LYRICS:
this is nonstop baby
you've got me going crazy
you're heavier than i knew
but i dont want no other
youre my cameo love
only here for a moment or two
you stay inside that bubble
with all of your trouble
in your black hole
you turn from the skies
you dance with your demise
i'll be here when you come home
we've all gotta break down
let me come and break down with you
cos everydays like talking in ur sleep!
love is like a silhoeutte in dreams!
open up your heart!
open up your heart and let me pull you out of here
ive got high hopes baby
but all you do is take me down to depths that i never knew
you've got two arms baby
they're all tangled in ladies of the black skies posing blue
let go of your mother
and turn to your brother!
not a long gone lovers noose
sometimes baby the hardest part of breaking is leaving pieces behind you
we've all gotta get by
let me come and hold you high, with you
cos everydays like talking in ur sleep!
love is like a silhoeutte in dreams!
open up your heart!
open up your heart and let me pull you out of here
open up your heart to me!
the sun won't shine if you're not looking
baby love is all that you need
She deserves far more recognition. Mostly she's known for her contribution in Somebody That I Used to Know, but her music is way better than what she did there. She's fun to listen to.
Agree 1000000%
Highly underrated
THATS WHO THIS IS?!?
Juan Carlos Alvarado Morones she's great! I still love her
Juan Carlos Alvarado Morones, I know right. Her music is great, no cheap cheating, and can actually sing. She wrote all of this song. She knows what he is doing. She needs more fame, she deserves it.
Kimbra needs to reclaim her era.
She really does!!
Yes ma’am
Yup.
Yes
I like how this just jumps right into the song, no funny business.
true so many songs now take so long to get into it and have such long start instrumentals its annoying
Anthony Neale I know
Because its non stop baby
Anthony Neale It's even worse when they have stupid skits that are absolutely pointless!
Yeah mean like "Yeah, uh, yeah, uh, yo, (record label) (record label) (record label) (artists stage name) (artists stage name) YEAH UH, YEAH YEAH YO"
It's 2024 and this song is still such a classic I love it!
Ameeen
pop used to be so good
For the music theory nerds out there, the harmony in this song is really unconventional and interesting. It starts out firmly in Gb, with the lead-up to the chorus making it clear that the key will stay the same ("all gotta break down, ..." : V7/ii - (iii - bII7/ii) - ii - V7). However, the first Gb of the chorus, which we're expecting to be the I, inexplicably becomes recontextualized as the IV, first with the #11(C) in the descending portion of the line played by the plucked strings, and then more irrevocably with the repeating ii - iii - IV - V in Db of the "open up your heart, ..." section. The effect is jarring but fresh, and quite unlike anything I can recall ever hearing in tonal harmony.
It makes sense from a songwriting perspective too because of how it matches with the lyrics ("all gonna break down..." just before the unexpected key change, and the repeated "open up your heart" as our ears adjust, or open up, to the new key center.)
what
Can you explain is for us non-experts? I agree this song is cool! But I don't understadt what V7 and ii means
@@criskp6861 Kimbra pulls off a very sneaky key change in the chorus, in a way that should sound amateurish and directionless, but ends up being interesting and even sophisticated because of how subtly and skillfully she lands it.
CIMH was probably the first song I’ve ever heard do a downward shift key change. Coolest thing ever.
Hell yea dude thanks for the break down.

leisurelydinner Hah... i like you...
leisurelydinner i guess you havent heard of kpop yet.
honestly one of the greatest pop songs ever made, it is so sonically dynamic and nothing ever stays the same in this song, there are so many subtle touches that work together phenomenally, from the fact that the harmonies and melodies clash with one another, fitting into the theme of kimbra trying to "open up your heart", to the key change, the fact that the chorus changes FOUR fucking times after the key change, the double tracking throughout the track, just phenomenal.
kimbra should've been one of the main pop stars and i'll die on that hill
let me join you on that hill
speak on it, she’s one of the greats of 2010s pop! her discography is incredible, and her new album is shaping up to be brilliant as well
She should have been, but she speaks ill of Vows and has done everything in her power to distance herself from pop music. She seems to want to dabble in a new genre with each album. But with the last 2, it appears she has found her home. Hopefully, she has recognition in the sphere of Bjork someday, since that experimental style seems to be more up her alley.
The song is not good.

