    I purchased a Cobra Speedheater 2 years ago and it is the best investment I've ever done. I have a massive old home slathered in paint and it has met every challenge from interior to exterior so far.

    The metabo is designed to work with a vac, then it is clean and also faster. I have been using one for years with an old Festo vac with a 1micron filter.

    I think the key difference is that the Metabo is distributing powdered lead paint all through the environment, whereas the heater with manual scraper is generating scrapings of melted paint which can be collected and disposed of safely.

      @@charliebrady3751 led.in paint is not a solid bar that needs to boil. There are components that become volatile with heat and I agree that there isn't a clear "winner" between the two. Both ways you still have to wear PPE and clean up afterwards. I'd probably take the heat gun but use it in a different way, heating up the next part while I scrape the warm one

      The Metabo has a port for a vaccum cleaner hose, to take things off to a HEPA-filtered vacuum. I was surprised to see them tout PPE for face masks then blow that stuff around right outside their workshop door.

    Oh gosh- we love our Cobra- have the regular Speedheater and Paint Shaver Pro (I think is different than Metabo.) so of the three, the Cobra seems best for window sashes to me, at least, cuz you can strip all of the other contoured bits. And get at the old glazing putty ( just watched that video too) (thanks for tips.)
    The paint shaver and large Speedheater are great for siding and big flat surfaces,but even our wood siding has contour so Cobra it is!
    We’re into the sixth year of loving our 1880s historic house in Central Florida, so always appreciate good advice. Thanks so much!

    I have used the Metabo and various IR tools (speedheater and cobra) extensively - while I like the IR tools for a lot of work - for big surfaces the Metabo wins out every time provided it has a vacuum attached. The Metabo is not the right tool for a window frame (poor test choice) BUT for the side of a house or a boat deck it cannot be beat by the IR tools for speed. If you want to do IR really efficiently you have to apply a thin coat of Linseed Oil about 48 hours before using the IR (extra cost and time). The glass is a none issue because the Metabo is not intended to remove glazing putty. Steam is actually a very very good solution for window frames when you consider labour effort and time.

    • @RulesForRescue
      @RulesForRescue  Před 6 měsíci

      The Metabo also doubles has strength training for long periods of use. 💪

    • @gregorymacneil2836
      @gregorymacneil2836 Před 6 měsíci

      Well the Mebato has weight but on the other side you keep moving and hold it with two hands - holding the original speed heater in one spot on a wall all day with one hand is tremendously tedious even if it is lighter. Stripping paint is hard work regardless of the tool. The best method for windows is probably a steam box @@RulesForRescue

    It's rigged ,no hoover on Metabo plus old blades on it ,you can see the burn marks on the wood from the old blades ,hence it's slower .

  • @AHardy9
    @AHardy9 Před 3 lety +7

    Ty you need to learn how to hold the Cobra to heat an area while you scrape the area you just heated. And, on the profile side the Metabo can only do the flats so NO CONTEST!

  • @stegokitty
    @stegokitty Před 8 měsíci +2

    Metabo Paint Shaver: Is SUPPOSED to be hooked up to a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner, and should still wear a respirator ESPECIALLY if there's lead paint. So much fun having a sweaty mask on your face, especially in the summer. It's noisy. And as was said at the beginning, you can do some serious damage to the wood if you don't get some practice in. You need extra tools to remove glazing. Costs less than the Cobra Speedheater.
    Sounds like nothing but cons to me, because the extra dollars for the Cobra is worth it.
    Cobra Speedheater: Uses InfraRed and doesn't heat the paint to where it combusts, so no breathing apparatus is even necessary. Ahh, to breathe without a sweaty respirator on my face. It's basically silent. You aren't encumbered by a vacuum hose. You use the same tools to remove the glazing. Costs more than the Metabo but with all of the downsides, it's way worth it.
    Sounds like nothing but pros to me, because the extra dollars for the Cobra is worth it.

      We either use Dewalt or Festool sanders, based on the types of work. Both hook to vacuums, but at extremely different price points. The Festool Rotex can remove a significant amount of paint.

    Cobra speedheater was junk, the heat kept cracking the glass so be warned.. That shouldn't happen with the metabo tool.

    • @RulesForRescue
      @RulesForRescue  Před 6 měsíci

      I hate to hear that for you. Since it is heat on, oftentimes, single strength glass, that heat should be reflected by using a number of different items like aluminum flashing, 8”+ broad knife, etc. There is typically less than 30 second of direct heat that the glass can absorb before breaking.

  • @oculusprimal

    All I see is an over priced restorer and overpriced heat gun...

    • @RulesForRescue
      @RulesForRescue  Před 2 lety +1

      These tools are defiantly an investment! The speedheater is a game changer in safety. It uses inferred heat therefore it does not vaporize lead paint. The heat is also direct and not blowing, reducing the risk of fire.

    • @stegokitty
      @stegokitty Před 8 měsíci

      It's not a heat gun. Heat guns use precisely that -- heat, and it can and does cause combustion of lead paint, thereby sending it into the air, thereby requiring some kind of vacuum system and respirators, and a means of getting those fumes out of the house if you're working indoors. The Speedheaters use InfraRed, and do not get the paint to combustion levels. A world of differnce.
