DIY Barrel Raft River Trip Camping On Boat

- Crazy neighbour and I set out on the homemade camping pontoon boat for a couple days up river and back down again to where we launched from. Built it out of 8 55 gallon rain drums, plywood and lumber. We have a removable tent set up so we can camp right on the boat! Nice little heater and a place to cook meals. Was a great adventure with lots of hunkering down.
For any questions about why we're not fishing, the river isn't recommended for fish consumption due to natural mercury content.

Rest in peace Glenn! Thank you for taking us with you on this journey! We will miss you!
I love how crazy neighbour, doesn't say anything, he just gives the world a big hug, every once in a while.
An absolutely loveable character in this world ♡♡ xoxo
27:15 + 27:30 the only times he talks
That is until he gets liquored up a little then he becomes a Chatty Cathy lol you can really see it on some of the live streams, he really comes out of his shell there
Think he said ya were fucked if u listen love these guys keeping it 💯 whatever they do
He spoke the second night eating dinner
I appreciate the fact that Steve keeps his show family friendly.
That is almost impossible to find
these days. The whole family enjoys the show even Grandma❤️
These videos make me want to disconnect from all my apps, media noise, hamster wheel of nonsense and get back to the basics, really wake up and smell the coffee of what's important in life and keep things simple.
There is something really authentic, tender and fragile about this guy. Almost a child like innocence. Mixed with a bit of a mid life crisis and hopelessness. If that is true, I can really relate. I like this guy. Really cool vids. Thank you
Kee-pyor Myndopen
There's a real humility and lack of pretense (no B.S.) to the dude that I really appreciate and relate to.
Hunkerin' down with quiet desperation.
I feel like that may be how he used to be. Possibly homeless, broke or just that's how it is in some rural parts of Canada. But now he's learned how to have adventures on as little of a budget as necessary.
@R.L. Dane
Well said
@Ryan Hill
Ah gotcha. That’s some good insight. Thank you
The profound comatose state I get in when I'm lying in bed watching these videos is quite warming.
Quality content man
Totally agree brother
relatable mate
Yeah I can't watch TV anymore. You tube has been my TV more than a few years now.
Steve's videos are my favourite to watch before bed, Then I put on a rain playlist on spotify and pretend I'm camping by a lake hahah
100%
This is the type of stuff that just makes you smile
I like coming back to these videos and reminisce on how you held me through some of the toughest times imaginable. Thanks Steve
Crazy neighbor is the best kind of camping partner - he does all the work and never says shit. :)
My crazy neighbor does meth and yells at my house around midnight. I'm envious
sadly, we are the crazy neighbors with trap parties every night
Lol yupp Steve never does shit lol
I love how he occasionally looks at the camera and smiles really big with his arms up
@@ProfessionalCheater1 I came here to talk about that, I love it lol
“Don’t need to have a fire, but I like the crackle and the smell”
My man.... 👍👌🤙
It doesn’t seem like camping without a fire.
Elon Musk was just on Joe Rogan, and they talked about if, when we are AI cyborgs, will we still enjoy campfires. (IMO,If we don't, we aren't people any more.)

