Taoiseach 'clearly not listening' to UHL safety concerns - Mary Lou McDonald

  • Over the last few weeks, Lunchtime Live has been highlighting the conditions at the Limerick hospital, which is regularly the most overcrowded in the country.
A protest was held at the hospital this month as the Health Minister Stephen Donnelly and HSE Chief Bernard Gloster were visiting.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has described UHL’s Emergency Department as a ‘war zone’ - and Lunchtime Live has been flooded with emails from patients about the conditions all this week.
Limerick woman Teri Coffey told the show that her mother was admitted to the Emergency Department six months ago today after suffering a heart attack.
She said she will “never, ever forget” what happened next for as long as she lives.
“When we got to the hospital, there was no room for them to actually bring Mum through,” she said.
“So the ambulance driver - it was a bit like the scene from an officer and a gentleman - he picked Mum up and carried her in his arms to a trolley.
“The place was absolutely jammers. It's just something I will never forget.

Let's just take a moment to recognise that Harris' first response to her question and point was "well we appointed someone that's going to find staff we can blame" I dont side with Sinn Fein on any level but this weasel has to go!

The HSE budget is up 70% and an extra 50,000 staff in 10 years. It doesn’t ever seem to make a difference. We have the 2nd most expensive health system in the world after the US with appalling outcomes. How about work practices, inflexibility, no increased productivity? It can’t all be the governments fault.

The whole hospital system is dysfunctional. It needs a high level consultant to go in and redesign the way things are done. More beds, more staff, more hospitals needed.

At what point do they realise that they need to stop. At what point do they realise that the other hospitals that previously had emergency departments need to be brought back again to 24hr Ed service. 41%, great what do you want, a pat on the back. The situation at that hospital will not end with this avoidable tragedy. It will take something far, far worse before what the cats & dogs on the street know will happen, happens & then and only then will actual, decisive action be taken.

Allow professionals from other countries, but residing in Ireland, to work immediately based on their original diplomas, without undergoing humiliating certification and qualification confirmation. There are so many of them out there. Often, these professionals have more practice and experience to meet the demand for specialists.
