I know literally nothing about the system and may start collecting for it someday so this is nice to hear although I will have to watch this video several times because I don't know anything about files and such. Omg I've learned so much with your channel. Yes it was very costly but so worth it. lol I have a n64 ultra hdmi kit on the way. But most interesting is that I have all my systems now modify and all RGB modified like snes, turbo duo rx and my nes by kevtris and the win mod. Watching your channel has changed my gaming collection to a whole new level. I've got the framemeister and the hydra 8 selecter. Omg your channel seems to be a god sent on retro gaming makeovers. But!!! I just purchased a Atari jaguar and I'd love to see how to get the best video for it and the 3do and I think I'm completely done. Thank you guys so much!!! I love when people come over and don't know what the framemeister is and when then know even what a scary cable is. I always say my life in gaming" change my life".!!

    I absolutely love my Mega SD. I was an SNES kid, but my brother and I bought a Genesis model 2 after a summer of yard work to save money. We never had many games for it, maybe 4 total, but it expanded what we could rent from Blockbuster. Then our genesis sat in a box in our parents' house for about 20 years. Then, last summer (2019) I asked my brother if I could have it and he was fine with it, so I took it to my house, bough some component cables from HD Retrovision, and got a Mega SD. It won't be long before I put in more time on that old model 2 than I did as a kid.
    I have never owned a PC engine. I've never even played a real one. I had one friend as a kid who briefly owned a TurboGrafx 16, but promptly sold it to buy an SNES when that came out. I was well in my 30s the first time I ever played a PC Engine game, and that was on my Japanese Retro Freak clone console that will play PC Engine games off real Hu Cards or an SD Card and output 720p over HDMI. It's compatible with real controllers too, but I don't own any. The glaring flaw with the Retro Freak's PC Engine emulation is that there is absolutely no way to play any CD based games (though it does play the, what? 5? 6? SuperGrafx games). While you can get a full Sega Genesis experience without any of the Sega CD games, the CD titles for the PC Engine are where that console really shined. Arguably, most of the best PC Engine games were on CDs. I can emulate them on my PC, but I'd prefer real hardware.
    After buying my Mega SD, and enjoying the Sega CD for the first time, I learned about the Super SD System 3. Again, I don't own a PC Engine, but I've seen for sale on Japanese auction sites going for around $60. If I'm going to pay $300 for a Super SD System 3, an extra $60 for a PC Engine is a no brainer. And you're arguably getting a lot more with the Super SD System 3 than with the Mega SD since the CD games are the main draw of the PC Engine library. And that it will work with the HD Retrovision component cables I already bought for my Genesis (and use with my Saturn) makes this a purchase I'm seriously considering making.
    At the moment of writing this, Terraonion is sold out of Super SD System 3s, but I hope this is temporary. Maybe they are making a new batch that solves those audio and loading issues mentioned in this video.

    This will be a nice addition to my Phoebe-equipped Saturn and USB-GDROM-equipped Dreamcast. Definitely echo the sentiment at the end of the video - must-have for Sega CD!

      I emphatically disagree. It's a unique product made by a tiny outfit and *far* cheaper to buy than the equivalent hardware it replicates - and that's before you spend the time / money on necessary mods and recapping it all. It's still a bargain even if current versions may need a little tinkering to get their audio and RGB video optimal - and don't forget that it is a high end product made for a long dead vintage console. Multinational electronics corporations would never in a trillion years green light production of a device like this, a device made for a group of enthusiasts who fully understand that its production will never yield large economies of scale for the manufacturer as well as being a fundamentally risky endevour.

    • @charvelgtrs
      @charvelgtrs Před 6 lety +24

      Its not a high end product if it comes with obvious flaws. If this was $100 I'd be less hard on it, but at $300 it better perform as advertised.

    Great information and video as usual. This device is cool but PC Engine / SuprGrafx CD ROM emulation is so good across the board (as far as my experience goes - including arcade card games like Saphire) that i'm perfectly happy with that, even on cheap android based devices with HDMI out it works like a dream and there's none of those video noise issues. This is only the view of someone who's not desperate to own PC Engine hardware of course.