You know, Steve... In a world of crazy, your videos remind me of how good life can be. Thank you for providing the world a little bit of peace.
Quality content. I have trouble sleeping at night, especially with the way my brain won't shut up on its own before going to bed, thanks ADHD! Your videos really wind down my brain, and make sleeping a lot easier for me. The way you make it a point to clean up every sight you camp at really restores my faith in humanity. Keep up the good work, Steve
You film this as an honest and honorable man who just enjoys the pure nature around you. Thats why all your videos are amazing. Bloody well done, hunker down with great appreciation from me in the UK.
OMG you dont realise the pride im feeling realising that you have read my comment and gave it a like. you sir, have made my day. thank you and keep doing what you do, we love it.
ace geordie yep definite appreciation here too (oddly in the uk too! lol)
I love that you are clearly concerned about the possible difficulties you may face, but your zen-like acceptance for adventure wins the day. You're a great guy. Glad that you're making it happen
@Triple M a guitar and comfortable place to sit! But either sounds like a good time to me.
Everything’s gonna be juuuust fine
Crazy how far youve come and how much you've been through, hope you're doing well bud.
I love how you camp and adventures like a real person... not one with the latest greatest high tech set up and gear. Thanks for that👍
Pop
That is the coolest pontoon boat I've ever seen
People seem to forget if you're just going for a day in average climate, all you really NEED is water proper clothing and some sort of medkit. I like to have two days worth of food. I've stopped carrying a sleeping bag because it took up too much space, again depending on the climate, and replaced it with a basic non reflective thermal blanket.
Thank you Steve and also to your neighbour. Appreciative of the humour alongside. As usual always looking at what you have for your meals lol.
All good. Bless you both (Also to your beautiful lady🙋♀️
"Zip-tie to the rescue!"
*one cut later*
"So we have no Zip-ties"
Rule 1 of being on the water: If you have it you won't need it
ThatBugBehindYou yeah, that was a pretty sad moment. I thought to myself zip ties can do just about anything, I’ve even used them in place of broken springs for belt tensioners so I can’t with to see how he uses one on this boat engine. Then no zip tie bro. 😢
@@NitroGuyJH they work as tourniquets
that one gay furry lol. They certainly possess a multitude of uses.
Moogie B he sure will. Lol
Yo boss ditch the eggs in a box and just clean a Gatorade bottle out real good and fill it with the eggs you like can even throw cheese and butter in and have a super quick and easy scrable any time any place. Love this raft, keep on keepin on brother
Grate idea man
i woudnt cook with hdpe stuff(plastic bottles). tests have shown they release cancer causing substances when frozen or super heated.
@@frigglebiscuit7484 yummy, cancer!!
@@frigglebiscuit7484 - I'm thinking that he means as far as a place to hold the scrambled eggs until it's cooked, not cooking it in a plastic Gatorade bottle
@@frigglebiscuit7484 Lol, no one is cooking down the Gatorade bottle. These bottle are actually PET, poly ethylene terephthalate. Freeze all your food in boiling bags. Or just cut to the chase and thrive well on MREs.
Hey Steve...Love the humbleness and humility in your videos! Only on my 4th one, but loving the homemade river rafting and stealth camping I have seen so Far! Now 61 yrs old, I was a scout leader in Pennsylvania for 18 yrs and had my fair share of great experiences and learning experiences in the outdoors. To comment on river rocks and fire rings... YES, they do make noise, crack and twice (only under larger, hotter fires) had some of the rocks explode. Very scary learning experience! Please continue these enjoyable videos and ignore the naysayers.
ps survived broken neck, throat and neck cancer and still camping 4 Seasons...just not with 15 teenagers anymore!

