BBC One! We can have lots of fun!
NOTES:
- This video will not include EVERY single variant. I decided to add my favorite variants, including variants included in other logo histories on BBC One, because if I added every variant, then it would be unwatchable.
- The 4th logo shown in the BBC TV section had to be taken from a logo history from TR3X PR0DÚCTÍ0NS due to TVArk being down and not being able to find the footage anywhere else.
BBC's 100th Anniversary is coming up, so I decided to do a logo history on the main BBC channels (BBC One, Two, Three, and Four). These are also in memoriam of the Queen.
BBC One is a British free-to-air public broadcast television network from London, and is owned and operated by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). Launched on 2nd November 1936 (as BBC Television Service from 1936 to 1960), it is the corporation's flagship network and is known for broadcasting mainstream programming, which includes BBC News television bulletins, primetime drama, entertainment, and BBC Sport events.
Memorable shows that aired on BBC One include: Doctor Who, The Magic Roundabout, EastEnders, and The Weakest Link.
My next logo history will be on BBC Two.
This video was released for educational purposes only.

As an American I love the calm and slightly snarky announcers.

@@IDKTECHSPERTSWell then, how do you explain BBC America?
The ones with the balloon are the ones I remember most and I'm most nostalgic for.
Those are the best idents from BBC One in my opinion.
I remember those early 2000s ? I was age 7 to 9 then . Be nice to have the years printed thi of broadcast
I only remember 2022
Maybe the Russian NTV took this idea in 2003 from BBC, but the balloon was green
I seen it on TV before it aired on PBS local stations : British Comedies on Saturday Nights including "Keeping Up Appearances" and "As Times Go By", right here on THIRTEEN PBS. : )
I was actually out of the country for the pandemic, and this is the first time I'm seeing the idents from that time. It's interesting how much the tone and purpose of these idents shifted towards being a force of consistency and comfort for people.
So crazy when you saw the title said "BBC 1 COLOUR" but there's still no colour
Hi everyone. Just want to say thanks for the support over the last 2 weeks. It's very interesting to see some people commenting on which idents they grew up with, and other things, and it's nice to see some Gen X hanging about. I've been interested in logos and idents ever since I was about 8, and I still love digging into idents at the age of 15.

@JontyMaster Wheres the blobs
The 97-02 indents were very high quality with some time being spent with the Music being calming and inviting with keeping the globe for the last time around. These ones were great and the bbc with this new logo was a turning point for them. As an american these are very calm with most US networks wanting to rush indents due to advertisers. Well done overall.
The balloon idents are far and away the best set BBC 1 will ever have!
I was lucky enough to have a long telephone conversation with Martin Lambie Nairn back in 2005 as part of my graphic design degree dissertation. His company designed the BBC news identities from the mid 1990s, along with the BBC TV idents from 1997 including the famous '2', the hot air balloons and the main box BBC logo used from then. Fascinating man.
That's awesome! You are one lucky man! His company did indeed design the BBC 2 idents from the 1990s! The hot air balloon idents are my favorites from BBC One. Thanks for watching.
What sort of things did he say? Love his ideas
@@JontyMaster It was about an hour long phonecall, and he also arranged for a copy of his book to be sent to me (I had previously seen it offered on eBay for over £300 - 17 years ago!!
He was very humble about his achievements, and a sad loss to COVID recently.
@@gaelenski_ He was much about the way the BBC had no real 'corporate identity' when he was approached to design the idents for the news bulletins, and he managed to persuade the top management from that time that the whole corporation needed a unifying identity - which he then was asked to do.
@@JontyMaster It was a long time ago that we spoke, but I remember him saying the BBC 2 character was his favourite. He was also very proud of the Castle Urquhart balloon scene. I think I still have a transcript of the conversation somewhere.
I was amazed when he agreed to speak to me, but it just shows, if you ask, the answer MIGHT be yes!
I like how you included the closing variants from two of my favourite BBC programmes, “Doctor Who” (1963) and “The Magic Roundabout” (1965)
Reflecting the pandemic era with separated and isolated clips was quite touching, I'm glad they brought back the circle in the most recent iteration tho
26:08 OMG THIS ONE IS SO NOSTALGIC!!!
FR THE MUSIC ALONE NEARLY BOUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES WTF
This was amazing. I absolutely love the Christmas ones. Wow. So great. Thanks for this
So glad you enjoyed! I also like the Christmas ones because of their creativity.
@@JontyMaster Yes extremely creative I must say.
Wow! The amount of work, time and clips this would have taken! This is truly fantastic I love it
Thanks for the support!

