      Bright or lighter colored clothes act as a highlight against dark skin. It brings the dark skin out.
      Dark against dark? Ah! Boring.
      It's also nice when some "bling" is added to it. ex. Nice watch, necklace, earrings.
      A smile with nice white teeth against a dark face is also beautiful sight.

    The darkest person I ever ever saw, was an African man, and believe me, this man looked regal - he was black and proud and if you saw him walk, you would know what I mean. He was a contrast,- he wore all white, but was as black as ebony. He looked really nice.

This man was a confident man, who felt comfortable in his skin, and any observer could tell immediately. he was extremely tall, extremely dark, but wore white - as if to say "Look at me - don't you wish you could look like me?"

    I'm 36 years old and still can't seem to wrap my head around the concept of mistreating someone because of dark skin. Dark skin is so beautiful...especially with the contrast between the skin and make-up/clothing when bright colors are worn. The only thing I can conclude is that for those who discriminate against dark skin people (or black ppl) are very insecure and feel intimidated by the superior traits/genetics/DNA of melanin...it's just pure jealousy and insecurity. Anyway, I digress lol.

    Hi Tabitha,
    My family is from north Uganda and so my skin is very dark and I've grown up in South London. Since year 7 I've literally experienced what you have. Just everyday comments like: "blick", "burnt" "blaaaaccckkk", and like you I just never knew when they were gonna strike, maybe on the bus, in the hallway, in class, in a shop, at the bus stop, crossing the road. I had this constant paranoia when I was outside of the house, I was anxious and scared every day. One of my first experiences of it in year 7 was at the beginning of the school year, I was lost and couldn't find the maths block, when I got close to the classroom there were a pack of these black year 11 girls and they didn't say anything they just stared until I had walked past then one shouts "YA BLICK!" *and the corridor filled with their roars of laughter. When I got to maths I couldn't even read what was on the board or hear what the teacher was saying my eyes were just completely full of tears. I have a million stories from my teen years, and I honestly struggled, to get out of bed, to speak, to stop shaking, to look people in the eyes, I don't think people realise that their one comment is like 1/5 comments I'm gonna receive that day that might just push me off the edge, I'd have days where I honestly thought 'okay, when I get home today I'm just gonna kill myself'. I'd spend all my weekly lunch money on skin lightening products that didn't work, some even peeled my skin off. I'm in a better place now, final year of a predominantly white university, but I haven't entirely healed, I suppose something I really needed to hear was the story of someone else who can empathise and for that I thank you, I think this video helps other girls and boys who are struggling. I think you're really brave and beautiful, keep spreading your positivity

    It was always baffling for me growing up because the black people in my class were the ones who had an issue with the shade of black I am. Every other race in the class could care less, now that I'm matured, I feel bad for them for their self hate and realize it had nothing to do with me at all. I hope they eventually grew out that stupid mentality although I doubt it. Great video !

    That blick word is pathetic and people have called me that disgusting made up word so many times while i was growing up. I can totally relate to your pain and everything you have experienced as a dark skinned woman. People have shouted at me in the streets too and laughed in my face!! My tone is the same as yours, it just looks a little lighter because of the flash. Oh my i totally relate about the "light skin pride" that is so pathetic. People love to compare. Girl you are sooo beautiful. I am sorry you had to experience that amount of hate and racial abuse you have experienced. When you were telling your story it reminded me of my experiences. You seem so kind. You gave that somalian boy a hug. How wonderful. i have heard a lot of black people say they do not like to sit in the sun too and call each other "blick". A lot of black people need to learn to rephrase things accordingly. Also,that girl you approached in Primark was delusional and you caught her out. If anything, we dark skinned people look amazing with bright colours lmao. I wear them all the time! You have sunkissed skin and wonderfully unique features. Loved the story and I am so glad that you are allowing yourself to continue to shine. All those experiences made you stronger like it made me. 💕

