  • It's time to talk about the marriage crisis in our community, and what we can do about it. Without the health of the institution of marriage, we simply cannot build viable communities and societies; there will always be deficiencies and shortcomings. In this panel discussion, Shaykh Walead Mosaad, Shaykh Hamdi Ben Aissa, and Ustadha Shehnaz Karim address issues particular to those looking to get married, as well as topics relating to what a healthy marriage looks like.
There are several root causes to the marriage crisis, such as the "throwaway" attitude which began with consumerism and found its way into our approach to relationships. The upbringing (tarbiyyah) of both males and females further leaves many of marriageable age far from being ready for marriage. Social support structures such as families and communities have also weakened, making it more difficult both to get married and to stay married. Additionally, there are vast misunderstandings about how to approach meeting a potential spouse, what to look for and expect in a partner, and how and to what extent to involve one's family. Finally, within marriages themselves, pornography addictions continue to wreak havoc, while others are negatively influenced by the culture of sexuality, dangerously unaware of the spirituality and holiness of intimacy.
In the words of Shaykh Hamdi, "Marriage is one of the most sacred matters, approached in the most profane way". However, there are ways that we can move forward from this crisis, protecting future generations from the pains that we have experienced. It is only by understanding the intention and purpose of marriage in our religion, looking to the guidance of Allah and His Messenger (may the peace of God continue to nourish his being and our connection to him), that we will be able to see what steps we can take towards healing the marriage crisis.

Great lecture! as always Shehnaz Karim & her husband Hamdi Ben Aissa are amazing. They give so much to the community.
This is where our money should go and not into mosques that have no programs to help our youth navigate, in addition to having no transparency.
We have a major problem in our Canadian Muslim community. We, parents do not know how to help our children in this area.
May Allah bless Sheikh Ben Aissa, Sheikha Karim.
