  • Detailed account of a flight with my wife in the 1948 Ercoupe 415-E, from Nevada County Airport to South Lake Tahoe. We had lunch, and I got some some slow motion glamour shots of Diane, much to her chagrin!
    Music:
    First track: New Land by Albis,
    Second track: Kamogawa Dreaming by South London HiFi.

    Flying from Fresno to Mammoth deep over the Sierras, in a Cessna 120, we iced up and lost engine. Pulled carb heat and put it in dive to start engine, as it was a prop start engine, no starter. Turned around and flew back to Fresno with tail between legs. We were lucky! Great video, BTW!!

    I bought a 1947 Ercoupe in 1985 to get my license in. It cost me $2,500 for the plane. We had a V tail Bonanza and a 172 Skyhawk growing up, but I always wanted an Ercoupe, so I got one out of high school. Your video makes me miss it very much.

      LOL - I bought Ercoupe N99404 in 1995, also to get my license in. It also cost me $2,500. Dad flew a Cherokee 140 and Cessna 185 on floats growing up. Although an aviation enthusiast I had never seen an Ercoupe until 1994. Instantly got hooked. Owned it for 10 years, based at DXR, BED, and SCH. A fantastic and capable aircraft. Yes, this video shows it off well.

    Nice Ercoupe. I had a 415-C. Used it to build hours and take check ride at Oroville. Sold it to move up to a Sundowner. Being 6'4" I had to sit sideways to be comfortable. It was fun and easy to fly.

    I am very impressed that you take your Ercoupe on challenging adventures! Well done sir. It’s one thing to go into airports like Tahoe in a 182 or similar, and quite another to trust your skills and your plane in a modestly powered aircraft. You sir are a pilot in the best sense of the word!

    Nice video! Next time you're up in that area do a flyover of Lindsay Lake, Upper Lindsay (as we always called it) and Culbertson Lake). A bit N of where Hwy 20 intersects with what is now Interstate 40. When we traveled up there on weekends from San Leandro the road into Lindsay was so rough it was pretty isolated. Many weekends we had Upper Lindsay all to ourselves. The only reason there was even a road was so PG&E could get in to open the gates on the little rock dams on those lakes to control the water flow. Lower Lindsay was the most difficult to drive into and we found out why when my father flew back from a CWA Union convention and looked down over the lake-it's in an old volcano. Beautiful area, around 6000 to 7500 feet altitude and lots of trout.

    Hi James I am an Aircraft mechanic and I noticed on your video that your wing tip camera is picking up a marked skin ripple in flight on the R/H wing from the Centre of pressure area rearwards towards the trailing edge as if the skin is either not attached or possibly cracked in that area I would look at the rivets in that area to see if they are still holding kind regards a fellow Brit and aviation enthusiast

    • @JamesGood
      @JamesGood  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Craig. I will check that out next time I'm up at the hangar. I have inspection holes on the lower skin, so I can pop those off and check quite easily. Cheers!

    • @hyime69
      @hyime69 Před 5 lety

      Hi James sorry to cause you Alarm We had a similar thing on the English Electric Lightnings when I was in the RAF. They would polish them up to Bare Skin in an attempt to make them quicker however the process wears the Heads of the rivets away causing them over time to fail plus it can also reduce the Wing skins thickness and it too suffers Cracking and tearing due to material issues if you go to an A&Ps basic practices manual and look at Riveting and the way a Rivet works removing material from the head area can reduce the PSI Loading considerably another sign is black streak marks down wind in the Airflow direction which shows the rivets are Chattering due to being loose a good indicator of problems Regards Craig

    • @JamesGood
      @JamesGood  Před 5 lety

      Craig, it's OK, it's nice to receive a message from someone who's worked on Lightnings! No alarm was taken, just good info to check. I think my rivet heads are OK (I've certainly not noticed any black streaking downwind of the heads), but I will have a look and discuss with my IA to make sure. I believe I understand what you are saying, and I do appreciate the comment. Will let you know what we see.