      @saidabdulkadir9791 Před 8 lety +2

      Tabitha, i must say i am intrigued by your personal life story, and truth be told comeing from a Somalian, i tell you in regards to that Somalian boy you huged, the thing is he just like many african boys from different parts of africa are forcefeed from early to like lightskinned girls and even at times worship lightskin girls, even if them Somalians are so-called blick themselves the Somalian boys, but Somalian girls in the diaspora are acctualy lightskinned and mixed heritage for the most part and more priviliged then the Darkskinned majority in their own country the under-privileged Darkskin majority, so remember there are 3 types of Somalians, the Oldest of them beeing the Blick a.k.a Black skinned ones, then the 2nd oldest(the current majority) the dark-brown chocolate toned, and then the NEW somalians = the lightskinend high yellow-skin tone ones, obviously its the same Epidemic with all african tribes worldwide including in Africa and the Diasporan african communities.... im 1 skin shade or to Darker than you, as im considered the Proto-type of my tribe the So'mali.... so you to shouldnt judge all because of a few brainwashed ones that are brainwashed to worship whitness or lightness... anyways remember the Darker the Skin the Deeper The Root's like Tupac used to say, the Blacker the berry the sweeter the juice... so dont take it bad, my younger cousins also call me black, even if they're just 1 or 2 shades lighter than me.... anyways sister Tabitha, from Uganda Acholi tribe sister, remember What doesent kill you, only makes you stringer, so start believing that... Stay Steadfast sister...... Patience is a virtue

    • @KushQueen9
      @KushQueen9 Před 8 lety +5

      It seems like that somali boy wasn't the first. They need to be educated because a somali boy did the same to me. Those yellow skin toned ones are usually mixed anyways and even then they never mock others who are darker. I do not understand the basic below average logic that some Africans have.

    • @saidabdulkadir9791
      @saidabdulkadir9791 Před 8 lety +3

      yeh i agree , the logic in africans, unfortunately most african s is a secretly self hateing epidemic, and yess offcourse all people who are africans that are lightskinned yellowishare obviously mixed and not properly from the tribe they claim to be part of, weather they be Swahili, nigerian, Somali, Acholi ugandan, Sodanese, and ethiopian and south african yellowbones, and ect ect, basically the Darkskinned majoity that are under-privileged to leave their homeland back in africa are beeing overlooked, and demonized and hidden from mainstream... but Truth shall allways prevail, with educated minds, like yours and mine, my sister... anyway, Peace and love from a so-called Blick Somalian.... Blessings

      Thanks for your humble words sister, its just that unfortunately the half-blooded mixed ones amongst our tribes, get the say more than the fullblooded ones such as myself and others, meaning they unfortunately stand out, so we should ignore them and focus on likewise kind and truthful hearts such as mine and yours and this sister Tabitha on the video... meaning Great minds think Alike, so remember dont let the minority mixed breeds of our tribes, make you generalise and judge, just because they're confused.com... so we as the smart ones of our tribes should stick togheter and have our voices and opinions, heard, rather than vice=versa, Anyway, its a plessure to have communicated with a innteligent sister such as urself.... i just tought that id let you know that these mixed breeds gives all of us a bad name as Darkskinned Africans, because of their envious confused.com attitudes towards Darkskinned Africans a.k.a Full-blooded Africans... well anyway Peace and Love sister Abei ...

    I think we as a people need to spend time teaching our children how to value themselves, skin colour, hair texture & heritage.
    I have had a few issues in London. But for the most part, I have not had too much of an issue. In my 32 years of life I have prob had about 4 issues.
    My mum is very dark, I am only slightly lighter than her. But I was taught from a very young age to value myself. I have never ever had a white doll or barbie.
    Any issues I have had I nipped them in a bud. I will be damned if anyone is going to talk to me with disrespect.
    Teach your kids to be strong, teach them to fight back against stereo types even within their own community.
    My niece is 9 and has small pencil sized locs (she wanted to be like her grandma!) and they TRIED to tease her at school. She quickly put the bullies in their place.

