What a gorgeous car, crisp body lines, sharply formed fender lines from quality stamping, crazy torque from those 425 ci engines.. My grandmother loved Oldsmobiles. I recall her '66 Delta 88, light blue metallic, with a 425.
Hi TheFRiNgEguitars, Make sure you stop by your Grandmothers house and show her this video. I'd like to read her comment. Thank you for viewing and adding to the story, Lou
Hey Lou, grandmother is no longer amongst us in this world, certainly would comment. She owned several Olds models from the 50's through 1970, my most memorable the '66 Delta 88 and '69 Cutlass. The 425 was the 2BBL version probably in the 300 hp range, but so much torque off the line...smooth and quiet, my grandmother loved this one most of all.
Sorry to read about her passing. From your comment and details of her love for cars, I'm sure she'd like this video :-)
Not many cars look good in gold paint, but man. What a great looking Oldsmobile.
Hi William Scott, I think the color makes this one look classy. Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Lou
Both the Toronado and the Riviera from this era were probably some GMs most elegant designs of the 60s.
Hi Kevin MacNutt, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
Check out the 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. It was absolutely stunning.
The Tornado, Rivera and Eldorado are just iconic. Love these videos. Thanks Lou!
@@JeffKing310 they were all built on the same platform.
Dan Gates Riveria was on Electra RWD. Eldo and Toro on FWD.
They didn’t share platform until 1979.
This was a rare car even when new, at least where I lived in northern Wisconsin. Even with all that weight over the front wheels, this car could smoke the tires.I saw it done once. This car had enough power to keep up with most muscle cars back then! Thanks for the memories Lou.
Thank you for viewing and sharing your experience with this car :-) You're welcome.
I HAD TO WATCH THIS AGAIN, WHAT A TIMELESS DESIGN!!!!!!! BLESS PEOPLE LIKE HIM TO KEEP THEM ALIVE!! Makes me feel 14 again sitting in our back seat, ours was a base without AC, bench seat, no PW, seats not even an FM radio
Hi Jim, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
There was a time when gm had a styling department. Thanks Lou
Thanks for viewing and sharing your thoughts on this car. You're welcome.
Gorgeous Toronado. Timeless styling that looks good this so many decades earlier. I am envious.

