I live in northern California. I'm drowning in cucumbers now. Cherry tomatoes are starting to ripen so I have tomatoes for breakfast. Zucchini is slow but its growing. I planted them in grow bags with marigolds to avoid the squash bugs. It worked so I will do that again. I had blossom end rot with bell peppers and had to add lime to its bed. I don't have a large garden, all is in three 4 x 8 raised beds. It has been a very productive year here. I get so many tips from you, thank you. I loved your video of your micro climate. I have a stucco wall that retains the heat so I may try grow bags this winter along the wall.

Envious to say the least! Your garden is simply amazing and such a wide variety of produce. I do miss our plot of land. It provided us with an incredible selection of fresh produce over the years. We used to pressure can potatoes, green beans and Roma tomatoes and still have many jars. Pressure canning is not common here in the UK so we had to import our pressure canner. @@mircat28 without a lot of help. I’m assuming that means a greenhouse or hothouse. I think Ariel had mentioned plans for something along those lines down the road awhile back. Would allow the starts to be grown from seeds also.
Yep, lots of folks in the area grow tomatoes. 100% of them have greenhouses to do that in. :) One day we will have a greenhouse, just don't have the time or money to do everything at once.
I always eat the brassica leaves. I actually like broccoli and Brussels sprout leaves more than the parts people eat. Also the tops of carrots and radishes. Makes my small garden go farther in the summer and helps pay for the organic veggies at Whole Foods in the winter. (Quite reasonable if you stick to the ACTUAL whole foods at Whole Foods!) I’m sure being owned by Amazon means Whole Foods organic fruits and veggies are just borderline okay, but guessing not much different than most chain grocery stores.

You might try butter bush squash if you want to give winter squash a try. They do well for us. We don't live as high in elevation so our temperatures are higher but we also have a short growing season. Since they are 75 days to maturity they work well for our short season.
Amazing. Everything looks so healthy. Question: have you considered adding a high tunnel to your property to grow things that need an extended season or warmer temps?
The row covers are the white bundles at the sides of the beds. There are hoops throughout the garden beds to roll the covers over so they are not lying directly on the crops. This is an area of high winds also. A high tunnel might be a problem. A sturdy greenhouse has a better chance of survival.
Have you tried sowing potato seeds? This means seeds from their flowers, not from the tubers. Maybe you will get seedlings that are resistant to the special conditions of the area. I think it could be interesting.
@@FyNyth Thanks🥰 as a gardener myself, I am very impressed by your work in such difficult conditions. The difference between us is that our conditions are the opposite of yours. It is very hot here, the rainy season is short and concentrates on 4 months with rain that rarely has frost and the summer is long and hot.
Can you talk more about foliar feeding? How do I figure out which weeds to use? We don't have dandelions here. Can I use the cousin of dandelions, the sow thistle, or these dead nettles I have everywhere? How do I figure out which nutrients they will add?
How do you keep your sauerkraut over the winter? Do you have refrigerator space for it? Is it cool enough in the Shop barm? I hope you'll take us on a tour of all the trees yuou've planted. I'll bet you never expected to use so much plastic on your Homestead, but if it kills the quack grass I'm all for it!
We have a pretty good cool pantry corner built in the shop. Not as good as a root cellar but we will have that one day. I do want to do a tree tour as soon as I have time!
I am amazed at the bounty you harvest from your garden beds. I’m curious about the root crops like potatoes. Do you have to dig no deeper than the concrete blocks to harvest them or do they make their way deeper? I always thought potatoes had to be planted deep.
No, nothing can go lower than the block because of the hardware cloth that we laid down to prevent the pocket gophers (which are still merrily tearing up the yard and other things all around the garden) from demolishing all the garden plants. They probably would like deeper soil and one day we will get deeper beds made. But in the mean time, all these plants have been pretty productive with just their 8 inches of soil which is really nice.

Not applicable now, but there was a video a few years ago about where Ariel stored extra food in the tiny house. Like the bigger kitchen, she did prioritize storage for all the food that her gardens produced. Even buying cases of tomatoes to can.
Will you reapply prasitical nematoids in your soil? At some point are there plans for a full-sized plastic covered (double plastic w/air-filled space between the two layers) for your garden area?
Mostly it's a problem when it freezes hard right when the tree is in bloom. So we plant lots of different varieties that bloom at different times so some hopefully survive each year. Of course there are lots of more warm loving fruits we can't grow at all here but apples do ok most years.

Where do you store all your canned goods...your house is so tiny.
Well obviously they have storage somewhere !
They do have a large storage shed that holds their wood and equipment.
They aren't living in the tiny house now because they have built a temporary living space into the workshop--there's a great tour video of it.
