A great idea that I heard and just put into action is that after the third mission, phandalin's villagers were so grateful with the party that they decided to rebuild the destroyed home on the hill and give it to the party, making it their new home, I even asked the players to decide how they want to have their room
Oh great idea. Always cool to give the PCs a home base for a lot of reason. Don't know if you know this already but that is Tresendar Manor, it features in Lost Mine of Phandelver
Cool, that's going in the book
I'm about to start my first session this Saturday as a DM, I'm excited! Hopefully I can do it right. This video helped me a lot!
Happy to be of help but you got this!
I’m running DIP starting next week for a DnD club of 11 year olds - my grandson and his friends. We have completed Dragons of Stormwreck Isle which they loved. Took us 6 sessions with some additional encounters. Thanks for the vid
Oh that sounds awesome, happy to help!
I first DM’d for my son with edition 2. Having to dredge up my memories. It is fantastic to have a way to engage and relate to an energetic creative group of adventurers. Seems to make me a cool Nana.
You gotta be the coolest Nana running D&D for them. Legendary
thank you, gonna be a dm for the first time, and none of us ever played dnd before. You make DoIP seems fun so thats where we are playing first. thank you
Oh fantastic, hope you all have a great time. Don't be afraid to make it your own, there's a lot of room to adjust in DOIP so it's hard to screw things up
Can't wait to see the next one!
Yeah buddy, I've got a couple lined up in the production queue and I'm feeling really good about this series already
I started with D&D in ‘79, but I’m just about to run this as my first 5E game for new players. This seems like it’s well set up for noobs (or old guys out of practice).
I love to hear it, I bet you all have a lot of fun with this one
Love your content! About to run LMoP, but can’t help get inspired for what the adventures may find ahead!
Awesome, I love it! It's great to plant little bread crumbs for the next thing (it's also great to have a plan B) and LMoP and DOIP are a perfect pairing. Especially with a new Phandalin adventure on the way!
This channel is criminally underrated. Amazing work my friend.
Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say
Thank you! I'm about to DM for my son for the first time.
Oh awesome, enjoy it!
Yeaaahhh! This is gonn' be good!
Buckle up!
Great video
Thanks!
Thankyou for this, Im going to be DMing for my Uncle and cousins. With any luck I'm hoping that this is the start of a Saturday game night at his house. Especially since my local game shop, that I had allot of fun at shut down recently.
I'm glad you'll be running this but I'm sorry about your local game store. Anyone else nearby?
@@RdotDoyle Yes, a new one opened up, but they want $10 a head for dnd Wednesday. But dont worry I have since found a nice online group.
@@Lueibarkall Ah sweet. That is a little more than my FLGS charges but still a cheap night out right? We'll be in there for four hours (or more some nights) and it's cheaper than a movie ticket. The snacks and drinks are cheaper too lol
Let’s gooo I already feel inspired
Awesome, lots of room to make this one your own too
@@RdotDoyle yah I like how much you can just adjust and the story still works
Finally!
Here we go!
This is kind of a basic question but I don't think that was covered in the essentials set:
Should I go with the theater of mind for all encounters? There are maps for the different quests in the book but they are tiny!!!
I don't have any issues with theater of mind as a concept but I might play with some people that are not familiar with dnd at all...
I was thinking maybe I can keep a mental image of their positions or maybe have a mini map behind my screen to keep track maybe?
I love theater of the mind but ultimately almost never use it because players want to know exactly where they are in 5E to the five foot square. I use an old school erasable vinyl grid map in person and upload maps to owlbear rodeo online
So I made Phandalin a major interest with the harper guild which made the players a guild mission to protect
Nice, I think Harpers are your best bet if you are going with the Forgotten Realms factions
"it speaks two languages, which is better than a lot of us Americans" has me rolling :D
Ha! Thanks
What kind of preparation is necessary? We are brand new and have just had a session -1 where we just opened up the box and created some basic characters in which we plan to expand on. I am the Dungeon Master and I am currently making my way through the rulebook and plan to also read through the adventure book as well but what is actually needed? do I plan some encounters or just have ideas for what they might come across along the road? I am keen on setting interesting scenes and introducing them to a world that they do not feel alone in, however, if i create an npc to meet at an inn, how do I know if it fits in with the expectations/limits of the game? I don't want to accidentally be selling gear I shouldn't be or anything along those lines
Everyone's got a different level of prep that's right for them and it will evolve as you go. A lot of that type of understanding comes with time, and even with years of experience under my belt I often find it's better to spend my time and energy embellishing existing content. Especially as you are just starting out I would stick with what is in the adventure and put your creative energy into making those scenes more interesting. If you want to insert an NPC on the road or the tavern, have it be one of the relevant NPCs to the story line so when they come up later there will be that recognition. 5E is definitely easy to break by handing out too many magic items so be careful with that. If you really want to add things better to make them consumables like scrolls and potions. In my Lost Mines of Phandelver Series I do a little more on the act of prepping, maybe check that out. That adventure is set in the same town so if you're looking to add things to DOIP LMOP is a great place to pull from
@@RdotDoyle thanks I’ll have a look when I can 😊
Thanks pal!! I appreciate the pep talk haha
Heck yeah, you got this!
Do I tell the characters the Hp, Ac, immunity's/resistances and damage .
It’s up to the DM’s style but I definitely would not tell them HP. That’s the one thing you can still adjust on the fly in the middle of a combat because things have proven way too hard or easy. They will figure out the AC as the fight progresses, so telling them is fine but I usually don’t. I’ll tell them if this thing looks like it’s got a thick hide or is carrying a shield or something, but not the number outright. Immunity and resistance is more situational. The player may know they need fire to fight a troll but does the PC? I sometimes let them have a roll, or an opportunity to learn. But as long as you give them an escape route learning they should have bought those silver weapons when they had a chance (or whatever) because now they can’t touch this werewolf is good game design in my opinion
@@RdotDoyle thanks so much
where do i get premade charcters to print off
There’s a link in the description here
💕
*Rolls for Initiative*
heck yeah
Is there a reason why your channel name is literally "Value Pig" in Norwegian?
Oh man, I love it. Verdigris is the color of oxidized copper, the root is “Green from Greece” in French. It’s chromatic and metallic and also just sounded cool
