You guys know that GPS only works in two dimensions. So if you were falling, it would still measure 0 mp/h
Ya, I'm pretty sure this thing was only measuring movement on one plane. They have to test it by dropping it from a high distance and seeing what a straight downward fall measures as. The speed readouts were completely arbitrary as soon as the instrument stopped measuring along the horizontal plane.
The speed recorded during vertical travel on the ramps is inaccurate due to the method of measuring distance traveled horizontally using gps.. 🔥

GPS can definitely see elevation so it should be able to calculate it accurately as long as the GPS is set up for it
Exactly. The gps will include elevation change in the eqation when calculating your speed. Basically adds the elevation change as extra distance.@@burrbrewer4313

Seems to me it’s too small a distance traveled for gps to be accurate. I wonder.

With the vert ramp, you're decelerating as you go up. And when you get air, you eventually reach a speed of 0 at your highest point. Then, your free fall back down is 9.8 m/s2 (ie. gravitational pull of Earth)...which is 21.92mph. The higher you jump, the more you're going to accelerate on the way back down. So, really, Gabe's fear is 100% justified. You're going the fastest when you fall. 😂
But this thing is only measuring horizontal speed not vertical. I think?
@@bobert_bobert Yes, that's probably true as well. I would THINK that's why the numbers were all over the place on the vert ramp. If it's only receiving data along a horizontal plane, it's probably only picking up bits and pieces.
Makes me wonder what it would do if they tried to see who could climb a ladder the fastest. It might be way less accurate when elevation changes are involved.

I feel like maybe the trackers aren't calibrated for the up and down motions of the vert...idk
yeah since theyre using gps theyre not going to be that great at such short distances.
I don't know exactly how those devices work but if I had to guess they use the satellite to triangulate position but i think they can only measure speed horizontally which would explain why the vert ramp speed seemed off. You can just calculate how fast he should be going. 15' freefall is about 20mph 20' freefall is about 25 mph so I would guess about those speeds at the transition.
Mesuring velocity with a satellite sensor on an inclined surface like vertical I suppose it will mess a bit with the actual speed instead of speed from point a to b...

on of the craziest sk8 daze of my life... my cousin and I were going downhill with another friend in a trans am following us, like 15 feet or so behind us... said his speedometer hit 40mph. If we would of bailed or wobbled out it could of been horrific. Funtimes! :P

Dang no one told gabe to run like he's running away from dropping in on the vert ramp he could have set the high score or maybe even gone faster than Bolt.
The vert ramp speeds were way off. You can use a freefall calculator to get the speed of an object when it falls from a given height. I forget the exact height of the braile ramp, but an 11.5' drop gets you 18.5mph, his high airs were at least a 15' drop which would be over 21 mph.

What’s with the inconsistent schedule? You can always upload beforehand for a scheduled time.
Dan had trouble exporting and we missed the upload window. We try to edit ahead of time, but often, we get the video from the editor the morning of the upload. It is an imperfect system and we always try to film a bunch ahead of time and "get ahead" but we never seem to get more than a day in advance
The ramps and braille ground are way smoother than outside. Way less resistance for rolling. It's simple

Scientifically, it makes sense to me. You are mobbing the fastest right when you pump after dropping in. If you do an air like JD was doing, at the peak of the air you almost stop moving entirely for a second. Thus his top speed would only be from when he dropped in. The 50-50 was faster because he wasn’t airing and reaching a peak where movement slowed. He was propelled by the coping and went faster. Skate science is crazy. Crazy.

If your measuring speed via GPS it’s only measuring horizontal speed. Not vertical. I think. Am I wrong?
Is it average speed or top speed? On vert you are coming to a complete stop on each side. So it makes sense the drop in from the 8ft and then pumping on ramps to wallride would be fastest.

drop-in was faster cuz they kick off the wall like a swimmer, jd got a mini speed wobble from it... on the vert you cant do that, so its only gravity fed which is 32ft/s2, at a fall of 20 feet high youre going ~20ft/s which is 13.6mph
try this at a snake track, the humps and rhythm are the speed
What about a long board with 70mm plus wheels
if this is GPS based no vert wil ever register correctly. It olny registeredthe time JD traveled from oneside to another. When he wentthrough all the braille warehouse, he could there actually was somedistance to pass, plus the pump of the ramp. Anyway GPS based stuff cannot measure "up" or "down"

To air is to reach 0mph and accelerate in the opposite direction. To grind is to keep forwards momentum
What I took from this video.... This was another time that Gabe could have thrown on a helmet and some pads and do some sliding on the vert ramp... to see how fast you slide of course.

A radar gun would be better for measuring speed at those short distances. That many gps units seems overkill for what they are doing.

Surprised they aren't using an accelerometer instead of GPS... those are so much more accurate for things like this especially in quick elevation changes and being indoors.
