Confidence plays such a big role in our ability to put ourselves out there. It’s different for each of us, some of us have a long relationship with it, we seemingly had it from a young age and others have had to cultivate it. From fake it till you make it, or a mask to hide behind to just a natural way of being, asking some close friends and creatives about their relationship with confidence turned into a series of incredible conversations which I’m so excited to share with you. I hope there is a thread of inspiration or permission in this video to help anyone going through a bit of a slump in their creative process.

Jono thank you for this video. I am a 66 y.y. Veteran from Canada I have always drawn on a drafting table, mechanical style, I have recently started drawing freehand again ie. sketching with graphite. Two things I have learned first you have to take your ego out of the equation for confidence to bloom, and finally when you do fall, and we all do, you have to pick yourself up and then ask friends to help.
This helps a lot .... as an artist I'm always insecure about my work... whenever you post any new videos or new drawings... I feel so inspired... thank you for sharing such great works with us..🖤🖤

I think most creatives have this type of feeling. I find that I am very eclectic when it comes to art. I don't have just one thing that I'm passionate about. I love using graphite, color pencils, acrylics, and air brushing. Yet I have not crossed over to multi mediums within one piece. I have the mind set that I can try anything, even if I don't know that specific thing, and I will practice until I get a feel for it. Externally I exude confidence, while internally I have doubt and mini panic attacks. It's quite surreal. I feel we are often our own worst enemies. We are far harder on ourselves than most critics would ever be. I'm also not good with negative feedback. I have been knocked down really hard by criticism, and I find it difficult to regain my footing to get up and try again. When I'm in a negative head space I will walk away, sometimes for long periods of time, but I always come back because my heart can't stay away from it. This was such a great video. It is so nice to hear other creatives struggle with the same issues. Love your channel so much. Thank you all

Confidence comes from competence & experience. We all forget the things we take for granted. We can dress ourselves, cycle a bike, write with a pen/pencil, open a door etc. We do so many things from with confidence through 100/1000's of repitations. When I teach kids & adults guitar I get them all to think of these things. Give them a new piece of music, they fail or freak out. Teach them how to play each section, now they have an understanding. Through proper practice we gain confidence. When a student can play a piece of music without looking at the sheet music or tab, now they are closer to internalising it. If they can play it with their eyes closes then they have it mastered.
Now obviously you can't draw with your eyes closed or maybe we can if we can visualise it hard enough. Still there's stages of learning we reach or plateaux, musicians, athletes, artists it's all a level of experience. If we doubt ourselves then we are fk'd. We need to remind ourselves we learn in stages & be OK with that level until we reach that next level. As for falling or failing. A kid doesn't give up when learning to walk & neither should we as teenagers or adults. Taking a step out & away is like a reset to get a different perspective. Keep things fresh & challenging & always strive to be better. As artists we're never happy as we internally know we can become better. Always room to improve. That's what life is, constantly learning, wanting to improve, keep ourselves inspired. Motivation comes & goes, routine & habit help us through the dark times. Think of a kid learning to tie their shoe laces for the first time. They can't do it. Show them how is small easy stages, now they have an idea, through constant practice they improve over time until they can tie their shoes without looking or their eyes closed. It's a beautiful thing to watch people that don't believe in themselves until you teach them how. Then they start to grow as people. Always try new things, travel, meet knew people. The world teaches us so much when we step outside & away from our comfort zones. This is where we'll thrive in the future as artists. As we say here in Ireland "there's more than one way to skin a cat". That saying is not literal either. It means there's always another way of doing things or another approach or idea that we have yet to try. Being open is key. I had a guy once meet me on the street in town, he said Eamonn your poems are awful shite. I laughed at him. I said that's OK, that's your opinion or perspective. He didn't know what to say. I said there's loads of people who enjoy them. I write, draw, compose music all for the love of doing these things. They are initially for myself. If I enjoy them then maybe someone else might too. Everyone will have their own audience small or large. They are your crew. Surround yourself with those people who believe in you. The right people will present themselves at the right time & help show us the way. Audiobooks & normal books are another way to learn to build ourselves to keep learning. When your on the right path you'll know it. When your gut is aching listen to it. All warning signs to change what your doing. Hope this also helps someone. All the best from Sligo, Ireland. Eamonn
I appreciate this video because my lack of confidence prevents me from calling myself an artist. I consider myself an art student. I feel that it’s an easy way out of really being looked at in a serious way and pursuing an artistic career.
I think maintaining confidence as a creative Is way tougher than I imagined, and deep down I believe staying confident is what I always need to reach my topmost potentials.. Thanks for this reminder, it was helpful Jono💯

Beautiful video. For me my confidence grew in my sphere of work when I realised I had the interest and ability to learn what was necessary to accomplish a job. Rather than my confidence requiring me to already know how to do everything.

