I like how the different damage types work, makes it hard to become over-reliant on any single weapon. Honestly its awesome how the game doesnt absolutely limit you to certain weapons/combat styles but makes you act tactically about them.
I end up usually carrying 2-3 melee weapons that I find complement each other well + a bow/arbalest, and then ooze/bile bombs and/or multiple spears for throwing if I'm preparing for a big fight. No single weapon is best for every situation (though swords make a pretty good jack-of-all-trades imo.) So it's good to have a variety at the ready

I'm a big fan of that too. I think it's one of the greatest strengths of the game.

Something I don't think was mentioned is that lightning damage is the only type of elemental damage that contributes to staggering along with physical! Lightning (along with frost damage) deals 1.5x damage to wet targets (they have to be at least waist high in water to get the visual dripping cue, they can't just be rained on like us vikings). This also is a great boon to staggering with the himmin afl as well as its DPS.
Something really neat as well is that staggerlocking enemies (re-staggering enemies over and over til they die in a single combo) is much easier than most people think. When enemies are staggered, their stagger bar doesn't reset, it just starts to deplete by 20% per second, and so using the atgeir middle mouse and then following up with the normal atgeir moveset we are able to staggerlock a great deal of enemies! This includes: the troll with a bronze atgeir, starred draugr elite and fuling with the bronze atgeir, fuling berserkers and lox with the black metal but also the iron atgeir at decent levels, seekers with the bronze atgeir or above (seriously), and most notably at the moment seeker soldiers with the himmin afl at fairly high polearm levels, less when said soldier is wet.
I can't quite stress how good swapping from an eitr to stamina weapon when one resource is low and the other isn't, given the right situation. The swap from the Staff of Embers to Himmin Afl (and bow + atgeir in the earlier biomes although that combo is just stam) is incredibly strong... Also for some reason along with all the other amazing properties the Embers has it also has 0 aggro radius (so does the Staff of Frost), so you can use a boom stick for ranged stealth strats lol (provided you have good mistlands visibility). If they don't patch this out then actually using the Embers in the Ashlands for said strategies could be really good - or depending on the grouping/resistances or weaknesses the Huntsman bow with its 4 meter aggro radius compared to other bows' 8m could see a return to amazing form. We'll have to see.

  • @AeyakS
    @AeyakS Před 2 měsíci +13

I like the spear a lot in the early game, because of how far you can go without ever having to return to base to repair at a special/upgraded station. It also has a really low stamina cost, high attack rate, and ranged option that made trolls possible to fight. However, the later grade spears were mostly disappointing because they came with very low durability, and unreasonable repair criteria. (Which I understand that all weapons have the same repair criteria at that tier, but they compensated through durability and higher damage per hit)
Mace types have been my favorite so far, although they're not perfect for combos versus lightweight enemies because of knockback, they hold up unexpectedly well versus heavy enemies regardless of resistances. It was very refreshing to be able to craft the porcupine and fully upgrade it barely 15 minutes into and after the first Plains expedition.
The most important thing for the weapons is pretty much just how easy it is to obtain and craft. Maces take the cake because they rarely need upgrades even in the next level like the Bronze and Iron maces or Frostner. Then Porcupine has the easiest craft out of its tier weapons, plus no next lvl upgrade requirements.

Quite a few people have made arguments for spears and yours is no exception. Maybe I am sleeping on them.

One thing the video could do with is an explanation of WHY Spirit is the oddball of the elemental damage types: Only Undead-type mobs can take Spirit damage. Nothing else. If you're going to trudge through the Swamps, Spirit goes from least useful to very useful. Likewise that burn effect brings the a fully upgraded Silver Sword up to par with a fully upgraded Black Metal Sword (if swords are your jam) against Yagluth since he has the undead flag set.
Another feather in the Mistwalker's cap is in addition to the utility from Frost and Spirit damage, it lives up to its description of "seems to slice through the mists" as it does push the Mistlands fog back in a 6 to 8-ish meter diameter bubble around your character, making it the only equippable way to do so other than the Bound Wisp... So after you die, grabbing your stuff and pulling your sword will give you a little bit of visibility while you try to get into a spot to get your other gear back on again.