    I recently bought one of these mod units for my TurboGrafx-16. After several tests and fidgeting around, I just couldn't get it to work. On the outside, everything seemed fine. The console turned on with no issue, and the light on the side of the SSDS3 was working. Upon further inspection, however, it seems the SSDS3, when inserted, bends some of the contacts in the console's expansion port. Whether this is because the pins are flat out not making it into the contacts of the SSDS3, or these pins are supposed to bend is unknown to me. After carefully straightening the pins in the expansion port with a flat head, and numerous attempts, the most I could ever get out of the mod unit was a blank white screen. Considering how few people actually own the SSDS3, I wouldn't be surprised if my problem is unique.
    Is there something I'm missing here?
    Could my micro SD card have anything to do with this problem?
    Is the SSDS3 incompatible with the TurboGrafx-16?
    I'm really at a loss here, and I especially want to enjoy this unit. Hopefully you guys, or someone out there can see this and help me out. Thanks.

      They do... GDEmu and USB-GDRom. I went USB-GDROM.
      Also removed one of the regulators on the power supply (found it on a reddit forum) and it reduced the extra heat that would have been voltage for the GD motor.

    • @SageOwl
      @SageOwl Před 6 lety +2

      If they could make it 100% solid state, then it would last forever. Imagine it just keeping cool without fans, woaah. I also have the USB-GDROM and it's awesome; the guy who makes it is, however, not so awesome.

    1. I am actually thinking spending some cash on this. How is the RGB. im hearing some lacking quality. is that correct? I dought Ill even care. They really should of made it a hdmi adapter and it upscales. IDK really i got a framemeister. This thing seems to be the one im going for since it plays the cd games better and better loading times and plays the regular games so no need for a everdrive. any side effect if the system is already rgb modded for the turbo graphics? Do i still need a regan mod?
    2. I been reading there coming out more devices that plays the games. one that plays the cd games from the hue card slot somehow. I may see how that roles out.
    3. I am hearing that the turbo graphics or pc engine don't need recapping right. I don't have the know how in soldering or know anyone who will do it for a reasonable price.. but the duo does need all this stuff done to it like recap and other mod work.
    4. I was told by a couple of guys to get a fully modded duo. IDK. i kinda don't want to collect. and ripping the cd games i hear is a pain and ill still need a everdrive.
    5. Can someone help me out and answer my questions.

      [Try4ce] My PC Engine Interface Unit mod uses a bigger DIN. I don't know if your SCART is the right size or wiring for it. It's possible, but I don't know.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  Před 5 lety

      [Try4ce] I don't think it should introduce any lag, but sadly not many devices perform this conversion, if any! I agree, it would be very handy, but I've never run across it.

    • @hansweiss469
      @hansweiss469 Před 6 lety

      That would be awesome, but think of how much it could cost. I love the FPGA approach for preserving old consoles and games, but I am worried about how pricey some systems can get. Look at the Nt mini.

    • @greenwoodforrest
      @greenwoodforrest Před 6 lety +3

      The Nt Mini's price is mostly due to its fancy aluminum case, not the FPGA. The Super Nt @ $189 USD is a more realistic benchmark for what an FPGA Genesis might cost. CD support is still a huge question mark with any FPGA Genesis remake, though.

    Another awesome video - thanks! So, are we all calling it 'Vintage Gaming' now? I guess 'retro gaming' did have kind of a trashy feel to it, 'vintage' kind of classes it up! ;) Regarding the SSS 3 - had my eye on this one for a while, but I'm going to wait for it to land at Stoneage Gamer first. I did that with the NeoSD and had no regrets. It's easier than trying to deal with all of the bank transfer issues Terra Onion has being overseas, and for some reason they don't want to offer a PayPal option to ease the stress for customers. In this particular case waiting was even more beneficial, as they still seem to be ironing out some fairly impactful hardware and firmware issues...

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  Před 6 lety

      [Coury] Yeah, I kinda made a conscious decision to start referring it to "vintage" instead of "retro" because I felt it was more accurate. Retro is more about new stuff made to look old, and vintage is classy old stuff.