this song has whole the potential to annoy me yet it doesn't
i feel this so much
That's an understatement. Everything tells me I should hate it but it's actually catchy.
That's Kimbra's great strength - she can write happy stuff that's not simpering.
This song had to grow on me. I don't know why, but I thought it was just extremely annoying, but I love it.
It’s a masterpiece
2018 and still here. I hate that i forgot about her. She dances like an angel.

I'll be honest, I like the way she dances. Yup.
how could you not??
+Falcy Chead I find it weird that I actually don't. I love her voice, style, and think she's gorgeous. But her dancing strikes me as kinda Elaine Bettis herky-jerky. Guess I'm more of a Josey Shuffles kind of guy.

+Falcy Chead It's the only reason why I watch the videos.
Funny thing, some time ago I only liked her songs and couldn´t get over her visuals and moves :D :D Time corrected it though :)

If this song was realeased in 2016 i think it would be a big hit
true
The thing with Kimbra's music is that it's too advanced for the times.
Like in 2014, "90s Music" was just too experimental for me...and now in 2016 when I listen to current mainstream American pop, I feel like it's going to that direction.

I cannot figure out how this so extremely talented person is not all over the radio and yet we have to listen to Miley's & Justin's crap! How does that happen????
Very well said! Kimbra's music is so original and unique it doesn't follow the shock soft porn lyrics of other artists. I'm just waiting to hear her music featured in some hit Movie then she'll be on the radio.
Great comment jimo! Ive just found her myself.. Why has it took this long, She is something else. check out her live set a tsoundcheck.
MARYANNE269 Yeah I didnt discover her until the Gotye song myself a few years ago..and like most people, I thought it was Katy Perry! But did a little research and honestly I dont think there's anything of hers I havent heard already. But I do hope she keeps puttin out new stuff!
I know..funny huh! Just because this particular song sounds like the typical 15 yr old girl, bubble gum kinda music...yet I still love it as I do all her work!
I just found her today... Her face looks very iconic
Like a modern Betty Page. I can't get over her talent and voice. I found her around the time she made this because she a sung on that Gotye hit "Somebody That I Used to Know". I'm just catching up on her newer stuff, but I recommend searching for her (Live in studio) Grizzly Bears / Tears for Fears mashup.
Dont you mean 'ironic' ??
How would you describe the characteristics of an iconic face? :)