I actually love the spears... Especially in mountains. You just have to get good at aiming with the secondary throw option for enemies that are too small to stab or flying enemies, as well as destroying fenris hair drapes or bodypiles...
Put youre cursor a head above what you're aiming at for distance or height, and directly on target for level or down hill...
For things on the floor aim at the floor just in front of the object and throw.
Just be aware when throwing the spear and picking it back up again to imediately fight with,
if youre inventory is full you wont auto pickup the spear and this may cause you to panic.
The ability to throw from range, do big damage and charge in to quickly pick up the spear and deliver a quick few stabs all while being a light and nimble weapon and able to hold a shield all at the same time...
Is to me OP as hell when you get good at it.

What is the strongest weapon in this game, i would say it's *skoll and hati*
    -No movement speed penalty
    -Low stamina consumption
    -Cheap to craft
    -Very fast attack speed
    -High damage
-Has x6 bonus backstab damage to unalerted enemies
-Can 2 shot normal fulings and seekers
-Can 1 shot almost any unalerted mob in the game with secondary attack
-Can be combined with extended/power combo for even higher DPS
Of course it's has some cons like short range, can't be held together with a shield makes it hard to parry strong attacks. But with me, all those stats are just incredible.

Not being able to use shield with S&H really is hardly a downside with their massive parry bonus. Since enemies mostly have same attack timings, it's really easy to master parry and shield will just slow you down. Fenris armor+S&H is a one of the best armor+weapon combo if not the best.

Soloing mage is annoying in mistlands because he can be easily stunlocked by only two seekers. He simply lacks enemy control features - parry is weak and the shielded skeleton is also weak and getting torn in seconds. The only tool it has is his DPS, but it is not enough either in many situations, especially when there are ≥2 seekers, not mentioning he is useless against gjall.
They should've made a precise one-target lightning bolt staff that staggers instead of a useless frostbite SMG (but I understand that it is maybe made for support role in co-op)

I love how pretty much any weapon type in Valheim can be on par with its peers if the player is adapted to its fighting style.
When I first played the game I really overlooked knives bc so many games make them just weaker swords, but goddamn are they awesome in Valheim
I typically do swords as primary / atgeirs secondary bc it seems to be quite versatile and decent in most situations, but I enjoy finding new combat styles/pairings. Knife primary / spears secondary works well for a more mobile fighter while clubs / battleaxes makes for a good tank/crowd-control build (though requires more skill with timing and stamina use). Ppl tend not to like tower shields but I find them really helpful in close quarters like crypts, where you're not missing much by losing speed.

    • @a_pirate1434
      @a_pirate1434 Před 3 měsíci +1

@@SpazzyjonesGaming Tower shields definitely require a different combat style than bucklers, which are more versatile. I have to be very selective about when I'm choosing to equip the shield - most of the time it's better unselected, higher mobility than holding buckler but shield isn't needed, then selecting it when I need to tank a lot of damage, and it's a much surer way to absorb damage than bucklers when you need to. Definitely not ideal in places like the Mistlands, but bone tower and serpent shields served me well through much of Valheim's progression fighting that way.

    • @a_pirate1434

      Tradeoff with tower shields imo:
+ better mobility w/o shield when you need it
+ better blocking w/ shield when you need it

      - less mobility w/shield
      - can't always predict when you'll need a shield or not (weak against ambushes)

Shortly after starting out I settled on atgeirs and ended up sleeping on a lot of these good weapons. Thing is, when taking a more defensive approach, secondary on a polearm is unparalleled for emergency crowd control and stun locking larger enemies. Also keeping them a a distance where they can't hit you but you can hit them feels good. They suck in rough terrain though
This was the case till mistlands, where combo of rough terrain and the insane stamina drain on the Afl forced me to reconsider how I played till that point. My go to now is the mistwalker plus carapace shield combo, afl for open terrain and mandatory arbalest for those floating nutsack moments - it feels like a hit-scan weapon and bolts are cheaper than arrows for some reason plus you can preload in anticipation of an opening. Jotunn is a no-brainer as it's a tool first and weapon second.
But nothing beats the satisfaction of turning black forest or swamp into your own personal bare fisted fight club.

