Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins on REINVENTED with Jen Eckhart

  • TODAY IS THE GREATEST DAY -- because Jen sits down with a two-time Grammy award-winning frontman of one of the most influential bands of all time, The Smashing Pumpkins! Despite all his rage, William Patrick Corgan has sold 30 million albums worldwide, and is currently selling out arenas in the U.S. for his “Spirits on Fire” tour.
On this week’s episode of REINVENTED, Jen Eckhart and Billy Corgan discuss the self-made musician's influence in shaping the culture of the ‘90s alternative rock movement, as well as his friendly rivalry with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. Jen also asks 'what Billy Corgan today would tell Billy Corgan in his 20s,' including how he paved the way for outliers, misfits and weirdos to be considered “cool.” They also get into his late father’s addiction to heroin, growing up in an abusive household, and how he has managed to stay sober and motivated over the years to keep reinventing himself as an artist.
The dynamic duo also take a deep dive into his brand new podcast “Thirty-Three,” and how he stuck it to the naysayers with the upcoming release of his 3-part rock opera album called “ATUM,” his Christian faith and how he balances being a touring rockstar and a dad to two young children. Jen also puts Billy Corgan on the spot in a hilarious rapid fire round of questioning -- which includes an epic argument over Chicago Deep Dish pizza vs. Jen's beloved New York Pizza!
Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to REINVENTED with Jen Eckhart on Spotify, Apple podcasts, iHeartRadio and CZcams. You can also follow @JenniferEckhart on social media. Thanks for listening & ROCK ON!

If Billy Corgan really cared what people thought about him or his music there is no way I would be watching this at 3.30am in the morning. I only care about genuine people and genuine artists. Billy just happens to be both.

On Saturday I was walking around Graceland and when I got to the parking lot, I looked over and there was Billy Corgan. I knew it was him but didn't approach him. It felt like he didn't need me, a stranger, coming up to him in that moment. He was just a man, spending time at Graceland in the wake of the loss of Lisa Marie. At the time I did not know he was a friend of hers. He sang beautifully for her at the funeral on Sunday morning. That had to have been such a difficult thing for him to do. Sending him love and hoping he continues to be exactly who he is: An incredibly humble and gifted resident of planet earth.

I have been a fan for a long time, have always trusted Billy's creative vision, but with ATUM I'm in disbelief at how distinctive, wild, crisp, dignified, uncompromising and not-from-a-50-year-old it sounds. This is certainly no longer the Fool of Teargarden. Things are just continuing to work out so well for him creatively and it's clearly because of his underlying spiritual integrity.

Listening to Siamese Dream at 14 for the first time was a life defining moment for me and Mr. Corgan became one of the most influental men in my life, not just musically. Thanks for the opportunity to get a little update on him in such an entertaining way, guess I'm leavingnot just an even bigger Billy Corgan fan, but a Jen Eckhardt fan, too. Absolutely my favorite artist of all time ... the only person I've seen always give an honest interview & when asked about scandalous happenings in the music industry he curiously always seems to pull back the curtain for the public to peer. An intelligent, thoughtful, self-effacing rock star- and the only one I've paid to see live dozens of times over the years (and spent thousands on merch and t-shirts too lol) with all sortsa his different band configurations and solo project endeavors. Even the one man show at murmur Theater was one of the best performances... still, nothing compares to the 3 🎸 guitar onslaught that the live band brings these days (not including Jack Bates! Love you too Jack!!)
