I have been recording my own music for about a year now. I never performed vocals at all before but with your videos I gotta say I’m not half bad now. I’m having so much fun doing vocals.
thanks for the advice :) i'been thinking about changing a verse of a song because it's just too fast and too on top of other lines that i just wouldn't be able to perform normally, it sounds really cool but now i think i can narrow it down to something more simple and just as cool as it was in the first place. Can't wait for more videos like this!

I’ve been a vocalist for 18 years and the one thing that I always forget: be ourselves, use our strengths and weakness’ as vocalists to make our own sound. I get so caught up on how brutal vocalist X or Y is, that it feels like you may not just be “good.” But really… we just all have our own sound. Cheers man. You do great work! So good. I truly agree with basically all of David's insights here. After all these (many, oh so many, I'm so old...) years of writing music, not as a vocalist actually, I find these guidelines so cohesive with the process of creating something new. But also, it was good to hear, especially the last part - basically, "It's okay to sometimes be judgy about your own creation, but not to the point it paralyzes you"
Its Strange I love lots of different music. But always fall back to writing metal type stuff its just seems to be so, but its fun to write different styles. great content.

Thank you for the kind words. Being “guilty” of any of these things is not necessarily a bad thing if it’s a choice! But sometimes it does take stepping back and realizing that you’re going to get the best product when you play to your strengths which can be hard to do especially if you get stuck on an idea or specific sound! I've been doing this for over 15 years, I wish I had known not to full on scream and rip your throat to shreds i.e. Jane Doe era Converge and Terrifyer era Pig Destroyer. They are using moderate to heavy effects, especially JR from Pig Destroyer and I was replicating that as if that was their natural voice. Once I figured out my own thing and also about vocal processing I was able to do this and not wreck myself every show...also would have never drank alcohol before performing. This is a great channel, thank you.
One thing that I am you can kinda maybe call it a little scared of is that when I write lyrics, I tend to repeat certain words (it doesn’t happen all the time but..) and if the ones that listens will get bored of hearing small little words sometimes repeated throughout the lyrics...I mean words like “I”, “we”, you” etc...And I don’t want people to be all bored about the lyrics I’m writing😅...is there any certain “rule” to follow on that point, to fix with it?
All depends on the delivery. There are plenty of songs with very repetitive lyrics - sometimes even just one line - that do exceptionally well! It’s a stylistic choice at that point! If that’s something you personally get irritated by then practice challenging yourself to write without those words as practice 😁

Lots of professional artists even seek out help when it comes to writing to make sure they’re getting their ideas across in the way that they want to. If you’re dead set on doing things on your own, do some research on different writing styles. Mix it up and maybe you’ll get out of your funk! 😊
It varies from vocalist to vocalist and album to album. With the really exasperated sound because a lot of it was just emotive it would vary on the day to day basis. Most of what you’re hearing that you like is the constricted fry sound, it appears louder because it’s essentially a shout with the fry distortion happening by accident which is what makes that more damaging (too much air pressure = friction). As an alternative, you could work on the relaxed, very open full fry and then work on performing it in a more expressive way and the combination of the technique and attitude will make it quite “sound right” without being overly taxing while still getting the right idea across. This was a amazing video , I was guilty and still guilty of a lot of this . My head voice became something other than my own and it was hindering me .

My problem was always fitting the lyrics I wrote to the song. If that makes sense. It always for exactly to the melody of the music. It was boring.

My biggest struggle was I'm the only one out of everyone I was in bands with who didn't wanna do covers

Wouldn’t necessarily call that a mistake unless they are also making those other ones 😅 Not everyone is a songwriter and that’s okay!
