  • Harriman / Bear Mountain State Parks - A Night In Doodletown
    May 19th - 21st, 2017
    Total Trip Mileage: 13.52mi
    Elevation Gained: 3,343'
The second trip in the Harriman series, this was a hike I threw together when I saw a picture of one of the foundations in Historic Doodletown a few days before leaving. I also enjoy still photography so this was a good opportunity to do some long-overdue shooting.
I didn't have a route in mind, I only knew I wanted to end up in the town by 1:30-2:00pm on Saturday to give myself enough light and time to spend a few hours exploring.
The route I eventually picked took a path that summited 2 mountains (Bald and Dunderberg) on Saturday and gave me close to 4 hours to go explore the town thanks to a well-placed shelter at the South end of town. West Mountain was the final summit to push over to get back home on Sunday.
Part 3 is filming this weekend (6/2-6/4) for National Trails Day.
More information about Historic Doodletown can be found here: en.wikipedia.o...
    Thanks for watching!

I really enjoyed this video !!!!! Excellent Trail !!! Me and some friends did the Bear Mountain Trail to Tower and back which took us 3 hours, then 2 weeks later we did the Antony's Nose Trail and it took us 2 hours to top and back. This Sat 26th we are going to try to do Bald Mountain/Doodletown Loop. It said 5.7 miles ( not sure if it's round trip or one way ).

Bit late on the reply, but thanks! Anthony's Nose is a favorite of mine, as is the Breakneck Ridge trail. I'll usually head to BNR and climb the cliffs then head out to the Beacon fire tower. It's a good clip (I believe 8 miles or so, would have to look it up) but well worth it in views.
I'm sure you had a blast on the Bald Mtn/Doodletown loop. That town is so cool, lots of history there!

Just watched, nice video, but you gave me a big laugh at the end. This past Sunday did about 6 miles in Harriman, coming back, went down a nice unmarked path that was pretty rocky and steep. No problem... get to about 1/10th of a mile from Reeves Meadow Center and my foot caught a small rock and I went down hard.... just some bruises but still, WTF!

HAHA, it wouldn't be a hike without at least one spill. Thanks for checking out the video, and thanks for the sub as well! Much appreciated. Safe hiking my friend!
I see you have some videos up as well, loving the drone shots!! I'm definitely going to check them all out.

Hey! Thanks for checking it out. At the moment I don't upload my GPX files but I do have plans to make them available, I just have to put it all in place.

what about the rules ? I guess they are for the rest of us mortals. You can not camp just anywhere you feel like it.

Which site, the one up on the cliff with the fire ring? Harriman is literally filled with sites like that. Looking at my GPS data I've got no less than 15 just like it, all with established fire rings and usage beyond my visits. They are everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Near water, on a cliff, on top of mountains, on the trail...I won't say Harriman is the Wild West of NY hiking but it's darn close. I was hiking at 8:45 in the morning once and some dude rolls out of his hammock butt naked, 50' feet off the trail.
All that said, I still do my part to be as low impact as possible at the sites I do chose to use and I pack out (most) garbage I find while I'm there hiking (replace food weight with garbage weight, works out good).
Living in the North Eastern US, do you know just how hard it is to find solitude while on the trail? I have absolutely no issue staying in a shelter with a FEW people, but have you ever seen the top of West Mountain or the easy-trail-access shelters on a weekend in the Summer? I'll risk the ticket and be much less of a negative impact on the environment than the 20+ people up there.

@@johntuttle4486 your a loser why Don't you worry about the hoodlums and people who disgrace nature with graffitti and litter instead of trolling a guys video who clearly solos in the park. Your over here talking about rules....get off your high horse. I've camped in Harriman over 100 times and I've NEVER camped at a shelter, there'd be no where to set up and no fire wood.