My dad bought a new 66 Toronado when I was 16 years old. He made the mistake of turning me loose with it every once in awhile. That 385 hp. 425 would haul ASS. I got it up to 130 mph on the flats one day. It was just one hell of a car. Even though I'm 68 years old now I'd love to have one again.
Hi Michael Ryan, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dad's car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this CZcams Channel, Lou
Oldsmobile made a big splash with this car in 1966. Americans hadn't seen a front-wheel drive car since the 1936/7 Cord. The styling is a free interpretation of a rocket fuselage. The long hood, short bobtailed fastback silhouette was also pretty radical for 1966. They never were able to beat the styling of this car in later years. Somehow none of the other attempts ever achieved quite the grace and subtlety of this one.
And that Trumpet Gold color was featured in their brochures. It really set off the car to perfection. No wonder it was so popular.
Hi dlwatib, Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts. Hope you see many more cars on this CZcams Channel you enjoy. Lou
I first drove a Toronado after installing a set of tires on it. (they ate up a set of bias-plies in under 10 K) the way it rode and handled was truly amazing for a car of its size.
HI Bruce Carney, Thank you for viewing and sharing your first hand knowledge with this car :-) Lou
I'm curious. Did you install radials? Did you notice any difference in handling?
I remember when radials first hit the market. They looked under inflated because of the bulge. People didn't like them but they eventually became the norm. Not even sure you can buy bias ply tires anymore
@@dougn2350 thanks, yes I put four newRadials on my 1961 Ford Conveetible (big, heavy) in (1965?), and it was quite a noticeable increase in gas mileage and “ speedy response: though I remember some squishy Steering...... ps, my 61 was Junky, had to replace quick with 66 GALAXIE xl/4 speed(352 4 BBL ALSO) .... Anyways, thank goodness for real radials,,...etc,
A really beautiful car! Arnold was lucky to find it with 40,000 original miles. Thanks, Lou!
Hi Brian Chappie, Glad you like this one and find it beautiful :-) Agreed, that's amazing to have so low miles. You're welcome, Lou
Olds at the top of their game for sure! One of my more wealthy friends had a 69 toronado, I remember marveling at that rolling speedometer. I wish I had the chance to drive it, this car will always look great.
Hi Kramden, "marveling at that rolling speedometer" I like that :-) Thank you for sharing and adding to the story, Lou
He has a goldmine in paint and car with this one. Oldsmobile is gone now, and this is the first year of one of the most innovative automobiles in automotive history. The practically new shape this car is in too. Its a museum piece. Great, great car find.
Hi Tommy, Happy to read you appreciate this "museum piece" :-) Lou
this is a car that has not aged what was polarising in 66 is contemporary in 2018 it is truly my favorite car of all time. that style of front seats was very popular in Australian cars through the sixties and seventies thankyou Lou for this
We have a Winner for you :-) You're welcome mad dog morgan, Lou
What an amazing car, and that subtle rumble from the pipes?! Cheers Lou
Glad you enjoy the sound of this one :-) Cheers
Bill Mitchell sure knew how to pen a design. Thanks for bringing this to us, Lou. This was one of my favorite cars of that era. I'd love to see its brother, the 1967 Eldorado.
Hi jnucci1, "one of my favorite cars from the era" We have a Winner! :-) If I see a good example of "it's Brother" and can track down it's Care Taker, you will too, Lou
Regarding, "Thanks for bringing this to us, Lou" You're welcome.
Mitchell was a director , Chuck Jordan drew it .
My friend had the twin to this one back in 1975. Awesome experimental car by Old's. Chain driven front wheel drive!
Hi carsbyjeff, Fun to see a car you have memories from :-) Thank you for commenting and adding to the story, Lou
Dad ordered his ‘66 Toronado and took delivery of one of the first 500 built. This was the first car I drove, and much like dad’s 1961 Triumph TR3, cleaning the drain tubes in the rear vent was my job. Dad’s Toronado was Trumpet Gold with very functional cornering lights. He kept his ‘66 until 1972, when he bought another new Toronado.

I can still remember the sound of vacuum when you pulled the headlight switch. I remember the original H 78 15 Oldsmobile tires with the single narrow outside tread. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous car,!
Yes sir, Lou, this car still makes me smile, and wish that I had one just like this. This color was perfect for the car, and happens to be the color of the car that Motor Trend used in its COTY Award issue, which I still have! Unfortunately, it was well-read (by me) and is missing the cover plus a few pages. Back then there were a few color photos, but a lot of black & white ones. I don't know if it is silly to say, but I will always have a 'crush' on the 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado ♥ Thanks Lou!
Happy to read "this car still makes me smile" :-) You're welcome Mike!
The style was so ahead of its time because it have such an seventies appeal
Hi Peter Alexander, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
That roofline has an incredible flow, really sets off the design stylistically.
What a sweetheart! Thank you for sharing the story of this beautiful '66 Toronado !

As a toronado owner/fan i was hoping someday you would do a toro again , amazing car and amazing video Lou , thanks! , really enjoyed.

