place as a major power internationally. By holding onto power and attacking his neighbors Putin will be remembered as the man whose mad ambitions led Russia to ruin at home and abroad. As the saying goes, you either leave office as a heroic leader or stay long enough to see yourself become a villainous tyrant.

A good example of this is the late Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. He freed Zimabweans of the yoke of the white man, then killed thousands of people who belonged to the weaker tribal group and then ruled Zimbabwe with an iron fist and into the ground economically. To top if all, he continued to live until age 92 and had to be pushed out of the presidency rather unceremoniously by party members

@@user-su5cm1kh9n You could say the same for Yeltsin after his time in office. I know Putin was never a saint and should not have been made president. Despite it all he could have probably made some kind of deal to make sure he wouldn't be prosecuted just like Yeltsin did and retired from politics. Unfortunately for everyone the man chose to hold onto power rather then to walk away from it.

You're right he could've been remembered as a great leader and the savior of Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. But it would've been a lie. He was the villain from the start, murdering countless journalists, political opponents, rival oligarchs, etc. even before he became president. He was just better at fooling Russians and the world back then. Now he's exposed for what he is : a sad, insecure, compulsively lying tyrant with zero morals who's willing to sacrifice the whole population of his country just to save face. Also there's no way he dies of natural causes at this point (unless it happens in the near future). He broke too many lives for that. He'll get the end he deserves : a very violent one.

In putin's mind it was "necessary", creating an enemy is an old tactic to drum up support for a weak leader. There is also no doubt that he has a Machiavellian intelligence which has rather mesmerized the ordinary Russian who up till now has given him a free pass. 4:01 this is a major contribution to Putin steering his regime to become "anti West". Putin fears popular uprisings and does not believe they are "genuine". Vladimir Vladimirovič simply saw the "Orange revolution" as meddling by the West in his "sphere of influence" - His KGB background will not allow him to believe that people have "self will" in politics.
(this is a view shared by Julia Ioffe, see here comments and interviews for PBS specials on Putin and Russia).

It is naive to say that Putin was ever nice and civilised. A sociopath, broken in childhood by multiple abandonment, beating, hunger and humiliation from stepfather and peers. At 9 yrs old adopted by distant relative fanatic KGB-ist and fan of Stalin. From this point he had to lie about his life before adoption and he has been lying since then. Bullied, he started to believe early that only power of fists matters, so he started learning martial arts. He was a Leningrad hooligan. Sadly, his decent martial arts teacher (chance to recover) was replaced by criminal. When portraits of Stalin were thrown away in Russia, a youngster Putin took one out of a rubish bin and put it on a wall of a building he lived. So fascination with Stalin was deeply rooted in him, he dreamt about being a KGB agent. He liked Soviet Union very much except the part that he could not have huge money, and the new era gave him this possibility -as a corrupted mafioso clerk in Petersburg. He was suitable for Yeltsin to cover up some swindle with methods typical for mafioso KGB-ist, and he was efficient. However nobody perceived him as outstanding, rather as Yeltsin puppet, so he was promoted. At the beginning he just wasn't self confident enough to show all his obscurity to the world, he was just observer of the West. Not used to democratic rules he has developed a deep contempt to the West. He hasn't hesitated to instagate false terrorist attack on his own citizens only to start Chechen war and be elected as a saviour. From this time he repeats this pattern all over again in Georgia, Syria, Ukraine with the same cruelty.
Please remember this picture: during documentary film festival in London about cruelties, tortures of Putin's Chechen war the filmmakers and activists watched helplessly Putin travelling in coach with the Queen!!!
Tony Blair didn't want to read a report about situation in Chechenya. Putin was already a villain.
Cynicism, greed for money plus some lack of knowledge and naivity - the Western leaders are responsible for strenghening Putin's wealth and power!!!!!!!!