I certainly did not feel as beautiful as my lighter skinned friends/family members while growing up because beauty was matched with how light your skin was. It is sad when a child does not see people who look like them considered beautiful and powerful... But I truly believe that times are changing as we see more exposure of dark and beautiful women on the screen and even on CZcams! I came across your page because I thought you were beautiful and powerful in how you express yourself. You make me very proud and I just want to say Dark is lovely!! Keep it up my sister ;p

    First of all you are stunning!!!
    Colonialism and their introduction of white supremacy has done a number on people all over the world. Wherever a country was colonized by Europeans, you will find colorism, be it India, China, Africa etc. White skin was established as the superior standard and the further your skin was from this standard, meant you were less than. People from these countries began to internalize this and turn on each other. I always explain this to people when it comes up. It is actually their internalized inferiority complex, born from forced white supremacy, that makes them dislike dark skin.
    When I was growing up in London, I didn't really experience this. I guess because at that time (80's and early 90's) there was much less variations in shade? I remember there being far more darker skinned people, than there were lighter shades. At that time, racial abuse came from whites. I found my mixed raced friends experienced much more racism than darker skinned people did, which was also wrong.
    It's so refreshing when I hear someone who feels like me. I do not resent my dark skin. I actually love and cherish it as special. I do feel sad that colonialism has left such a mark that we feel the need to turn on each other in order to feel better about ourselves.
    Thanks for sharing. I will definitely check out some of your other videos. xx

    When kids act different to people of color esp. darker-skinned people, it's definitely IGNORANCE .. Now, whether it's negative or positive depends on what they've been taught or heard.
    Some are curious ..and many are colonially-raped..
    Sadly this behavior is predominantly practiced among Black people and Black communities.
    When we teach our lil black girls from the get-go , they get that great sense of pride and confidence " in their skin" no matter " complexion high
    Or complexion low, or in between

      @Charlie Charlie colorism is a lot more than just being someones 'preference' and being a dark skinned women comes with more problems than not being someone's 'preference.'
      Would you describe the behavior of the people who bullied her in the video as acting on a 'preference', or treating her badly bc the think their is something bad abt her darskin? Did people call her blick just Bc she wasnt their preference or bc they think its something wrong with having dark skin?
      You hear the way rappers degrade darkskinned women, that's not preference... They could just say they like light skinned girls and end it there if it's just 'preference.' why feel the need to bring darkskinned girls into it and talk abt how awful and not good enough they all are unless they actually believe it *gasp. Thats colorism.
      across cultures darker skinned people are treated worse and are seen as inferior and lighter skinned people are uplifted and seen as superior. Thats not preference, its colorism. Its in judicial system, education system, media, the cause of bullying and skin bleaching, there are even cases of families who treat the lighter children better than the dark ones, but I guess its just 'preference' and because they 'prefer' one child over the other.

      @Charlie Charlie haha haha, it has happened repeatedly. Also u didnt answer my questions but ok. What abt the casting calls in the 1960s that specially called for lighterskinned women to play black roles? I even saw one from back then that said to cast lighter skinned women for the roles of pretty black women and dark skinned women for the roles of maids. I even watched a youtube video today that showed the casting for straight outta compton that SPECIFICALLY called for light-skinned and biracial women to play the roles of "fine girls" and darkskinned women as "poor girls." And if its "so hard" for lightskinned and biracial women to get roles, how come theyre the only ones cast to play the majority of black women now?

    I remember growing up, my sister derided my step mother and I for having dark skin, but neither of my parents ever rebuked her or punished her for making such foul remarks. I said one thing about her light skin, and I was yelled at. It taught me that it was ok to bash dark skinned persons, but light skin was a gem to be protected. So whenever my cousins made degrading statements, whenever my friends ridiculed dark skin, and whenever strangers degraded dark skin, I sat silently, accepting that as a dark skin person I am only worthy of insults and degradation, and any compliments were the result of pity. Now that I've educated myself, I now know that this thinking is the result colonization and white supremacy. Many Black ppl, and ppl from other racial groups have appropriated colorism, and I think it's time we reclaim our worth. We are not inherently inferior, and we do not and must not succumb to Eurocentric standards. We have to love our dark skin