Hi David Thourogood, I find it fun when I see one I'm familiar with. Appreciate the kind words on the video, and you're welcome, Lou
Seems everyone here has a Toronado story, so here's mine. Back in the fall of '65, a girl I knew who was 2 years older and was in high school(I just turned 67 last month) in Dequincy, LA dad had just bought a new one. Her dad had a saw mill near the edge of town and the family's name was Emmick. Her name was Kathleen. She or one of her sisters may be reading this! I was around 14 and she had just gotten her driver's license since she was 16 and could drive here in LA. That's the background. Now on to the car.
The color was a stunning deep purple(I think GM - or at least Chevy - called it "Royal Plum") with a black interior. I remember the car well since it made such talk in that small town(pop. around 6,000). I was and always will be a "car guy" and hung around guys that were as well. Her dad had a very successful sawmill at the edge of town and the family was, let's say, not hurting for $$$. Just after they got the car, she must have gotten permission to drive it on what must have been a Saturday, since we were out of school and watching her at a stoplight driving the curious new "Tornado"(it was so new to us we didn't pronounce it right and the name Tornado seemed to fit). As she pulled up to a stop light we were all gawking at her and the CAR. After the light turned green she must have given it too much gas and it broke traction("peeled out"). How delighted and somewhat awestruck we were when, to our amazement, we witnessed tire smoke coming from the front wheel wells!! There we were on our bikes with high handlebars and banana seats witnessing this event. That's a story I always love to tell.
Best regards from Lake Charles, LA. I love your channel and always look forward to another one of your videos. Keep up the great work. I know I'm speaking for a rather large fan base of like minded viewers.
Dale Andrews
Hi Dale Andrews, Thank you for viewing and sharing your Toronado story :-) Appreciate the kind words on this Channel, Lou
My husband and I had a car like that. We didn't know that the car was prone to have engine fires.....we found out the hard way. We lived out in the country and one day my husband got in it to go in town...the engine blew up! It was 15 or 20 minutes before the volunteer fire department arrived and by then it was too late. I loved that car!

My father bought a 1966 deluxe Toronado new. The color was Dubonnet (like burgundy wine). A few months later, that was the car I used to take my driver's test, as a teenager. Don't do the math. Oh, I passed.

Hi Gene978, We have a Winner! Thank you for the wonderful comment. I appreciate that, Lou
I had one exactly like that I bought new in April 1966 for $5,795.00 plus tax & license. Financing through GMAC. Mine had black interior with bucket seats and center armrest, with cornering lights. I loved it!
Hi Dejael, Happy to read this one brings back memories of your car :-) Lou
One of the few domestic vehicles produced back then where form and function complemented each other.
Hi MrGeeMan1980, Well said, Lou
These Tornados were never given the credit they deserve . Awesome cars with ground breaking tech and looks . Thank you for posting this !
Hi Jim kirk, "Awesome cars" high praise. Thank you for viewing and sharing. You're welcome, Lou
Thanks for sharing this video, it brings back good memories. My next-door neighbor had purchased one new in `66....he also owned more business suits than anyone I ever met, he always looked good driving that big Olds....
Hi Black Waterdogs, Glad this one brings back good memories. Thank you for sharing details on your neighbors 66 and adding to the story, Lou
This is a very rare 1966 OLDS . Never seen it before even during the period of my education in the States. IT'S AMAZING OLDS. I like very much .The owner really taking good care of his car. Please say hello to him. Thanks LOU for sharing this rare 66 OLDS. I like the video. It's great . Appreciate your efforts showing all great cars especially this OLDS. Please have a great day.
Hi Hisham Elfiki, Glad to share one you've never seen before :-) Hope you have a great day too. Thank you for your many kind words, it's appreciated, Lou
A dad of a friend of mine in my hometown of Buckhannon WV bought a brand new car identical to this Toronado. Randy Beckner's dad was transferred to a better executive position somewhere. This could be the car of the original owner I vaguely knew. Anyway, I've got a car from the '60s and one from the '70s and a couple modern ones; more than to keep me busy.
Stunningly beautiful styling. My grandparents almost special ordered one of these when they were new. My grandfather wanted either this gold or the plum color. My grandmother vetoed the purchase because the trunk was not large enough for their planned trip from California to Wisconsin. They ended up ordering an Olds 98, which was a very nice car, but I was disappointed. I still feel that this is one of the most beautiful cars to ever come out of Detroit.

