most companies take bank loan against there fair market valuation...
when market valuation goes down, for real reason or due to short selling, it triggers loan margin call,
when share fell below certain prices, banks or lenders will be forced to start selling company's asset to recover there money, doesn't matter even if you are paying installment on time... Tht was the goal of Kolkata short sellers when they want to destroy companies..
Not only that share floating ratio is trimmed automatically by SEC ..means company can no longer print more stocks to raise funds from market. This destroy there ability to raise capital which they may need for capex and opex operations..
Example , when this was happening, if Reliance was working on refinery project and need to pay 1B dollar for factory parts delivery, if stock price is high, they can print few more stock, raise 1B from market and pay the bill. But they cannot do same, if stock price is down...thereby they will fail to pay for spare parts. And refinery project might get delayed by years or terminate.
