  • Have a Mazda Miata? They rust. A lot. Here's the most common places! Learning where your Miata rusts is super valuable if you own a car and want to preserve it and prevent rust before it starts. It's also a great idea to use this video as a buyer's guide to inspect for rust before you buy a car. This guide is specifically for the NA and NB Mazda MX5 Miata. The most common places include rocker rust, front fender rust, trunk and jackwell rust, door sill and door rust, floorboard rust, parcel shelf rust, brake booster / engine bay rust, frame rail rust and suspension rust. Watch to find out how to check for these

    If you've got a Miata you've probably got rust... where is it the worst on yours?

      My '95 NA had rust on both rear sills. A big problem on UK cars. So I cut it out and rewelded. It had already been badly patched on both sides by a previous owner - probably to get it through the MOT test. It's a guaranteed MOT fail in the UK.
      Had it on the front too but fortunately it was only the outer skin. The inner wings were fine. Everywhere else seems ok.
      Glad I bought an NA though. On the NB, in addition to losing the pop ups, they also changed the design of the front chassis legs and as a result they rust like crazy in that area. It's also really difficult to see unless you really know what you're looking for. Practically all of them go that way and it's apparently very complex to fix. So potential NB purchasers beware!

      Fenders and quarter panels. Other spots to be discovered.

    Also in the battery area. Mine had rust there, door jams where the header seal drains to and underneath of boot lid - all sorted. Still to do are the sills but I've bought a welder and going to give that a try myself.

    If you have a MK2 (NB), another place where rust occurs is the chassis rails. This happens on MK2s because there is a double skin where moisture collects inside. Therefore, causing the chassis rails to rust from the inside out. The MK1 only has a single skin which means the MK1 MX5s don't suffer from this problem.

    I honestly just noticed that rust seems to have coated my entire engine block, even though the cylinder head and top both look okay. I never even noticed it the whole 5 years I've had it...I guess it's time to stress out 🙃 Definitely have been ruing the day that I'd have to take my engine bay apart, but I guess it was inevitable 😩😩

    Great video for the next buyer…..possible me….going to look at a .2009 Mazda MX-5….really hard to inspect all when you go to car dealer….I’ve already looked at 4 mx5’s….was not happy. One had water in the trunk and the floor board standing. I believe it embarrassed the dealer when I pointed out the water….thanks for a great video……

    Could you cover the miata drain holes and cleaning them? My pinch welds kinda look like mashed potatoes because of scraping and jacking up the car so I can't even clear out the clog. If you could create new drain holes by drilling somewhere that'd be so helpful.

    Quick question I have a 1990 miata mx5, do you have power steering? My steering wheel is really hard to turn and is there way to make it easier to turn?

    • @xXbyebyegirl01Xx
      @xXbyebyegirl01Xx Před 3 lety +2

      In 1990 the A package and the B package came with power steering, but the base model didn't. If your car came with the steel wheels then its a base model. If your car has power steering, alloy wheels, and a leather steering wheel then you probably have either the A or B package.

    growing up going through every phase imaginable and deciding i want a miata at age 7 has been very interesting these past 3 months i will say. i got my car a couple days before i got my license and she was great, an 05 silver miata with only 40k and costed $7k! but then she decided that she needs about 4-5 cranks to turn over after driving for a while. that part is the most confusing to me because i am a 16 year old homeschooled girl and i have no idea what to do about it?! and i do have so much nasty stuff in the drainage it’s crazy i didn’t know i needed to clean it. it’s been hectic but i have enjoyed it, i love my car sm. she just scares me lolll
    help would be appreciated by anyone btw
