  • The new adult category rose to popularity in the early 2010s...but was, unfortunately, short lived. You may have heard talk of this category floating around, but what is new adult, what happened to it, and why doesn't it exist anymore? New adult was a category between young adult and adult, meant to appeal to college-aged readers, but unfortunately died out just as it was gaining traction. In this video we'll talk about the unique history of this category, and most importantly, what to do if you want to publish a new adult book.

    There needs to be a ground-breaking, traditionally published series to resurrect the New Adult life. Does it have to be about college students? How about post college, where former students are crippled with loans? Or someone who avoided college altogether and became a story of triumph in the job market?

    The early NA books were about college age people who were setting out in the world without their parents and dealt with some issues facing more independent young adults (18 to 20 something).
    Then New adult was taken over by erotica authors. Anything containing sex scenes was shoved into NA.
    This was discussed on a couple writing forums.

    Really interesting. One of mine was going to be YA but for the plot to make sense, I changed the character's ages. Now it is Adult but it reads like more of a YA.

    There were precursors dealing with 20-somethings back in the ‘80s and ‘90s. See “Bright Lights, Big City” and “Microserfs”.

    Why do books of any genre have to fit into an age category, anyway?

    I am new to writing as a career change, new stage in my life. I am learning that there is a lot more about publishing a book than I ever imagined. For someone wanting to get their first book published, is it necessary to familiarize with all of this publishing terminology before seeking an agent? Will it ruin a person's chances of being taken seriously if they don't know their genre, style, crossover, and the other dozen or so new terms I've heard in the past month or so? I've been trying to watch as many videos on writing as possible, but sometimes I just want to write. Other than binge-watching your very helpful content, is there maybe a playlist or resource that you could point me to as the bare bones basics I would need to know to confidently 'pitch' my book?. (I just learned that word recently too)

    Why not just accept adult books are for all ages adult.

      Personally, I view adult fiction as a broad category. There are different stages of real-life adulthood, so I think the fictions' demographic subcategories should reflect that (without the 'new adult' label). Ironically, conventional "adult" fiction is more narrowly defined than what you see in the young adult category.

    Just now heard of this genre, but awfully close to Bildungsroman innit? Noticed it as an option for Kindle Vella authors. Might give it a try.

    Hmm, as a filmmaker, I find there isn't as much of a harsh divide. There are indie films and comedies that appeal to college aged kids. The 18-24 demo was all the rage in the 80s. There's less of a line in the sand.
    Though, one reason could be that "adult film" often means something ENTIRELY different.

    • @PinkNintendoDuo87
      @PinkNintendoDuo87 Před 3 lety

      Compared to books, categorizing a film's age demographic is much looser. However, I despise it when much of "adult" media is automatically labelled as porn.

    Not gonna lie, I'm really sick of YA having an expiry date on their MCs. I'm glad that the mindset is starting to shift... it just doesn't make sense to me that a book should cease to be appropriate for teens just because the MC is college aged. It is not uncommon in the slightest for teens to want to read a slightly older experience. It's extremely common in Middle Grade for MC's to be slightly older, young children's novels and shows have characters of all ages. It strikes me as weird that when you're a teen, suddenly the standard becomes "teen mc's only". It's cause so much damage when we got NA titles in the YA section just because the age of the MC was 16 to 18, but the content was totally adult.
    The age category should be more about content, and NOT about the age of the MC. If anything, we could use a YA split to upper and lower YA. We are starting to build a gap between Middle Grade and YA where 11-14 year olds are lacking content.
    In this sense, I don't think we need a NA category, because there isn't any content that a 28 year old can read that a 20 year old can't based on maturity. Rather, I think we need to better teach readers how navigate the adult fiction space and finally let these writers sit at the adult table. I think why many YA readees don't like "adult fiction" is because they are thinking about their dad's books, you know? A lot of white male authors from a specific time. YA is so much more diverse than we get in Adult Fiction, I don't think they've caught up to the times. And they're not going to if we keep insisting that these stories aren't "adult" enough to sit at the adult table. YA is predominantly female writers as well, and I don't think its coincidence that these female writers weren't getting shelved in adult fantasy or sci-fi... I think it's a subconscious bias that female and diverse authors are for "kids and romance only." We are finally seeing popular YA authors like Leigh Bardugo and Sarah J. Maas get adult releases, but many of their previous titles never should have been YA to begin with.

      I agree with your thoughts.
      I do want to add that the difference in age from 20-28 is significant for ability to understand certain themes and enjoy certain adult novel topics- at least it was for me!

    • @hhoi8225
      @hhoi8225 Před 4 lety +1

      That makes a lot of sense. I have an 8-year-old who reads well above grade level and has read a number of "classics," but it would wholly inappropriate for him to read most of what currently is considered YA. The difference lies in the content. Books which are considered adult have a wide range of content but I can find a lot more "clean" content there that I recognize versus trying to vett a bunch of YA stuff I've never read (and hope my preadolescent boy doesn't accidentally land in rapey elf-boner narratives).

    • @PinkNintendoDuo87
      @PinkNintendoDuo87 Před 3 lety +1

      It's ironic that content is more diversified when targeted towards younger audiences; not always the case for their more "mature" counterparts. How we define adult media (as a whole) can be very problematic.
