I worked for a large grocery company and I did a lot of work with Conrail using them to haul piggy backs from Ohio to near Boston. I got two invitations to ride this train. One was from Boston to Springfield and back and the other was from Hartford Ct. to Stanford Ct. and back. On the first trip I was in the cab of 4021. Had to walk through both engines while we were in route. It was very loud.
Did anyone in those houses along the way notice this special train going by? Probably not. I wonder what it costs the railroad to operate an OCS like this? I presume it doesn't generate any revenue.
Amtrak has never earned a profit, it's consumed more than $50 billion in federal subsidies over five decades to 2024. It doesn't generate any revenue either.
