That's a museum piece! I'm consistently amazed at Norm's ability to find these treasures. Thank you Mark for featuring this bass so soon after the one from a week ago. A definite treat for us bass players out here in the world. Big fan of "Guitar of the Day". Great job!

Hey anyone whining about playing bass w a pick should read up on Carol Kaye - prob the most recorded bassist of the early pop era - played with guess what....

Joe Osborn was the main bassist in The Wrecking Crew and he had more number one hits than any bassist on the entire planet in the history of the world and he used a pic and guess what...every one of those hits was played on a 1960 Fender Jazz Bass with flat-wound strings. If you want to know what he sounded like in the studio listen to "windy" by the Association or a little bit later Superstar by The Carpenters that is the same bass just recorded a little differently. You can do anything with that bad boy that is the Holy Grail and like somebody pointed out below that is like to a guitarist a 1959 Les Paul. I am very fortunate to have a 61 and have had it for many many years it's beat to hell but the neck is straight and the pickups are fine so that's all I care about and it sounds just like this maybe a little better to my ears but he should have taken those pickup covers off and the bridge cover as well they are such a hindrance but yeah that's the Holy Grail I can't imagine what the price tag is on that one it's in much better condition than mine but like I said you don't buy a 1960 jazz bass for the condition you buy it for the tone and the soul and the Mojo and you just play it until you no longer can play an instrument and die. If you are a serious bassist you buy one of these and drive a shitbox car for about 5 years and then you can afford it and guess what... All your buddies who bought a brand new car instead of a 1960 jazz bass well their cars are now almost worthless but that jazz bass only went up in value interesting perspective eh? Yeah you can tell I really am a real musician LOL my wife always asked me why I always drove a beater car and never buy new clothes... I pointed at my pile of musical gear and she said... Oh I see... then she said to me, whatever makes you happy babe... At that moment I knew I would marry her and I wish every musician the same blessing.

Actually the funny thing about the Jazz bass is that the very first prototype, made before standard production in 1959, actually was a three knob setup. It also had single coil pickups in a larger humbucker sized cover. It was originally designed to be the bass version of the jazz master, and originally called the "Deluxe" model. That prototype was on reverb a year or two ago and sold for like 40+K I believe.

Gary Ferraro If you’ve truly played bass for over fifty years (which I’m not buying), then it’s sad that someone as advanced in age as yourself still acts like a child. Also, there’s no way for you to prove that you’ve done all the things that you’ve claimed, so I’m gonna call BS. You’re likely a teenager or young adult (judging by your childish behavior) and I sincerely doubt that you’d have so much work in the industry with your disgusting attitude. He didn’t directly say your opinion didn’t matter but implied it? You’re quite sensitive. I suppose everyone has to validate your opinion or else your insecurities will start to show. If you have to resort to using insults, then your argument isn’t very strong and you’ve already lost. Thanks for making an ass out of yourself and giving us all a great laugh.