    Tabitha, your video was inspiring and I appreciate your honesty. As a black woman, I know what you are talking about. I have personally witness it with some of my family and in the black community. Yes, colorism originated from white supremacist but blacks have owned it and given it LIFE for decades. When I meet blacks who think this way, I find them be extremely uneducated and concrete thinkers. They lack abstract thinking ability and are conformist. If I could come back tomorrow a different complexion, I would love yours or Lupita’s complexion. It is flawless!!!
    My mom helped me love my complexion and helped me evolve in my thought pattern despite the ignorance I was surrounded by. My mom is much lighter than me and people (almost always black) would often make comments about how beautiful her color is. She always complimented my complexion and taught me the beauty of the various hues of dark skin.
    I am sure people tell you this all the time, but you are very beautiful and your features are also beautiful!! I am glad that your intelligence, strength and beauty prevailed. Also, If you are somewhat drawn to white men because they did not berate you when you are younger, that is your prerogative.

    I have always hated this "light skin" vs "dark skin" stuff because it just pits black people against each other. We are just segregating each other. I am black with some spanish so I appare orangey but not "dark" so I haven't had people call me bad names for being too dark but I have had some people say that I'm "not black" but rather "orange" (???) but I remember when I was younger I was immensely jealous of biracial people. No matter what shade of black you are there is always pressure to be lighter, even for people who are biracial. Two bad experiences I've had were 1) when my younger sister was born. Because she had a different mother who was half Native American she could pass as biracial (like white x black) and a lot of my family members praised her for it which made me feel uncomfortable and 2) when my friend, who is black/indian kept insisting that I was darker than her, which didn't bother me because she thought I was darker but because she cared so much about being lighter, like it made her better. She even compared are arms. The funniest part is that we are the same skin tone.

    In the US I've heard the term "blurple" used to describe a very dark black person. Blick is a new one on me. I actually like women of color as a rule but I've always had a soft spot for black women. I'm "white" and when I have dated outside my race I've always dated a black woman. I wouldn't turn away a woman from another background but I just get along with black women pretty well. I find them easier to talk with. I've dated darker black women out of personal preference because I like the look. It really does bother me when black people color code themselves but it doesn't surprise me. Internalized racism is a thing after all.
    Glad to hear you've gotten past the abuse and hopefully people treat you with the respect you deserve.

    Yes girl!!! I am dark skinned too and never had problems with being dark skinned. I am so GLAD that you have articulated the difference between being hurt because one is dark skinned and being hurt because others try to hurt you because you are dark skinned. Keep being beautiful and proud. I love light skin being happy about their skin. I love dark skin being happy about their skin. Be happy, that's what I am about.

    Ditto! I share many of your experiences too and have grown to feel the same. I've cried many times and NOT because of what a white person said but, because of what another black person have. I do believe that if DARK SKIN wasn't so precious the self tanning industry wouldn't be doing close to a billion dollars in revenue(possibly over). People sometimes try to pass off their insecurities.......I DO LOVE ME IN MY VERY DARK SKIN! YOU ARE GORGEOUS!!

    Nice video. Your story was very interesting and I'm glad that you're in a place now where you have accepted and love your skin. I myself have experienced colorism/racism, but kind of due to opposite reasons. I'm Somali myself and I was bullied for having lighter skin. Girls at my school would constantly insult Somalis out of the blue, calling them dark-skinned etc. and this one girl would constantly talk about how she was lighter than some Somalis and how my colour and hers were not that different. I couldn't understand their preoccupation with skin colour at the time and the experience made me look into why they behaved that way. That's when I learned about colorism and the effect it has on people. It's honestly a disease and it's tragic that it has now become so common amongst people of colour. I can't understand how we can bash each other, when we get enough of that in society in general. Skin bleaching has become a billion dollar industry and it's sickening. I hope for a day when we can all accept our God-given beauty, in all shades :)

    This is so good I wanted to comment again. I am working a memoir that talks about my personal experiences being dark skin and the way you articulate your story is inspiring. Your growth is amazing, you are empowering people to follow your example and embrace themselves.

    I went through the same things! You are beautiful! Don't you ever in your life get that twisted! Now that I am grown, I can see why I was hated so. I love everything and everybody! I speak well, I love to learn, I do well. Those things alone make others jealous! When I was younger, I felt jealous, but I prayed and asked God to take that feeling away and out of me. I'm never jealous, but I do get angry because I thought that at some point people would change.
