  • Let's explore Fender's first Custom Shop, in Japan! We unpack the history of the select group of craftspeople that produced Fender Japan's ExTrad (Extra Traditional) line, a made-to-order custom line of instruments marketed exclusively to the Japanese domestic market. We cover all the essentials, from premium features and finishes to component dating.

Beginning in their 1992 catalog, Fender Japan would also expand their Custom Edition-branded lineup to include a unique range of instruments beyond the ExTrad line. We'll be covering this in more depth in a future MIJ Supplemental installment!

Did Fujigen ever make navy blue ST-62s? I can’t see the color option in any of the catalogues, but I know someone with an H-serial number.

We love Mike and Mike's! I wore my M&M's T-shirt to my gig last night here in Hawaii.

I lucked out and was able to buy two TL52-120 Fender Telecast, one dated 1987 in natural and one 1988 in Butterscotch. What amazing guitars. They are pride and joy, as Stevie Ray Vaughn would say.

I have a 2013 big-tele62 (tl-62) it has a custom edition decal on the back of the headstock. There is a #7 in the neck pocket. Is there any significance to the 7? The body is alder, fretboard rosewood. Not sure what I have it’s so hard to dial it in sometimes

I recently purchased two MIJ's. Nothing custom shop, but I'm really enjoying my new to me ST-68TX and a ST-67STB. Originally I was looking at the American Vintage II Strat but was able to get both of these for about the same price of a new American AVII.

Suddenly Fender Japan guitars have been recognized and the prices are going up, glad I got mine years ago when they where half the price of the MIM examples

Is the ice blue metallic available for sale? I'm very interested.

Hi Ricky, I actually have one of those, looking exactly the same (1987), if you are interested? Located in Sweden though.

Hey, I’ve got a T-serial that just has ST-62 in the neck pocket. How can I tell which tier it is? I watched your tiers video already, but I don’t have a stamp.

T-prefix serial numbers exist across the three main eras of Fender Japan production (prior to the current JD-prefix serials). This includes early Made in Japan, Crafted in Japan, and the return to Made in Japan nomenclature circa 2009. Your best bet it to narrow down the era of production, and correlate the features of your Strat with what was available in catalogs of that era. brochures.yokochou.com/ is a great place to do further research!

Tone wood don't actually mater in electric guitars. But preferable wood grain and color exist