Sleeping on spears. I used spears my first playthrough regardless of weakness up to the Queen. Using a little more strat then just meat mash the enemy, the spear is superior as it gives you TONS of cheese options (Step into the infested mines, everything gets stuck on the first ledge, toss spear, pick up, repeat) as well as just gives you different strats. When we first moved into the Mistlands, the bugs constantly killed us but kiting the seekers and tossing the spear was an instant win that kept me out of range of attacks that would 2 shot me and 1 shot my archer/teammate. We never killed one of the flying bugs with arrows because it takes so long but lemme toss that spear 4 times and oh hes dead. • @RationalOrc
    @RationalOrc Před 3 měsíci +5

I'm actually super disappointed by Krom (and I was excited about it pre-mistlands too). It does more dmg than a one handed sword, but it has a slower attk speed, so you're just forfeiting the benefits of shield without really gaining any DPS. And it doesn't have any elemental damage which is really important in the mistlands. And it has the standard muli-target penalty which most two-handed weapons don't have (and also one handed swords as well). Overall, I find it very underwhelming in performance.
The ember staff gets my vote as the best Queenslayer weapon. It's basically a ranged sledgehammer and it's bonkers how good it is.

Here are my favorite Weapons for each Stage of the game
Meadows: I like Club and Flint Spear the most here, not much Meadow weapon stuff to talk about.
Black Forest: There are 3 Great weapons for me - Bronze Axe is a Solid weapon, and can cut Oak and Birch Trees for the amazing Finewood Bow, and Bronze Atgeir is pretty good too.
    Swamp: I R O N M A C E
Mountain: Flesh Rippers are really good when you use them with Fenris armor, But Draugr Fang+Poison arrows and Frostner are the True best.
Plains: Draugr Fang and Blackmetal Atgeir in my opinion are the best for normal plains, but Frostner is by far the best for Yagluth for sure.
Mistlands: Choosing a best weapon from the Mistlands is really difficult. But out of all of the options, I think I would have to say the best is Mistwalker. It is a great Choice for everything in the Mistlands, (except gjalls ofc), Has frost damage, so it slows them down, and it's just really powerful, especially a good choice for when you just entered the Ashlands.
Ashlands (I have not used every Ashland weapon yet so if I forget something OP let me know): Thundering Berserker axes are absolutely broken. I can kill Morgens in seconds with these things, they do stupid damage, and they are hella fast, this was a very easy choice.

Just to emphasize how *S T R O N G* the Staff of Embers really is, it's still incredibly useful even in the *Ashlands.* You know, the one place in the game you'd think it'd be terrible for. That 120 blunt damage is no joke, even when the fire portion is resisted. It's like having a magical hand cannon.

    In my opinion:
Spears are way better than what people say, especially when you get used to throwing and positioning on uneven terrain, their dps is really nice and crafting them requires minimal materials. Would love to have some kind of "special" spear in Ashlands. 8/10
Daggers are slept on, they put out most dps but aren't really that efficient for beginners, hence they get overlooked. Abyssal razor works wonders even in Mountains. 8/10
Clubs are mechanically top-tier because least resistance, you get access to both single and dual handed weapons, and they get Frostner and Porcupine. For me they tend to get boring and make the game boring at some times. As a weapon type 10/10
Swords for me get almost no playtime, because you get slash from axe and knife, but that is rarely ever needed in my playstyle. If you wanted, you really could make just bow, sword and shield and rock those whole game with no problem (not counting bonemass but resistance is neglected if you kill it with silver sword) it's a perfect jack of trades. 5/10
Axes for me serve purely for woodchopping, and i've tried only once 2-handed axes and they felt massively underwhelming with huge material costs, massive stamina consumption, movement speed penalty and unjustified dmg for all negative effects. 1 handed are too slow for efficient combat too. 3/10
Atgeirs are very strong, mobile, and get best secondary attack in game. Downside for them is most resisted damsge type and huge stam usage. Works wonders both in solo and group but feel boring to use sometimes. 7/10
Bows just work, but for me aren't essential every time. 9/10
Sorry for big rant, i just love this game and hope to see some tweaking in dmg/speed/resistances so that axes and swords would see more use, i feel like sometimes the game pushes ypu too much to use mace.