    • @hyime69
      @hyime69 Před 5 lety +1

      Again sorry to cause you any worry and The Lightnings were a beast to work on but I was lucky in my short time on them I was able to have a few flights in them and do the famous Lightning Climb I left the RAF in 1990 and carried on in Aviation engineering and also with my love of Flying I was a Gliding instructor in the RAFGSA and I have held a PPL and have flown all around Northern /Western Europe in a Share owned PA28R Arrow 1 I was also able to fly in the GR3/ Trainer T4 Harrier which was my last operational Sqn I served on all good fun I finished my career at AIR CANADA at Heathrow after working for Cessna as European Tech Rep in Belgium I was also working for 5 yrs with Gulfstream plus airlines as an Airframe/Engine's Tech but I have a passion for all things aviation from a boy as my Father was a Navy pilot and Airline Captain on Boeing 707's in the late 60s - 70s in the Jet ages heyday so I was born into it. I love the Trip Vlog to OSKOSH this year and some amazing scenery and the FBO's you stayed at and visited all good stuff it would be nice if your Son could come along next time and appreciate it

    Hey Ercoupe Bro! I have a fully restored 1946 415C. Like a nut, I took a 1946 fuselage, and literally took it down to bare metal, then hung brand new OEM (Univair) parts on it! I mean new wings (fabric for lighter weight), new tail, main landing gear, nose gear, engine (Don's Dream Machines), mounts, cowling, bubble windshield, panel, instruments, control wheels, seat frame, seat pan, seats, etc! Took me 2 years (and that was 14 years ago!). Still have it. The good news: It flies great! The bad news: I am soooooo badly buried in it that I can never sell it :(

    I am curious. Does this Ercoupe have rudder pedals in it? If memory serves that were made originally without them. You steered the plane on the ground as you would a car - you turned the wheel. The rudder was hooked into the system (as well as the nose wheel) so that when the wheel was turned in flight-the rudder automatically deflected. Crosswind landings were a challenge as there was no way to "slip" the plane ("cross controls"). Later on there was a kit that was offered to have rudder pedals.

    • @JamesGood
      @JamesGood  Před 4 lety

      Hi Donald. Yes, my '48 E-model Ercoupe does have the rudder pedal kit fitted. So I have the option of slipping/crabbing it in a bit. The nose wheel is still connected to the ailerons, so I still steer with the yoke on the ground.

    You really need to lean the mixture at the altitudes you're flying. Much better for the engine and you can save about .5 gal. per hour depending.

      Hi Ron. I actually often get remarks that 'I must lean very well' when people see the color of the exhaust pipe. Not sure you can really see how much I'm leaned in the video, and I believe I always do lean to the point of dropping the rpm, then adding a little bit back in. What you say is true to what I was taught. Thanks for the comment!

      Try flying an Aerostar with the Ray Jay turbos out of South Lake.
      You have to bring up the throttles with the brakes set, then start increasing the MAP up with the turbos which are controlled with rocker switches on the throttle quadrants. It is a real dance trying to set the throttles while starting the AC with your feet to get the power set.
      Thankfully all that was changed by Piper when they assumed command.

    Your explanation of carb heat was wrong. It doesn’t take air from the exhaust system, it takes fresh outside air which has been heated by going over the exhaust.

    • @JamesGood
      @JamesGood  Před 4 lety

      Yup, you're right. I do actually know how my carb heat works. I guess I can't fly and try and explain these things very well...

    Which model Ercoupe is that, and what is your useful load with full fuel?

    • @JamesGood
      @JamesGood  Před 4 lety +1

      It’s an E model. Empty aircraft with full fuel is 1100lbs. Max gross is 1400.

      What's a service ceiling? :) The 10 page POH does not list one. I guess as high as she'll go. I've been up to about 11,500.

    A word of advise. Never put a plane down in water in an emergency landing. Never. I know through experience.

      Too sensitive, yes, it was. It had a problem, I think the bearings were going or something.
