Oh man that Eisenhower speech is sad, imagine a politician outright saying he represents the people nowadays. Strait up taboo, big donors would have him taken out asap

Fascinating content! I was especially intrigued by the segment regarding beatniks. I guess I’m a square because I agree that they ruined society in many ways.

“The Republican Party brings people together” 😭

The Republican Party was the initiator of all the anti-discrimination legislation of the period covered here and prior and subsequent; not only did the major-scale civil rights acts face their severest opposition from Democrats, but the margins of passage or failure were in Democrat hands & some of the civil rights bills WERE thus defeated; worse, Democrat Truman's initiatives after the war were not only axle-broke by Congresssional Dems, but segregationist Dems organized a convention in 1948, nominated segregationist senator Strom Thurmond for PRESIDENT and, fighting their own party, very nearly stopped Harry Truman's election.
These are facts, and this is history. I am an historian, and often speak or write both for AND against historic figures or situations. But the fact is not only that the Democrat Party was locus of what's seen now as really unsavory stuff, maybe because its long hold on power (Federal power especially) had made it the likely roost for ANY politician on the make: odds skewing odds. Skewing odds to such a degree that from the mid-1930s to the mid-nineteen-NINETIES Democrats held the majority in BOTH U.S. houses for all but TWO Congresses, 1949-51 and 1953-55. Repuiblicans DID NOT HAVE THE POWER to enact stuff; anything that came from the GOP by sheer math HAD to have Dems on board; anything Dems supported, from 1935 to 1995 except for the four years noted, would pass.
The Truman bills? Interesting: Truman, FDR's successor (1945) proposed desegregation in his first couple of years, when his own party controlled the House AND Senate. He was stiff-armed, and chose as a tactic after the GOP took House and Senate in the '46 elections, to triangulate: flushing out his party, he hoped.
The final results were uneven, and as noted Truman's election in 1948 was chancy because of the baddies in his party.
For the next near-half-century, Republicans would hold majorities in Congress just once more: two years, 1953-55, then the wilderness. It was to DEMOCRAT majorities REPUBLICAN Eisenhower sent the sweeping 1957 Civil Rights Bills, and Ike duplicated Truman's strategy from a decade before to get the '57 legislation passed. The nays were mostly, in many cases only, Democrats.
Beyond the period of the audio here, the 1960s and 1970s civil rights bills ALSO were put over by Republicans voting for, and most if not all againsts coming from Democrats.
Repeat: only Democrats had the numbers.
I did not mention, in speaking of myself, i'm a "politician" myself: i served 6 years in local office, AS A DEMOCRAT.
In recent years, i changed my registration to Non-Partisan, for many reasons. But i am not a Republican Party member; i replied to your jape at the length i did because many people believe in caricatures pushed by unobjective advocates; in the scenes i spoke of here, the caricatures are not only untrue & documents of the times verify such, but the caricatures were numerically impossible.
Hang on somebody what they do; do not charge to them the deeds of others.

@@angelsaltamontes7336 the bigger question is--why have both parties become what they currently appear to be? It seems as though there's a definite degradation in society.