    Two things:
I think ice staff is objectively the best weapon (in mistlands) It has the block armor level of a full iron banded shield, and has the highest dps in game, if you pair it up with the eitr regen potion, you will be able to constantly shoot as the potions regenerates more eitr than you use.
Second thing, I think putting only endgame weapons in the top 3 is redundant, at that point a player is already in their endgame.
Here is my recommendations for every biome as a player who has 2954 hours in this game at the time of this comment
Meadows (Stone age) : The Crude bow, really good overall damage against the enemies you're fighting, but given its stone age, every weapon here would do
Black Forest (Bronze age) Bronze Atgeir: Good damage, good block armor, highest melee range, the only thing resistant to pierce damage is the skeletons in the black forest, best weapon to take out trolls with, just outshines the rest of the weapons here
Swamps (Iron age) The Mace. Good damage, good knockback, the only iron age< viable weapon to take out bonemass with.
Mountains (Silver age) The Frostner, this is a weapon that you can use all the way to the mistlands, with its only weakness being the moder. The frost damage on it is nuts and it outshines every single weapon in the mountains
Plains (Black metal age) The Porcupine...what can I say, insane damage having 2 damage types, high knockback, It is INSANELY cheap to make, once you craft it, you need like 12 iron and 12 needles (approximately) to upgrade it to level 4
Mistlands (Eitr age) Blood shield, This staff is nuts, at lv 0 blood magic skill it gives you a whopping 200 hp shield, at level 25 it gives you a 325 hp shield, and at lv 100 it gives you a 700 hp shield.
Oh! if that didn't sound appealing enough, did you know that under the blood shield you can parry any single attack in the game? With every weapon or shield, with every armor?
Its nuts, and is the only weapon I think will be truly viable in every age going forward even when Valheim is finished and mistlands will become a midgame age.

When you have to weigh in range (spears) and mobility (knife/fenris) a lot of people just favor big numbers instead because it doesn't require as much skill expression. That's _totally_ valid though, because even though fenris+knife is optimal for a veteran player... it would be a horrible plan for a new player.

Very helpful, you put a lot of work into this so thank you! I’ve played bout 10 hours and have a question that I can’t find an answer for anywhere so maybe someone can help: I’m on PC with mouse/keyboard default controls and except when using a club, I cannot block/parry with shield. So with a club and small shield equipped I can use LMB to swing weapon and then RMB to bring up shield to block/parry and everything works perfectly to defeat enemies, but if I have axe and small shield equipped and click RMB to bring up shield to block/parry I just do an overhead axe swing instead of bringing up shield to block/parry, if I equip spear and small shield and click RMB I throw the spear! Sorry this is so long but trying to explain clearly as I can, so how do I block/parry with shield while using an axe or spear?! Thanks

      @SpazzyjonesGaming  Před 2 měsíci

Appreciate that man. It did take a long time.
Interesting, so the downward axe attack and the spear throw are the 'secondary' attacks for those weapon classes. For me, the secondary attacks are bound to my middle mouse button (the scroll part of the mouse) and block/parry is bound to RMB. I'm wondering if somehow your secondary attack is bound to RMB? Thats my only guess. let me know if that the case or not and comment back if that doesn't work and I'll do my best to help you out!

Audio is fine. Scripting and editing is great.
Fav weapon question would be a good community question that you can then make a video about the community's opinion. But to answer it here, honestly I dont have one. I Liked the mistwalker a lot. I do like playing with a spear because it has a quick attack rate. Im also biased bc I once lost my gear on the mountain near a spawn with starred wolves. After many many failures, the only gear that worked on the recovery mission was a spear and tower shield.

