No, the way I see it, Travis Bickle was no longer disturbed because he was dead. He did not survive the shootout.
This whole ending sequence is very fantasy-like representing a kind of purgatory fulfilling Travis Bickle's earlier curse on Betsy, "You'll die in hell like the rest of 'em"

@@veysel3134 Yes, I've read that Martin Scorsese considered the ending sequence to be real. I thought the sequence was supposed to be real when I very first saw the film back in the '70s (I was a dumb teen). I interpreted it as the irony of how the press crowned Travis Bickle a hero after his bloodbath, but in reality he remained a cold blooded killer who would most likely do it again.
But then when I read of the idea that he actually died at the end, I felt like I had been fooled. I watched it again, and now I can't see the outcome of the climactic gunfight as anything but Travis Bickle's death. Whether or not they intended to portray it, they did portray it.

The only difference is the way she makes you feel. She may be unattractive but if she makes you feel like anythings possible, like a king..then thats all that counts. Theory 1-Travis did survive the shoot out, if you pay attention he was not exactly shot in the neck, the bullet grazed his neck tearing the skin, he was then shot in the right shoulder hence the reason why he said he still felt stiff after the shoot out, he passed out due to blood loss and recovered in the hospital, several months go by, his wounds fully heals, his hair fully grown back and hes back to driving the cab, he runs into Betsy and picks her up and they reunite and have a small talk, Betsy is happy to see him and that he is well, though she is not sure how to express her feelings to Travis, when after he drops her off, she hesitates asking him if he is interested in coming in her home for a coffee, but instead asks the cab fee, Travis smiles and kindly rejects her and drives off, finally letting go his love for her, he gets startled by his own eyes reflecting in the mirror due to his PTSD, but is relieved that it was only himself.

Betsy rejected Travis and that can lead down to a road of depression and rage. Travis had little experience with women but his heart was in the right place giving her the record. And being cold and giving it back to Travis. Betsy her character is confusing she doesn’t know what she wants. Travis when he said so long and the rear view mirror is empty. Travis finally erased Betsy and took his own path in dealing with himself as his character.

This scene clearly makes us see that Travis is extraordinary and kind person. Even though Betsy rejected him multiple times he still respects her and is happy by seeing her in the taxi. But at the same time he has already forgiven her and doesn’t have any feelings for her anymore, but he doesn’t treats her like ordinary costumer, he pays for her ride and goes on his way. Travis has always been kind and sweet person, but seeing all these dirty behaviors day and night has brought him inner chaos. He wanted to find peace with justice and he did exactly that. Lucky for him he was recognized as hero. World gave him second chance because he was a good man. He may still become troubled but at that scene he is clearly found his inner peace.

I think this still might be the interpretation of the movie to some degree but at the end I assumed this scene was some mad fever dream of a dying travis, still seeing himself as the righteous hero. Schrader said, “The epilogue is not a dream sequence, it’s just the restarting of the movie. I’ve always felt that the last frame could be spliced to the first frame and the movie started all over again.”
In other words, Bickle isn’t cured, he’s a sociopath waiting for another opportunity to explode.
Meanwhile, De Niro told The Guardian when asked about the theory, “I know that was not the intention, but it’s as valid as anything.”
In other words, it’s not what the filmmakers intended, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. As Schrader himself added, “Good movies leave themselves open for interpretation.”
