The sidekick was played by the great Gabby Hays, who made an entire career out of playing the same cantankerous sidekick. He was one of the most beloved actors in movie history. John Wayne explained the poker rule very clearly. Because the card, a queen, had been dropped face up, it was dead, it could not be played in the hand.
Comedy western with James Stewart: Destry Rides Again with a legendary cat fight. Some John Wayne movies on the comedic side: North To Alaska and Donavan’s Reef and Hatari
@@marks3750 He even played a bit part in "Son of Frankenstein" as a gendarme, although most of his shots were cut out save for one or two brief glimpses.
I am at work, and will head home soon. If Dawn Marie laughs, and smiles and asks questions, in this Reaction...it'll be a great video that i am looking forward too.
Oh my God in heaven! I LOVE this movie, it’s my absolute favorite of Wayne’s early period. Yes, I love Stagecoach too but, I watch this one more than any. Never thought I’d actually witness a reactor watching this. Sooooo happy, thanks Dawn!
Was happy tosee this movie come up. I knew that you would enjoy it. There are just so many old school westerns to choose from. One of my favorites is "Destry Rides Again" (1939) with a young Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich. It has all the checks too.
BESSSS REACTION AAAAAVERR!!! I'm going on 62 years old and I've never come across this movie 🍿🎥 1944 about 2 years into World War 2. Crazy time for a well done film!! Great Job Dawn!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
One thing I love about the early John Wayne movies is the authentic props. Did you notice the fire side oven at around 11:00. Most of the props were not remanufactured pieces, but were ones simply collected from the ranches around where they made the movie.
I find myself paying as much attention to the props as I do the actors in old films. I keep saying, "I wish I had that..." The hardest scene to pay attention to is in the Maltese Falcon. How can Bogart get upstaged by the 'Eternal Match' that is on his desk? But yeah, early westerns had real equipment that was still around. The old desks, unique lamps and lights, wagons, stagecoaches etc.
The cards are marked with the suit and # on the back. Usually on the top left and lower right corners. Actual old west cards did not have the number on the face of the cards. Players would have to count the suits. At times the “card sharp” may use an exotic mix to make a mark on the cards that can be seen using sunglasses. This was rarer since you had to make an excuse to wear the glasses. This was done by Doc Holiday in the movie “Wyatt Earp”. Cards may also be trimmed so when you deal a card can be recognizable. Another way is to make an impression on the card(s) that the play will recognize when dealing with. Each must be done carefully so the other players will not notice. There were other tricks too but any of these tricks were not used continually. Good card players only needed an “edge”.
Glad you enjoyed it. A sadly underappreciated Wayne. The scene where he comes down the stairs buckling his gun belt and the scene where he does a gun butt when a shootout is expected are two of his best scenes in my mind. I cant wait until you eventually do "Ride The High Country" - the actual BEST MOVIE EVER
Thanks for your reaction to Tall In The Saddle. The character Dave was played by George "Gabby" Hayes (b. 1885- d. 1969). He was the comic sidekick of the cowboy stars Roy Rogers and John Wayne. He had appeared in 174 Westerns, usually with Roy Rogers (44 times), with Gene Autry (7), Wild Bill Elliot (14), Randolph Scott (6), and John Wayne (15 times, some as straight or villainous characters). A fairly extensive list of films and story of his life and work can be found on Wikipedia under his name. 'See ya down the trail', Dawn Marie.
There were hundreds of grade B westerns, made. I would love to watch you viewing every one of them! You are definitely my favorite film reviewer! Never, a dull moment!

Well done Dawn Marie, another great pic and reaction. You might be first on this one. You're a bit of a pioneer when it comes to reactions, like it. "Katie Elder," is another classic of his.
Back in the day (early 70's), I grew up watching stuff like this on UK television. But back then they were only 30 year old movies. When they show a 30 year old movie on TV nowadays, it's a different kind of classic - Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Stargate, Lion King, etc. It's wierd getting old, but real fun to watch someone from a younger generation get so much joy out of watching these B&W classics.

"The Cowboy and the Lady " is a romantic western starring Gary Cooper and Merle Oberon. Another b&w RomCom worth watching is "My Man Godfrey, " starring William Powell and Carol Lombard.
Watch 1982's "Barbarosa" a western with Willie Nelson in the role of a lifetime and a 20's something Gary Busey of all people. A truly great western. Almost entirely forgotten today.
The Searchers greatest John Wayne movie. Greatest John Ford movie. Greatest western. Greatest movie, ever, many will contend. Just ask George Lucas, Martin Scorsese.
Great reaction Dawn. Best movie ever! That Ella Raines was quite a dish... and good with the knife throw. Loved the way the very dodgy looking fellow turned out to be one of the good guys. And Gabby Hays, what a character. Another black and white John Wayne film is Fort Apache, directed by John Ford and also starring Henry Fonda, Maureen O'hara and Ward Bond. A serious film but excellent and the start of John Ford's famous "Cavalry Trilogy" with the Duke (John Wayne).
One of Wayne's best. Good pick and great reaction. You might be the first for this classic. You also may have noticed that actors like Wayne and Bogart seem play best with strong female characters. Might try, "Sons of Katie Elder." It's not B&W, but you'll probably recognize some faces again.
Yeah why would you want to wreck the whole experience & watch it in color!?!?!? That's ridiculous, I don't think you understand or appreciate the affinity for the original in B&W or why!!!

Yay, I love this one! I may be wrong, but I think this is the first western, or one of the first anyway, in which Duke really started doing that trademark walk he's so famous for. Great selection. Almost nobody knows about this Wayne movie. I've always thought the lead actress was beautiful and should have been more famous. She does a great job. The script and acting is so superior to less good but more well-known films. Wayne's character knew he was related to Red Cardell. So he never was going to fall for Red's grand niece. The audience just didn't know.
On an entirely different note, today is Andy Warhol's birthday (though it will be yesterday in Scotland by the time you read this), which I thought I'd mention apropos of the print of the boys on your wall.

A Snort means a Shot of whiskey.
John Wayne and Ward Bond were old college football teammates and came to the movies at the same time.
That's Gabby Hayes, if anyone has ever watched Blazing Saddles he's the old gruffy man with the beard they are trying to imitate.

A "four flusher" is a card cheat, as in they're trying to pass off four cards of the same suit as a flush when you need five of the same suit.
Ward Bond with character that is completely different from any of the characters he's played. He's definitely a hidden gem