    Feedback:
I think the audio was fine.
    Things I Like:
    - The black marble pit.
    - The summary at the beginning.
    - How you showed all weapons in categories.
    - All shared information, really nice and interesting.
    Areas of Improvement:
    - Didnt like the fact you forgot to add the black metal knife.
    - A few other mistakes in editing. My recommendation is to make sure to review the final video before uploading.
    - If you havent uploaded yet, record and edit whatever you missed. I know it takes time but it makes you look more professional this way.
    - When going over each category, I don't like that you used an image of the weapons instead of just looking at them from the same angle while the game plays. There's no animation or no effects even though many weapons have them.
Also, you forgot to mention the Spirit Walker removes fog around you in a small radius (hence the name). I know it's not combat related, but think that is relevant.
    Favorite Weapons:
    - Im a sucker for swords and frost so my sword is The Mistwalker for sure.
    - I also REALLY like magic so the Elemental Staves are my fav magic weapons, Frost over Embers in damage type but Embers over Frost in mechanics (1 huge blast instead of DPS).
    - I also really like the hammers, specifically the Demolisher. It just feels BADASS. Frostner is a good 1H mace for when im running shield + weapon (favorite non-magic setup).
Hard to pick one, I like 1 and 2 a lot, 3 being close by.

Interesting. Not a fan of the weapon overlays. I can appreciate that. Gameplay is king! I gave the images because I wanted to showcase the stats/craft costs but I easily could have done that overplayed with gameplay as well.
Oof. Dumb of me not to mention the light source of the mistwalker. Very good point
Lastly, I think you have great taste in weapons! Your favs are a lot like mine!

its the best weapon because having it equipped fixes your vikings damned hunchback posture.

  • @Rabijeel
    @Rabijeel Před 2 měsíci +1

For me, it is not only about Damage Type vs Resistances, it is also the ability to apply that Damage efficiently.
Tage for example the Swamp - most creatures are vulnerable to blunt there - yet, a Sword and Shield is a very good Option. I prefer the Serpent shield, as Serpents can be killed quite easy by just luring them close to the Swamp and let then get killed by the Leeches in the Water.
Seriously, Serpents are overrated a lot and yopu loose all respect for them as soon as you know em - so the Iron for that Shield is the harder Recource to come by.
Thus, I start out with a Bronze Sword and a Bronze Buckler maxed out as well as full Troll Armor at max when entering the Swamp.
The Sword allows to reach the Leeches while keeping out their reach. The Draugr you can counterblock or even just outmaneuver without rollypoly and then stab them with the secondary as well.
Blobs may be a little annoying, but their direct Damage is neglectible, so Poison resist Potions and good Bufffood mitigates that close tu nullifying it.
That leaves the Abominations - and that is where the Swords thrust Attack shines as well as the fast little hits. You can not only lure them to flames, you can easily evade their Attacks and then thrust the belly to make pretty good damage in a pretty safe Way - having them on "Farming Status" from the beginning.
All of this is not really possible due to the slower attack speeds of Clubs and Maces.
As soon as I have Iron, the Serpent shield replaces the Buckler - if I want active parry I just use the Sword itself.
But the Piercing Resist coming along the serpent shield is too valueable to let it go - and you can easy equip and unequip it when needed/not needed.
The only Weapon that comes close in "usefulness" aka has a decent Damage application in its use is the Atgeir, which makes up for that lack of defense with a supreme reach and also the AoE-Damage application.
Still, in Multiplayer we always split up the Types - one "Hammers", one "Pierces" and one "Slashes" - last one main Tanks while the Archer often uses a Mace secondary.
And that is my second Weapon I always use - the Bow.
Sword and Bow is basically all you need to come by pretty good and is pretty easy to use.

@@SpazzyjonesGaming 14 stamina can be very painful for a new player, who mostly uses health food and probably still has issues with stamina control too when reaching Mistlands. But as you get more experienced, you tend to switch from health to stamina food anyway, so it evens out eventually. Also, with experience you use your stamina more wisely, less of it on movement. I like Draugr Fang very much, it is my favourite bow too, but specifically in Mistlands I prefer the Spinesnap just because of the higher damage it deals (saves quite a lot of arrows too).
But it boils down to the point that you can use any weapon in Valheim with good success once you really get the hang of it, so it depends mostly on your preferences and playstyle. I myself dislike both blunt and two-handed weapons, but I can deal with the enemies as effectively using other weapons just slightly adjusting my playstyle. That's the beauty of freedom in Valheim.