You are a swell guy. Keep up the good work.👌🏻
I really like going on your adventures with you Steve, they're addictive.
Just wanted to say..I love the fact that you took the time to pick up trash that someone else left behind! I'm now a new subscriber!
That's what we're supposed to do...enjoy and leave as is...exactly why I like him too..
Well, there went 35 minutes, didn't even notice. I was all hunkered down and shit! Haha. Thank you Steve for the good vibes.
24:44 , the sounds of a thousand wailing spirits crying for the souls of the damned, 24:49 "Nice and cozy inside the shack."
Ha ha ha! Thought that was just me.
Coyotes sure are noisy!
I've heard that too.. Sound scary cause I've never been at the river or forest for a camping..
I've got coyotes in my back yard. They dont sound like those guys
time to hit the ol dusty trail.
I stumbled upon your videos and I'm not sure how, but they're fantastic and show a perfect example of how you can still be environmentally conscious, enthused about nature and natural living, and also not be needlessly afraid of technology all at the same time. I love this channel, thanks!
You have a great life. I was dieing uptil I got my new kidney transplant. And having seen life from that possible side of death, the little things, like camping on a raft is so priceless and. Presciously
eng yeh should try Amal
Crazy neighbor is so helpful.... I wish I had someone like him living close by. Enjoy your video.
So calm repairing that engine with “tape” in that friggin current......love this guy!
I love seeing the struggle. Thats why you have so many American viewers. You dont cut the struggle. Anyone who's done any real-life survival has learned to embrace the suck. Like starting a fire with a ferro rod during a week of thunderstorms. Getting comfortable looking pathetic and then striving is real.
Yes indeed, Learning to be comfortable outside your comfort zone is where true freedom begins 😁
To drink alcohol on a vessel you need to have eyepatch, hook for a hand and club foot. Parrot is optional. Only other option is knowing most of sea shanties and will to plunder and sink any other vessel that comes by.
Why do I find your videos so interesting? Two reasons. 1. Your camping adventures are out of the ordinary. You just don't go to a park and set up a tent. 2. I can camp vicariously through your videos. I am glad I subscribed!
I’ve been day hiking with hammocking for a few hours as my end reward. You make me want to explore farther! Thank you for that.
I adore your videos, they relieve the depression and stress in my life. I wish I’d gone camping as a child with my Dad, but instead I was abused by my Dad, and I’m 43 and still never been camping.
Oh well, at least I have your beautiful videos to watch ❤️
Thank you.
Go camping, even if it is at a local campground!
I've seen exploding river rocks. In the early '80s I was living in Inuvik NWT. Two friends and I flew in to a place called twin lakes for a 4 day fishing trip. The first night there we had a fire on the beach and as the fire grew hot, rocks began to explode and pieces flew past our heads. The rocks that exploded were smaller sedimentary ones that were actually under the fire, not the larger ones used to form the ring. This type of rock is somewhat porous and because of the nature of their formation, when the trapped water boils they easily fracture along their layers, sending pieces flying. It didn't happen after that because we used the same fire pit and all the "exploding" rocks had already exploded. A good practice wouldn't be to clear your fire pit of all rocks down to sand or gravel if you are building a fire on what could possibly be sedimentary rocks. Cheers.
just cant replace first hand knowledge like this. Cheers for sharing it with us!
Been waiting for this man huge fan
So close to hitting 100k I hope it happens soon you deserve it
BIG FACTS DUDE!!

Absolutely love your videos Steve, Stumbled across it somehow from over here in the UK.
love your videos. all the things I think of doing you do. I suffer from severe anxiety and your videos help me get through episodes
Be well, brother.
Same
They are extremely calming
Steve, the first time I saw one of your videos I laughed because it just seemed silly to sleep out in the green patch in your town. As I watch your show more often, I think you are a genuinely awesome guy. You're adventurous and handle issues that come up with a calm demeanor and a cool head. Frankly, it's inspiring to others.
Instead of pulling the tarp off, should roll it up and secure it to the aft crossover support. Then you can see more while moving, and then just untie and unroll it. Just a thought.
It's great to see someone who works hard succeeding in this world,u deserve every contribution u get. Thanks for giving me so much entertainment.
These boat trips are my absolute favorite videos on CZcams!
That was a fun Steve.
Thank's for bringing me along on that journey.
Cheers to "Crazy Neighbor" for being there.
There is something about your voice and the respect you show to rules and regulations and laws. That just commands respect.
I love to party when I can. But am also always conscious of consequences of actions. You teach me a lot. I love the Apps you showed. Keep on, Keeping on Bro.
I absolutely love these adventures and this boat build is awesome.
I get so excited for new projects watching people like you steve thanks for the good ideas and keep it up
It is great how you show all the speedbumps along the way. No candy coating on murphy's law. Keeps me thinking and planning for
my own adventures.
that river is really flowing