That was yet another amazing logo history. Really love this.
i swear i see you everywhere
I miss the BBC1 Balloon Idents 1997-2002 and BBC1 Circles Idents RIP😭😢😥🥺😿
Circle indents were so underrated, especially the ocean and lawn mower one
The ident from Christmas Day 1991 will always be my favourite. The Batman emblem was used in the clouds on the moon and it was such a faithful representation by the graphics team that never left me. It was so well done at the time and loved how it gave you the feel before the 1989 film began. A great history of logo designs and ideas; thank you for uploading these. 🌟
Glad you enjoyed it, mate. I quite like that Ident too. Very beautiful.
I love the cat one where they are all napping.
Same.
@@JontyMaster I bet one is cuddling up with another kitty.
nice logo history, cant wait to see more
I didn't know BBC was that old! Now from today BBC is 100!
in terms if you count the early days, if we only do modern BBC only then the 100-year anniversary won't come until 2036
I actually didnt know that ans sorry if im 5 months late,
Happy 100th Anniversary BBC 🇬🇧📺
This is awesome! Even the 12th (and 13th logos) are nostalgic for me.
Because, I was born in 2007. Good video!

It sure was! It takes days of research and clip finding to create a logo history. Thank you.
20:25 AYO THE TWO FROM BBC2-

😂🎉
The life on Mars one from 2006/07 went straight into a skit about Gene Hunt “kicking in a nonce” 😂😂
Wow. BBC is the oldest Broadcasting company in the world. And this is first channel! Happy 100th birthday 🎂🎉
BBC television is only 86 as of 2/11/22. The oldest broadcasting company in the world is CBS in the US, which first launched as radio station KQW in 1909.
@@munehaus CBS was founded in 1927, five years after the BBC.
@krashd NBC was the oldest. 1926 to be exact was when it was founded
All of them done brilliantly. The globe from the sixties on are my memories.
The globes are very interesting. And the process of the ident is interesting too.
0:35 First known BBC glitch and certainly not the last!
LOL yes indeed. BBC had one too many Monster Energy.
Good Afternoon at 0:35
20:13 Got me lol
nice video edit. brings back memories....
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this! All these years I thought I imagined the One Balloon floating through on the backdrop of Walking with Dinosaurs! My late mother thought it was ridiculous. “What’s an air balloon doing there? They hadn’t even invented it yet!” She struggled with the concept of branding! 😂
Thanks for the memories 😀
No problem, mate. The CGI in the Walking with Dinosaurs series is rather impressive for 1999. The series budget was 6.1 million pounds!
Love it took a while for colour to come after the in colour and it just blue for a lot of them.
Awesome man.
Thank you!
great video Jonty my favorite was 2002 ident also happy 100 years bbc :) :) :)
I think the 2002 idents were nice, especially the tap dancing boys and the haka.
2:40 This theme shows up in the third episode of Spaced
Another awesome video jonty can't wait for the next one
Thanks again!
12:28 forgot the BBC1 1985-1991 logo (I was hearing when Simon parody starts, which is in Saturday night live with Macaulay Culkin)
2:27 Clock used to announce for the ESC (Eurovision Song Contest) 1963

20:15 a police balloon, that's something you don't see every day
Man That Stream was good!

And now BBC One hurtles through space and time. Come with us for the trip of a lifetime. Aliens you have been warned. Christopher Eccleston is the new, Doctor Who!
Great compilation, but some of those early Christmas idents were the stuff of nightmares! Ever see the Monkey Dust take on the early 00's idents?
Never seen those. And yeah some of the Christmas idents can creep some people out, but the one which I think is the creepy one would be the two faced santa ident from 1978.
fascinating. Please do the BBC two logo history next
I actually did one on BBC Two not long ago.

I also adore UK television idents, especially the BBC idents and the regional idents from ITV (Granada, Yorkshire, etc). Thanks for the kind comments.