So many profound and thought-provoking comments. I discovered I could draw late in life so my "confidence journey" has been an uneasy one. One thing that has helped is that over the 12 years of drawing I've had many moments of doubt and the drawings not working, but out of that has come learning that almost every time when I go back to the drawing the next day it eventually works. I haven't stopped having lots of moments of doubt but I can now tell myself to believe I can do it because I've done it before. Thanks to all for sharing these insights

I needed this today, thank you. I have been struggling this week with this exact thing. I thought I was going in the right direction with my current work but have been feeling out of balance with it, unsure and stuck. I remember how I was painting on canvas like 5x 5 cm in public, sb seen me like I'm painting and said "i like that painting, I will pay you for it 2zł (0,5 £). This was meaning full moment of my depression.

I have a studio in a large building with other artists and studios. My work is dramatically different than theres much much darker. The people that the others and the organizers bring in, are repelled by my work. Normally i would laugh it off or turn it into anger/frustration and use it as fuel. But lately it just makes me want to leave the space. Like seeing their more upbeat brighter work makes me feel like my natural path is wrong and im stupid for following myself, like i always have. It makes me feel like my instincts are wrong. Im thinking i need to leave the space. How would anyone else respond to something making you doubt yourself?.

I'm struggling with my confidence at the moment I'm 44 for the last 2 years arthritis has ravaged my body to the point where the peak physical health I took for granted is gone and now giving up work is just a matter of when not if I thought at least 1 talent I had for art would b something I could take back up in a more serious manner would be some solice but merely 45 mins of a basic level portrait was so painful that I couldn't continue and has sat as is 4 half a year... I don't know if I can bounce back but I think what I would say is if you think u hav lost confidence in your ability keep checking to make sure u still at least have that ability

This is unrelated to the video but i wanted to ask for your advice for young south africans who want to be in the artists? Starting out or anything like that. I want to pursue art full time but i really can't rely on that for financial reasons. So ive been thinking of looking into "actual jobs" and pursuing art on the side. Im in my second year of uni, studying digital media design. I have zero interest in what im doing. Takes alot of time from drawing. If anyone has any advice, that would be appreciated. Thank you.

What I still don’t understand is I use the same pencil that you use. I used different kinds of paper. And currently using the best paper I can afford. The paper is 200gsm and has beautiful texture. I used every tip you said. But still I do not manage to get the dark shades as dark as yours. Is it because of camera? Colour grading? Or something else?

Why are people so insecure about their work. No one cares about your work. It’s all in your head. Just create art, sell,it if you can and live your life. no one cares whatever anyone else does
I found this video horrifically depressing, I don't have a support base, I have no connections, I do what I do for me as a therapy dealing with neurological stuff...because my 'why' is different. This video is for people who want to 'make it' as artists. If you are an artist with no intentions and do art for art, this video might fuck you up for a couple days...
yes, art gives too much inspiration and empowerment to each individual that i just wonder why they had to make some sort of a replacement for it like AI, that should only be for things us humans deem mundane and replaceable.
What I do not understand is that these artist who undoubtedly have great skill and are really good at what they do lack the judging skills to objectively look at their own work. Take a visual artist for example, someone who draws, is able to really look at the world around them and recreate it and even go beyond that and make up new things. And yet somehow have no friggin clue about where their own level of skill is. Sometimes being complete insecure wrecks, saying they suck while they do not and even a child could see that.
It doesn't make any sense. And I'm going to ruffle some feathers here.
I draw sometimes, as a hobby, I *actually* suck at drawing but I do know some artist who have an established brand so to say, that I talk to once in a while. Saying lines like ''yeah man I suck too''.
No you don't, you're either looking for attention, trying to be overly humble or you are an actual idiot.
About people having confidence in you, which is an external factor. How would you get confidence from someone who doesn't do what you do? Why would you get confident from someone that does not understand? These thoughs cross my mind: ''Yes Debbie, I appreciate that you're confident about me and my skills, but you haven't put a pencil to paper or a pen to a tablet in your life. You're even more clueless than I am''.
It's not nice. But it's the truth.
Unpopular opinion: There is no greater satisfaction than confidence derived from righteousness. If you ever feel like you can not reach the levels you desire, reach out to God through self-discipline and a heart that genuinely only desires to be closer to God. It is one of the most difficult things anyone can do, because it requires letting go of our own ambitions and knowledge and relying on the simple fact that we exist to serve something greater than what human ability can interpret. The talents we were born with will then develop into something with more meaning and intent. It isn't something we can manufacture and that is what makes it so special.
