TINNY MODS - Installing a new floor in my tinny. Aluminium Checker Plate & Aluminium Support Beams

  • Its time to replace my old marine ply floor with a new aluminium checker plate floor. In this video I replace the rotten floor in my tinny and put a new aluminium checker plate floor in the main area between the seats.
    I've decided to go with aluminium flooring this time for 3 reasons.
    1. The aluminium floor is much lighter in weight and great for smaller boats
    2. The aluminium checker plate floor will not ever rot
    3. The aluminium checker plate floor is just as strong

    Thanks so much for putting this video up! Inspired me to do a floor for my 3.85 Quinny Explorer. Your video assisted so much in showing how I could do this and it's come up a treat. Only difference is that I stuck with ply and carpet just as a preference.
    Again thanks so much and tight lines!

      Thanks Ryan. It’s a job I’ve been wanting to get started for ages and I really enjoyed doing it. Being stored outside makes the timber floor rot, even marine ply doesn’t seem to last. I actually love the checker plate floor as it’s so much lighter, can’t rot and just as strong. This floor is actually a couple of inches lower which feels better too. Now to go catch those fish. 😃🐟🐟🐟🐟👍

    Sorry mate I’ve been away with the boys tennis since Thursday. Was a big few days and even had to leave our apartment under police escort due to the ice heads destroying the unit adjoining mine. They smashed all the widows and were throwing beer bottles into our adjoining wall at 4:30am. 🤦‍♂️

    • @TropicalZooms

    • @TropicalZooms
      @TropicalZooms  Před 3 lety +1

      I bought a strip of aluminium that I riveted between two of the boats supporting ribs then I drilled the little supporting bracket that came with the sounder onto the strip of aluminium. It worked really well. 😃👍

  • @SandmannOZ
    @SandmannOZ Před rokem

    So, this video's two years old now... with the benefit of hindsight are you still happy with it? Noticed any problems since then? Would you change anything about your design? One thing that bothered me was the raw cut ends of the square tubing butted up against the hull... does it not cause wear in the hull from vibrations? Think I'd have put plastic plugs in all the ends of the tubes to protect the hull. Oh and what'd you use to cut the checkerplate with? Jigsaw?

    • @TropicalZooms
      @TropicalZooms  Před rokem +1

      Still going strong mate. I used an angle grinder to cut the checker plate as well as a drop saw with metal disk. The plugs are a good idea but I could fit them into the square tubing when cut on an angle. Probably could’ve tried a bit more as I think it’s a good idea. In saying that I’ve had no dramas and no vibration noises as I used a lot of silicon around every join as well.

      @@TropicalZooms thanks for the reply. I'm picking up a 24 year old runabout tomorrow, it's something I'm thinking I'll have to do. Mine has an underfloor tank though so I'll need to work in a hatch.

    • @TropicalZooms
      @TropicalZooms  Před rokem

      @@SandmannOZ Sounds like fun. I think I’ve actually spent more time in my boat in the garage then I have in the water. I also installed nav lights switch panel switchboard and a small solar panel to charge it all. After that I attached a little telescopic alloy ladder on the back then led submursable trailer lights. I’m a bit of a gadget guy 😃

    • @SandmannOZ
      @SandmannOZ Před rokem

      @@TropicalZooms as am I. A bit of work on the boat today revealed that the outboard's pivot tube is stiff so will have to remove the whole power head to disassemble the steering and clean it up. The gearbox needs new oil seals too, gear oil's not supposed to be white. After that I'll be working on the electrics, starting with putting in a dual battery setup.
