We’ve said it before on these pages and we’ll say it again: plug-in hybrids deserve more attention. For people who recognize the need to reduce emissions and appreciate great fuel efficiency but don’t feel ready to transition fully to EVs, plug-in hybrids (or PHEVs) offer the best of both worlds. They can also run exclusively on electric power-albeit for less distance than dedicated EVs, but enough to cover the typical daily commute-and there’s a gas engine in reserve to make it easier to drive long distances.
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime was one of the first plug-in hybrid SUVs from a mainstream brand when it landed back in 2021. Although there’s a new generation of RAV4 (and therefore, we expect, of RAV4 Prime) on the way within the next couple of years, today’s RAV4 Prime remains very competitive against the rivals that have emerged since its launch.

I absolutely adore the CVT system. Yeah, you need to get used to it a bit, but the seamless transfer of power without any, let's say, "bumps" during gear shifting is something I really like with the Hybrid Synergy Drive that Toyota has. My first and only Toyota so far has been a 2016. Auris 1.8 L hybrid with HSD. 7 years later, the car has 220 thousand km and still works like on the 1st day I got it.

We got an XSE Prime about two months ago and love it! Bern holding steady at 40 to 42 mpg in hybrid mode only, with the car computer consistently within 2 mpg of my calcs (car showing 42 to 43 mpg)….not bad.

The proven reliable Toyota eCVT transmission that it shares with Highlander and Sienna Hybrids is a weakness?!?!? You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, AT ALL. As for price, in 2024, cars are expensive, especially when they are designed in Japan and built in the best automotive factories in the world. At $50K USD including tax and tags, and title, its a marvel of modern engineering. Do you think they should make it cheaper to sell it for a few thousand less?

I really like this vehicle, but boy is it's pricey, and there's still very long wait times.

Question, will the Prime battery charge on a cycling 120v plug? Many hotels in Canada offer plug ins for their customers but they cycle on and off every couple of seconds to conserve power and demand. Anyone know?

The Rav4 will charge on 120v but it takes 12 hours for a complete charge

@@marktoymeister151 Not quite what I mean Mark. The power alternates off and on every few seconds. I assume that the 120v charging equipment may not like that. But it would be convenient if you could just plug in outside your hotel room and wake up fully charged in more ways than one.. Thanks for the comment.