The fact that its 35 minutes over the typical 25 minutes just means I have more of CAMPING WITH STEVE material to watch!!!!
Awesome video brother keep it up. Cant wait for you to hit 100 K!!!!
Best one yet man! Usually I say to myself....self would you do this stuff? I say hell no but I can watch Steve do it! I do back pack and motorcycle camp so I guess I'm just as crazy as you. Thanks for the video.
I have a scar on my neck from when I was about 12 years old, a river rock exploding out of a fire I had made down by the river, it is true for sure!! no liquor=no camping
river rocks always zero in on me too. I had one down my back as a kid.The crazy part happens next. My uncle had to lift me upsidedown by the legs to shake it out. True story.
If rocks are wet when used for a fur they can explode....ive seen it happen on the Suwannee river.... Same type of rock that was used to make arrowheads.
Wow, I would have thought that they'd crack. I've had plenty of different rocks crack on me but none explode.
Thanks so much! Myth prevails.
I want a "Crazy Neighbor" t-shirt man. We all have a crazy neighbor. And we all just might be the crazy neighbor. Depending on which neighbor's perspective.
Hey alien Crazy Neighbor here I want one too Steve and I are thinking of raffling off my hat for charity
@@crazyneighbour2429 It is a nice hat
I second the crazy neighbor shirts! @glen brown
My neighbours suck, I wish I had a crazy neighbour like that. He should feature more, be a star like Steve.
If you don't know who the crazy neighbor is, it may be you....
Steve, I love how genuine you are. Came originally for the urban camping videos, but this series following the boat has been great!
Thanks! More urban camping to come as well :)
@@campingwithsteve You saying that just made my day! Looking forwart to that :D
Steve, I wouldn't believe it myself, but river rocks do explode if you use them around a fire. A friend and I were camping near the Salmon river in Idaho using a pre-existing metal fire ring with grate and things started exploding in the fire. We couldn't figure out what it was until we started getting hit with hot rocks. Someone had put them in the bottom of the fire pit and that's what was exploding. I suspect it was a certain type of rock but it was pretty shocking and quite scary.
Hey Steve and crazy neighbour.wow awesome stuff you bring for us. I just start watching your videos much appreciate your hard work and bring great adventure. God bless you both. Take care guys. Much love from UK
He is very gentle and kind and extremely interesting person.
My wife and I love your videos, Steve! It's great how you keep it simple and roll with the punches. This is what outdoor adventure is all about! Keep it up!
Your pontoon raft thing is super inspirational. I want one.
Great to see some people having good time on the river.
Steve ive gotta say man i find myself waiting for thursdays lol best show brother thanks for the content.

Just got hooked on all these actual authentic videos. Such a nice break from all the other bullshit in the world. Keep up the good work Steve.
Thinking of you CN. These river trip videos are simply my favorite ones. Chill, fun, and ingenious. Love stealth camping, but these ones have a special place in my heart.
Your quick still shots of nature and the camp set up in all your videos are so well done and really emotive. 💚
Excellent raft shack! Sure is a beaut! Thanks for sharing and hope to see this craft in the future.
Adam & Katey
So jealous of the raft trip. My greatest desire is to engineer improvements to the raft while it's in dry dock in your yard. Adventure on a budget my friend...
Love the videos, Steve! I can confirm that river rocks can explode if used in a campfire. I've had it happen once, never even risked it again after that. It's really not fun having hot and sharp bits of rock exploding at the campsite.
crazy neighbor is the shit love his antics in the background
I came across this video on accident and I love how he's sooooo simple and just down to earth guy ... Nothing super expensive or over the top 100% a fan now !!!
22:43 Yes, I can confirm that rocks taken from wet areas will explode when heated in fire, and quite violently in fact. A friend and I learned this the hard way about 15 years ago when we were camping near a stream and thought it would be a cool idea to cook meat on a flat piece of sedimentary rock. After several minutes on the fire the rock suddenly, quite literally exploded, throwing sharp shards of stone in multiple directions as we hovered over the fire. It was LOUD, and we were both seriously lucky we weren't struck by any of the shards.
Sandstone (flat thin rocks) usually explode when placed in fire. Learned that in the scouts messing with other scouts.
fake and gay
snidthekid this has happened to me as well
@Human Centered I didn't, but probably shard've.
Boating with Steve. All the things with Steve!
Let me just say I really love this channel. When I need to get my mind off of shit this channel is really fun to watch and just kind of watch something random and relax. Thank you Steve.. 💚😊