Hey! you don't see one of these Oldsmobile all the time!
Great video Lou, thumbs up :-)
Hi Heinz, You're right, you do not see them. Regarding "great video Lou, thumbs up :-)" I appreciate that, Lou
Another Bill Mitchell work of art. And this is xlnt in presentation. The Toronado was from an era when GM allowed competition from its 4 primary divisions. Toronados more than the El Dorado & Riviera had more than their share of idiosyncrasies. A friend had a '68 with a funny dashboard. The tumbler speedometer would bounce from zero to 70 mph and the odometer rolled backward, so the farther you drove the fewer the miles it would show
Hi Steven, Happy to read you enjoy this "work of art" :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I seem to recall Ak Miller tearing up Pikes Peak (and the competition) in one purpose built car.

Toronado's flarin' her fenders long before the Hellcat widebody!
meanwhile WHO THUMBS DOWN THIS!?! bring them to me! the cars' lovely
Happy to read you think this car is "lovely" :-)
Incredible "fade" on the curves with that gold paint job ! Wow !
Hi Brian, Happy to read what you notice, Lou
The 1967 Eldorado & 1966 Toronado FWD program was developed in 1959 through a series of prototypes & heavy testing. GM had wanted Buick's Riviera to be FWD for 1966. But the brass at Buick was adamantly opposed to such for the fear it would hurt Riviera sales. So a FWD Riviera wouldn't be available until 1979
The Toronado & Eldorado were groundbreaking, state of the art & ahead of their time. Made at a time when GM meant " Mark Of Excellence "
David North penned the design for this car.

My father purchased a Toronado just like this one in late 1965 at Jim Graham Oldsmobile in Joliet, IL. It had its share of problems including an issue with the fuel tank. The service manager gave my dad a 442 convertible as a loaner when the Toro went in to have the tank repaired.

Hi Scott, High praise :-) Lou
Arnold has a bevy of beautiful big GM cars. That is his 427 Impala in the background. My college roommate's mom had one of these new when I was in 6th grade. It was gold like this. She drove it every day.
Ahhh good times, good times :-)
Lou, another super great AMERICAN car. My best friend's mom had a Trumpet Gold 66 new. I was 10 then. Thanks for the memories.

I recall when these came out. Front wheel drive was radical then. Only a few European cars were and this was the only fwd American car. Yes this heavy FWD was uniquely good in snow, literally tunneling through high snow drifts,
Hi Oilsmoke Jones, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge on this one, Lou
LOU, you and your friend commented on front disc brakes for the '67 Toro. The '66s, like this one, offered only drums. These cars with their weight distributed 55/45 were quite agile, and allowed them a top speed of 134 mph. But bringing a heavy Toro to a stop from high speed guaranteed a wet seat. Disc brakes are on all modern vehicles except 3/4. & 1ton trucks. Ford came out with optional front discs for their premium cars like the Country Squire in 1965. Frontdisc brakes were standard equipment on the 1950 Chrysler Imperial stretch limousine. But do you know what was the first car that had disc brakes ? The 1939 Buick "Y Job" one off custom roadster that GM gifted to the legendary car designer Harley Earl, who created the car from the first drawing to it's final assembly. The Y Job is known for such innovations power windows, radio antenna and vacuum operated disc brakes. Mr. Earl knew the advantages of this design, and yet it would be a quarter century before this superior safety design was offered to the public. That's messed up
Hi Steven, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Designed by David North, inspired by Gordon Beuhrig's 1936 Cord. It is a huge full size sports luxury car. Mine also had factory air, factory dual sport mirrors, factory AM-FM Stereo Radio with Vibrasonic (electronic echo chamber sound), Autronic eye, speed alarm, and 12-month factory warranty. I purchased it from Dick Browning Oldsmobile on Long Beach Blvd. in Long Beach, California.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

A really beautiful Toronado. With the engine over the front driven axle giving good traction. In contrast with the innovative front end, the rear is conventional. The flat floor giving plenty of room for the occupants.