Exactly. I also return to listen to it periodically. She is a musical genius.
It's funny how I just found out about her and this song..........last year
I'm back after about 7-8 years and I'm very happy with what I'm hearing
This could be on the radio today and people would love it
No it couldnt. Ppl dont like artpop like kimbras music on mainstream. They prefer the ariana grandes and nicki minajs on the radio
If it suddenly became popular on tik tok it would get radio play.
I really loved the VOWS era. Such a good song.
it was so good. prefer it to the golden echo.
I think the vows era was more popish and the golden era was more experimental
TheMermanMusic definitely. i'm super curious to where this new album goes.
I started crying with this song. It could have been me she's singing to. Couple of years ago wouldn't have thought twice about this song. Where do you go now?
No, no, no, no, no, no!
Okay, I'll let myself out.
"Somebody that I used to know" came on the radio today, so I'm going on a Kimbra binge today. Why that song became an international success and not everything Kimbra has made is one of the great injustices in the world.
I'm grateful to the song for introducing me to her though.
I love how kimbra emphasized the men were so closed and restricted at the beginning
The color is meant to change and "open up your heart" for the men
I found it so symbolic for the man in pink to take off his blindfold
Live life without restrictions and see the world in color!
It symbolizes the world feminizing men to me. Women say they want men to act more like women, but reject them when they do. Also, she changes all the men to being girly, and then they get screwed over by becoming "cameo lovers" who are quickly abandoned after sacrificing their former selves. That said, I still like the song.
@@jotunthe11thhyman65 dude they're just gay
@@jotunthe11thhyman65 I'm basically just restating what Sakura Petals (OP) typed but with more words, but I don't think it's about the men becoming 'girly'/feminized as much as it is about the men opening themselves up to specific, 'softer' emotions, like love and sadness, something which is generally still acknowledged/felt/seen as unmasculine, weak, and in some sense 'bad' for men to do. This song and video more seems to show the men coming to reject, for their own good, the needlessly uptight standards which perhaps accompany 'masculinity'.
Ultimately, it's about not letting such stupid, insecure concepts control oneself and one's expressions of their true emotions. The painted nails, makeup, and exuberantly colored clothing (oh the horror!) are simply an emphatic way to symbolize their rejection being stereotypically cold, unexpressive men. It's all the more funny to me then seeing how plenty of people, including you, view this song as illustrating some sort of 'attack' on masculinity by 'feminizing' the men. The message of the song is ironically a plea for such critics to get over themselves.
...Or maybe they're just gay/bi dudes who have resisted coming to terms with their 'feminine' sexualities until Kimbra, The Opener of Closets came along, running with what Baby Game typed lol.
@@brendan1871 I disagree. I don't think that men dressed up in make-up/lipstick symbolizes love and sadness. Make-up is more feminine and I believe it seems much more likely that it symbolizes feminizing men.
Men already feel plenty of love and sadness. I would argue that men are more romantic than women. Also, men often feel plenty of sadness (as can be seen from men being more likely to commit suicide). I also don't believe men feel insecure about feeling love or sadness. Of course, feeling sadness is not the same as bawling in front of people, which is not masculine.
In this day and age, masculinity is seen as toxic. Women are generally attracted to masculine men, rather than feminine ones. Heterosexual men often find that if they express a lot of feminine qualities (such as emotional insecurities) to their love interest, the woman loses attraction for them. Additionally, men are typically happier if they are allowed to be masculine. In this sense, it can be considered bad for men to become feminine.
@@jotunthe11thhyman65 I think that she already said in interviews before that the song meant that your "loved one" (not specifically men) had a hard time openning up to their significant other about their emotions (not only happiness or sadness, but also secrets, anger, fear and many other things). Do some research my dude.
This women created a masterpiece she deserves way more recognition. This is amazing

You have no idea how many times I've listened to this. And I still pull nuggets from it
Here I am again, revisiting this gem in 2020. The album 'Vows' is an absolute masterpiece. Love her. 🤘
The way I'm reading this video is that it's about breaking away from the confines of masculinity. In the beginning you see Kimbra and her dancers and they're having a great colorful time and then it's contrasted with the guys in the stark black suits staying absolutely still. You can see that once the guys break away from the black (masculinity) and wear more feminine colors they start to dance and move their fingers to the beat.
Partially, Kimbra has stated herself that the song is about a friend who was feeling sad and disconnected from life and trying to bring colour back into this man's world.
+Patrick Mayer (Cheese Pills) Yeah, I see where you're coming from but this song isn't about bashing masculinity. Kimbra has said that her fashion and music videos are all quite feminine because that's just what she likes and I'm sure she didn't mean to go all grand theft tumblr lol. It was just meant to be her ideal representation of the song that SHE wrote herself.
+Patrick Mayer (Cheese Pills) funny enough though you're the only one that said anything that resembles a political war
+lanadelheyy I saw it as women trying hard to win over a man, which doesn't really happen but would be interesting for a change lol. as they changed color they were won over and thereby their lives were made fuller, enriched with color, by the connection with another human.
Patrick Mayer actually its "oh look a guy geting emotional! Amazing!"
