  • Today at Badgerworks we build a small dry stone wall using granite chips and glue for a diorama we've been working on.

    Very good idea, not only for using legos but overall clever way of creating stone walls for doramas

    When I lived in Yorkshire, I watched some blokes repairing some dry stone walling. Great skill used, and tremendously satisfying to watch. I don't know why, but it was. All I can say, is if you ever get a chance to see dry stone walls being built or repaired, do it - it's ancient skills still being used. I gave the blokes some money for a beer before I cycled off - I reckoned they'd earned it.

      There's a lot more to it than people might think - selecting and orienting that stones correctly so they fit together without collapsing.
      If you ever get the chance, coppicing and hedge laying provide a similar unexplainable satisfaction.

      I've been privileged to have worked alongside a dry stone waller on Dartmoor. I had built a wall in my garden and my neighbour put me in touch with a friend of his who was that waller. I learnt so much to the extent that I have used that skill here in France.........

    Nice technique - the final result looks really good. Great idea to use Lego so you can dismantle the mould when removing it too.

    Awesome technique! I have some diorama ideas that incorporate dry stonewalls and I'll certainly be using your method! Thank you

    A free source of sheet styrene. Gift cards are sheet styrene, about
    55mm by 86mm. The pictures and printing are a film that is bonded to
    the styrene and can easily be scraped or sanded off. Ask your relatives
    and friends who receive gift cards to save them for you instead of
    throwing them away when they use the contents up. Or if you are going
    out for fast food, buy a gift card first then use it to pay for your
    food.

    Great suggestion of using Legos for molds. The walls turned out quite nicely. - Jeff

      Lego is great for making mould boxes because it's reusable and you can make whatever shape you need to suit the object you're moulding.

    Glue 2 or 3 coffee stirrers together & cut them so they are a bit shorter than the length of the wall. Half fill your mold then lay the coffee stirrers in. Then fill up the rest of the mold. Should take some weight out of it and act as a stiffener. Love your quirky ideas. It's great when someone doesn't let themselves be a slave to convention. Next challenge for you....paint something in what you think a Reggae camouflage scheme would look like 😂👍

      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety +1

      Not a bad idea, but the pieces are surprisingly sturdy. I like the Reggae camo idea :-)

    Used the same technique to build a Germ.88 gun emplacement worked a treat and the block joins looked authentic, well done on the stones I have try that one!

    Lego moulds... inspired! Looks pretty realistic to me. Has a natural wet-look which might need matt coating maybe? Although if it's an English diorama, perfect. If you want a sandstone version, try Rice Crispies!

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety

      It'll get a matt coat as part of the diorama. As for the Rice Crispies, I might try that now, just for the hell of it :-)

    A much easier method is to use a muesli bar on its side ... Taking a bite out of one end giving that aged crumbly look.

    Hi there Geezer, been a while since we had one of your stunning videos to gawp at, and was wondering when the furnace at Badgerworks will be fired up again? I know work takes precedent but we miss you!!!

      Patience is a virtue, not just a card game :-)
      Seriously though, I'm pretty much working seven days a week at the moment and will be up until Christmas. I've also been having some computer problems that have prevented me editing any videos that I've had no time to fix, but rest assured normal service will be resumed soon.
      I appreciate your patience :-)

    this video brought to you by Vaseline - other lubricants are available.
    nice work - are you going to paint them, or leave them as is? From the vid and pics at the end, I think it would look good either way.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety

      They'll get a clear coat as part of the diorama, but other than that they'll stay as they are.

    Damn, wish I'd thought of using a mould. I spend a few days building my wall up layer by layer then filling all the gaps with putty, utter pain in the ass it's been.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety

      Don't beat yourself up over it. I do a lot of casting and mould making, so it was only natural I would use the same techniques here :-)