_Happy 100th anniversary, BBC!_
Excellent evolution of idents from BBC Television and BBC One, Jonty!
BBC! The greatest television channel in the UK since 1922! Some of their greatest shows include Doctor Who, and some of their children's shows like Teletubbies (1997)!
The most memorable idents from BBC One are the globe idents from the 1960s until 2002. Some of my favourite idents from BBC One would be:
- the 1966 ident (the one with the logo that looks like a stopwatch)
- the 1969 ident (colour)
- the 1986 ident (the one with the computer-generated globe)
- the 1991 ident (also known as "The Virtual Globe")
- the 1997 "balloon' idents (probably the best idents from BBC One)
- the 2002 ident (also known as "Rhythm and Movement")
- the 2006-2016 idents
- the Christmas idents from 2021 (34:43)
However, if I had my least favourite idents from BBC One, then it would be the Oneness idents of 2017 (the given reason is: lack of creativity). At least the Rhythm & Movement idents are better than the Oneness idents. The 2022 idents are a huge improvement over the Oneness idents.
And last, _rest in peace to HM Queen Elizabeth II. Gone, but definitely not forgotten._
Thanks, Man, and yes, happy 100th anniversary to the British Broadcasting Corporation.
There are a lot of classic shows on the BBC. Some more shows include Monty Python's Flying Circus, Casualty, Top of the Pops, Pointless, The Magic Roundabout, and EastEnders.
I agree with your picks. The globe idents are fascinating. The concept might be simple, but it took hard work to create the mechanical globes. The 1985 ident is a great introduction to CGI in the BBC One industry. The 1997 ident is probably my favorite also. I'd love to go riding in that balloon.
Unfortunately, I would have to disagree. There isn't really a lack of creativity in the Oneness idents. Sure, some might be awkward (for example The old Swimmers variant), but there are some which are very upbeat (for example Excercise class and Steel Pan Band). The 2022 idents are great and have beautiful scenery.
And yes, rest in peace to HM Queen Elizabeth II. Gone, but definitely NOT forgotten indeed. Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for my logo history on BBC Two.
BBC Television first launched in 1936.
@@munehaus Yes, but he was not recognising the birthday of BBC Television.
0:16 Where did you find this logo?
This: czcams.com/video/zKlkyZE8XH8/video.html
4:31 well there goes the secret😅
I'm currently at uni and my lecturer who worked on and off for the bbc in the 80 and 90s, was once given the task of delivering the new (at the time) collection of logs/ transitions. He said that they where stored on Laser Disc to transport them they where 4 disks made one for each area the BBC covered. Each disc cost 30K.
Also i think you missed some from 2018.
That's interesting. Thanks for sharing. Also, I decided NOT to add every single ident because then the video would be way too long and some viewers might go to sleep.

Umm Jonty? I have a correction.
For BBC TV service, the first logo's date should be (1936-1939, 1946-1953). Because BBC shut down in 1939 due to WWII. It returned in 1946.

I like the part where BBC goes from Radio to Television. : )
Watching the 1960-1963 ident where they say "This is BBC television", they pronounce the word "television" the same way as the Queen pronounced it in Her 1957 Christmas speech, the first to be televised. I think that now the British pronunciation of that word has changed.

After all these years 1985s cow ident still reigns supreme.
It's funny how BBC2 has managed to have the same superb and iconic logos for 30 years, yet BBC1 has had loads and never succeeded with any. The balloons came close, but they were very short lived and never indicated "1" in the way the "2" logos do. Some text at the bottom of the screen over some random image can never work, as it's not directly associated with what's on screen or even the channel number on the TV itself.
Damn, it's already been a century of that company...

Never heard about it.
@@JontyMaster ah ok, wait til November
uh are you talking about ITV?
You mean ITV? I heard from Adam Martyn that ITV 1 is coming back.
@@JontyMaster yes
what is the difference between 15th and 16th logo?
To be fair, I should have called them idents. There isn't a difference between the actual corporate logos, but the concept of the idents has a difference. My most recent logo histories starting from my take on NBC have used the term "ident" for the TV networks instead of "Logo".
But as a Doctor Who fan, i'd enjoyed the Classic and series! (If id have Max, then id would've watched the series)
6:56 is cool
Watch the early ones and you can see what people meant when they talked about the "BBC Voice."
Interesting, how the vowels of the presenters begin to slide from about the mid-1980s. And now, we are firmly stuck with Duncan Middlemarsh, who likes to pronounce the channel as “Baybursurgh Wun” 😬😬
LOL!