Awesome videos, an idea for the getting beached problem. You could use both of the poles and the ropes, as a anchor system to keep you from drifting while also keep you from getting beached. If you angle the pole at each end of the raft, to the frame and into the rocks. While using the ropes how you already are and putting tension back towards the bank. Theoretically it should keep you in one spot. Not an engineer, just a problem solver!
The food parts are more epic than the camping. A little FYI, I've been sick for three days, CZcams marathoning this show. Very happy to have found this. I think the laughter helped loosen something up.
In the 90's, I camped many weekends on my 19.5 ft bass boat and it was really a good experience. I liked the way you built the frame for your tarp on your raft! I could have used that idea on my boat camping experiences! Thanks for the video!
Whoo, wasn't expecting an adventure tonight, thanks for sharin
This is so awesome! Camping on a barrel raft! It doesn't get much better than that!
I love how I go randomly on CZcams to watch stuff and the CZcams algorithm brings me here. I'm now 10 videos deep, I love your content and I've also subscribed. Bonus thumbs up for having videos in 4K I've watched youtubers with 10x more subs and they still do everything in 1080p. Keep up the good work man.
Raft Hunkering is a totally cool concept!!!
When you're trying to go against the current always stick to the shore line as there is way way less current there.
When anchoring for the night throw your anchor drift down until you're taught then motor to the shore line and tie off up stream, as the tide rises or drops you will stay in the same spot and not get beached.
North Saskatchewan River has far to many high spots to raft close to shore
Ive never boated but plan to one day. Thank you for the advice. It will be helpful.
@@keiths.9239 It`s a hoot alright !
I just stumbled across this video, and I've just watched the whole thing with a smile on my face. Love the attitude and outlook on life. Subscribed 👍
River rocks do explode sometimes. Years ago one of our boy scout leaders decided to show us how to heat up a can of baked beans on a flat rock over the fire. Fortunately no one was near the fire when it blew. But we never did find the can of beans.
Steve next time you tie to the bank throw out your grapple into river to keep you pulled off the bank as water goes up and down. Great vid!
Omg!!! It’s finally here!! #ivebeenwaiting :)
This is one of my favorites ones I've watched so far! Thank you Steve!
Lol, love that movie 🤙 snookims 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I live in Northern California but have camped all over the U.S. I have seen river rocks explode in the Mendocino National forest. I didn't know it was water content but that would explain it. Thanks for the adventures 😁

Did you feed crazy neighbor ! you know he’ll keep coming back if you feed him , lol great trip
Such an underrated channel. Some of my favorite content on CZcams. Thank you so much for the awesome videos. They bring me peace in my long nights of anxiety. time to hunker down.
Used to go on Ironman camping trips .. Blizzards, storms, all the worst weather.
All of us who went always want to do it again.
It makes you appreciate life.
looks fun. if liquor isn't available, there's always getting baked & eating a bunch of junk food. i prefer some nice talk radio when I'm in relax mode like this. hopefully crazy neighbor isn't so shy and converses when the camera is off. you're lucky to have a good friend to be a part time hobo with, I'm only 48 and 90% of my lifelong friends have passed away. Hard to make friends at this age for me as I've got trust issues and don't want to hang out with anyone who can't keep up or pay their own freight.