It is interesting to see the styling cues which transferred into the 67 model years of Delta and Delmont 88s. In fact, one of the sales promotions in 67 was always "Toronado inspired styling." I own a 67 Delta 88, Delmont 88 and a 68 Delmont 88. You rarely see any of these 88 series models anywhere. Thanks for sharing, Lou. -Nick.
Hi Nick, Sounds like you have some nice cars too! You're right, you don't see them, so when I did I was really happy the Owner was willing to share with me, and you. You're welcome, Lou

At 1:37 I noticed the old Florida vehicle inspection decal from 1982 in the windshield. Vehicle inspections became a thing of the past not long after that. That said, I was just watching (more like RE-watching) *DRAGNET* episodes and this car was featured in one episode and I think it was the same 'Trumpet Gold' color shown here. The Toronado in the show had a police radio and even a post-mounted spotlight if you can imagine that! Those were the days . . .

I remember a story about a big wreck involving a 75 Toronado. Police came up on the scene and immediately thought fatalities. But both driver and passenger survived because of the airbags.
Olds was way ahead of its time.
Olds was the innovator for GM.
My brother had one years ago. It was great in the snow. It was a gas guzzler.
Hi mike u, Glad to read this car / video brings back memories of your Brothers car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Marvelous to see this well preserved example. My grandfather's was in some kind of green colour. This looks like Jay Leno's Bentley GT beater! It uses a little less fuel than Jay's.. The first crude oil embargo of 1972 hadn't occurred yet. It wasn't efficient enough for my grand dad. Cars needed to get more than ten miles per gallon that these beautiful automobiles provided to stay in the driveway.
Hi Scott Brady, Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story with details on your Grandfathers car :-) Lou

These cars had a special low rumble from the huge V8s that made them very easy to identify by the exhaust note.

1:36 - those are the air intake vents for the air flow through ventilation. The air exits out thru the vents above the trunk. These a vintage Toronado commercial here on CZcams that mentions it.

G.M.,s car of the future not because of front wheel drive but in styling.
Thanks for viewing & sharing.
There was a burgundy Toro at McCormick's in Palm Springs a couple years ago... it's was as spectacular as this one. I wanted it bad ! unfortunately, I didn't have enough juice. It sold for less than I would have expected.
Hi Jay Wilder, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hopefully you'll purchase yours soon, Lou
The toronado was GM,s car of the future . It set a styling trend.
Hi Peter Hogan, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge to add to the story, Lou
I wanna be Lou's cameraman. Hire me Lou!!.
HI Steve Osgood, Many times it's my 12 year old son, so currently the position is filled. However maybe the Channel will grow to get to "Jay Leno's Garage" size and I'll need a Team of people. Let's hope :-) Lou

Gorgeous car from any angle, could be hard on tires because of front wheel drive. But for the fortunate person to own such a beauty, it was worth it!

As with every first-year design, I'm sure it had its share of bugs in it, but they would make improvements in subsequent years.
Hi David, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
Thanks a lot
You're welcome
The engine has a traditional front to rear layout, yet front wheel drive. I'm a little hazy but I think the tranny sits next to the engine with a chain drive.
Hi srecrcr, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

11094DEREK "FWD muscle!" I like that :-) Thank you for viewing and commenting, Lou
Another fine video Lou. Love this Toronado.
The 1966 is my favorite model.
I have a Dinky die cast minature model of the 66 Toronado with pop up headlights.
Its the closest i can get to owning the full size model given the Toronado is rare in Australia.
Cheers. 😊
A toy is a toy, this one's just a bit bigger, and yet, they are both fun. Glad you are able to see one of your favorite models Professor Pat Pending, Lou
Lou Costabile. definitely love to play with the bigger toy. cheers.
