    I cry every time I hear this song. It was a favourite of my very much loved complex son. He was very intelligent but found it very hard to fit in . He took his own live at the age of 35 in 2019 . 2 weeks before Christmas. I miss him every day

    Brassic got me here. Perfect song for the show. This song, along with the video, shows 'reality'...just like Brassic does. Although it's a comedy with supposed exaggerated characters, they're so real to me, as I know them all, or have done. It's about the choice's some of us make regarding how to live our lives, and how to make money. It's all there...pain, love, jealousy, madness and proper belly laughs....and this song encapsulates all that, along with the heart-breaking awkwardness that sometimes goes along with being different.

    I think this is the ultimate ‘loner’ song, about people who prefer to be alone but also crave company and love. They struggle with intimate relationships but seem very sociable when you meet them. This makes them hard work in relationships and very introverted people but ultimately, if you put the work in, very rewarding and loyal.
    The percentage is saying what you’d get out of the relationship if you did stick it out, but it goes down as you have missed your chance through the song and the singer has gained enough confidence to be alone again.

    • @GreyCatDot
      @GreyCatDot Před 2 lety +2

      I’m the extrovert drawn to them, doing all the work, and feeling unwanted. Still drawn to them. Most of my friends and partners are like that.

      I would've agreed with this as a teenager. Nowadays I think it's important just to be hopelessly positive in the face of a world that probably isn't our (or anyone's) friend. Not disagreeing with the meaning you've found though. Just explaining how my own mind has changed over the years since this was released. Good luck on your travels my friend

    • @matttaylor7080
      @matttaylor7080 Před 2 lety +6

      @@brynjones3530 Interesting since writing this i have had some counciling and found out that although loved as a chid I had a lack of emotional intimacy with my parents so had a lack of experience in dealing with it. Meaning I was openly sociable but struggle with intimate emotions and therefore relationships. Think looking at John Grant lyrics he has had similar issues, although maybe more through his sexuality when young.

    just re-watched this video yesterday and it really struck me the sadness and loneliness it depicts....trying to be social, but not quite fitting in......putting yourself out there and still alone no matter what. It's a huge demonstration of a solitary and sad life, carrying on in necessity - sometimes happy enough, sometimes very alone. It was the saddest saddest thing to watch when I really did.

    • @DaFreezeey
      @DaFreezeey Před 7 lety +19

      You are kind of close. It's more about self loathing. He doesn't love himself at all and talks about how he is aware of it by the things he "feels" that may not be the "social" norm. There for he doesn't know how to love anyone else because he can't love himself first. But the chorus is the contrast in him trying to find the positive of his situation by saying we all should be laughing more no matter what shit we go through.

    The basketball represents his shine, in the spiritual sense his inner light and love if you will. Throughout the video he is being himself, enjoying himself, and speaking to people as his true self. He's treating people as equals, as human beings, he's not looking at them in comparison to himself competitively or comparatively. The things he does alone in the video Is the truest expression of self love. It's not loneliness. Notice he loses his basketball before the bar scene, (his shine). Waits for a date that doesn't show. Becomes self conscious in a bar filled with trendy bar stars where he doesn't feel like he fits in, he's too much in his own head instead of living through his heart. Until he closes his eyes, remembers his shine and comes back to himself. It's Self love. A great teacher of mine recommended this video to me and said "Im not going to lose my basketball for someone." Don't ever lose yourself for someone else. Love you all.

    A colossus of a song. Achingly beautiful. Belongs In the pantheon of great songs. Cohen, Simon and Dylan. Let’s ask them. “I should have practiced my scales!!!”

    Is this funny? Or is it sad? I can't decide - which may be why it is so brilliant. I was down the front at Field Day on Sunday listening to him sing this. Flipping great.

    I have always played this song for people and told them it was written about me. I still believe he wrote it about someone just like me but until I read the comments I didn’t see the truest saddest part about it, and while it smarts I am so grateful I read the comments and for the people that made me see it.
    My people, apparently. Thank you all. ❤

    People can be prone to exaggeration in CZcams comments and I dare say I'm as guilty of it as anyone, but I genuinely believe that in the lyrics and production this is one of the truly great songs of our age.

    This has grown to become one of my favourite songs ever. If you like this, you should also check out some of Grant's work with his former band, The Czars. You could do worse than starting out with "Paint the Moon" (which I've heard him play at his own concerts) and "Roger's Song", which is absolutely beautiful.
