that's the 59 les paul to a Bass Player
That's a museum piece! I'm consistently amazed at Norm's ability to find these treasures. Thank you Mark for featuring this bass so soon after the one from a week ago. A definite treat for us bass players out here in the world. Big fan of "Guitar of the Day". Great job!
Hey anyone whining about playing bass w a pick should read up on Carol Kaye - prob the most recorded bassist of the early pop era - played with guess what....
LOL The "fingers police".
Also Bobby Vega
Pretty sure the Beatles also used a pick for bass.
Also Jason Newsted and Dave Ellefson killed songs with picks
Joe Osborn was the main bassist in The Wrecking Crew and he had more number one hits than any bassist on the entire planet in the history of the world and he used a pic and guess what...every one of those hits was played on a 1960 Fender Jazz Bass with flat-wound strings. If you want to know what he sounded like in the studio listen to "windy" by the Association or a little bit later Superstar by The Carpenters that is the same bass just recorded a little differently. You can do anything with that bad boy that is the Holy Grail and like somebody pointed out below that is like to a guitarist a 1959 Les Paul. I am very fortunate to have a 61 and have had it for many many years it's beat to hell but the neck is straight and the pickups are fine so that's all I care about and it sounds just like this maybe a little better to my ears but he should have taken those pickup covers off and the bridge cover as well they are such a hindrance but yeah that's the Holy Grail I can't imagine what the price tag is on that one it's in much better condition than mine but like I said you don't buy a 1960 jazz bass for the condition you buy it for the tone and the soul and the Mojo and you just play it until you no longer can play an instrument and die. If you are a serious bassist you buy one of these and drive a shitbox car for about 5 years and then you can afford it and guess what... All your buddies who bought a brand new car instead of a 1960 jazz bass well their cars are now almost worthless but that jazz bass only went up in value interesting perspective eh? Yeah you can tell I really am a real musician LOL my wife always asked me why I always drove a beater car and never buy new clothes... I pointed at my pile of musical gear and she said... Oh I see... then she said to me, whatever makes you happy babe... At that moment I knew I would marry her and I wish every musician the same blessing.
Keep the Rush comming Mark. I love it ✌😎
Actually the funny thing about the Jazz bass is that the very first prototype, made before standard production in 1959, actually was a three knob setup. It also had single coil pickups in a larger humbucker sized cover. It was originally designed to be the bass version of the jazz master, and originally called the "Deluxe" model. That prototype was on reverb a year or two ago and sold for like 40+K I believe.
Love it!! Got me a 2000 re-issue version.
I'm sure Geddy Lee has at least one of those in his collection. For someone who isn't a bass player you seem to kill it every time you demo one. Awesome videos...keep'em coming!
I use a SkinTone pick when I play bass. I just love them. They are perfect for a guitar player who occasionally plays bass.
I'm An EveryDay kind of guy.......Love the vids Mark..... You have a plethora of knowledge about Vintage Guitars and it always great to see and hear what you have to Show and play.
Cheers.
Omg I love 💕 the 1960 J bass !
Thanks for posting
Mark, you are the best thing about this channel!
Dream bass! Nice job @markagnesi.
It would be great if you put the specific link for the instrument
pick sounds F'n great!
THAT'S 2 RUSH SONGS IN 1 WEEK. ! love the vids man! keep up the great work
" Your damn right two rush song in one week "

Great vid my dream bass for sure. I like your attitude pick thumb fingers whatever I'm just groovin and playin. Also do a review of your leather jacket it's sweet
Not on the website, sold already ?? How much ?
what are the string on this bass? damn, it sounds as deep as a precision bass!
love the videos with Mark. I hope to visit and buy a Gibson from Norman's, if I survive my divorce. thanks for the day these videos.
Nobody Knows You will always have music. Don't forget that.
Nobody know, I'm really sorry to hear what you went through I hope you are doing better these days and finally got the Les Paul you were looking for and are in better spirits divorce is one of the worst things a human being can go through it's like having cancer in your soul but you can't just cut it out. I've tasted some of that so hope you are doing better now... Peace, Bob
That’s a beautiful bass.
Cool groovy fender jazz bass.
Best picks for bass Dunlop gator 2.0mm the grey one
Those ricks behind him tho😍
hot damn. Jazz Bass + SVT = instant amazing tone
Try a jazz bass through a 360. Your ears will melt.
Have you seen Bobby Vega's interview/performance video where he plays a number of Jazz basses (including a stack knob) through a 360? It sounds awesome!
Sam Prudden Yup! i watch that video often. great tones throughout that one as well. Vega is a beast
Rush... Beautiful try and beautiful bass
Sweet
more RUSH!!!!
What was the second rush song?
I'm playing my bass right now
Still no price shown on the video and a link to the page would be nice
Man those knobs are STACKED!

can you do an eb0 or eb3 next time?
Felt picks would also approximate the sound of fingers pretty closely, though slightly muted in tone
bcrich581 felt picks are an option, but in our opinion felt picks aren't a serious tool for serious tone. Our design allows players for the first time to wield the tone of leather (skin) like never before!
Jazz bass is the best bass
......absolutely..........gorgeous.......
Was that an original starcaster in the background? That's probably the rarest fender bass in existence.
I always wonder why fender left the dual knob jazz bass. just more options! seems very anti Leo
It is a great design and gives you the option of dialing in separate tone for either pickup. The possibilities are endless.
@@gutbucket260 No they're not, it was quite a useless thing actually, the variations weren't even noticeable.
Herbie Flowers still maintains that he bought his stacknob in 1959 in Mannys New York.
wish i could have gotten my hands on that bass a true 60 j bass was more than likely thru the hands of leo himself i do have an original 62 and there is nothing like it i have a crap load of fenders and the 60s basses are the best
If possible I'd like to see either a Fretless or 8 string bass.
Martialis Tiberius you're a fucking idiot
Lenny Kravitz I belong to you. That bass look good!
What in the world is that next to the tbird?
TheJackOfHeartsAndThe1939 a fender starcaster
Can you do a PJ bass sometime for Thumpin' Thursdays?
I find the best pic for bass is the gator grey pic with the kind of fuzzy natural idk what the natural is called but the pic is hard and thick
I always thought the finger/thumb rest was a weird pickup... I guess you learn new things everyday
Ahahahah same
'73 Rick 4001 bass next. Please.
Hey I asked nicely...
I belong to this bass
luuuuuuuuuussssssssh
Mmm deluxe mute carrying bag. Those are rare.
But honestly, how is that Pickgaurd not destroyed. Those things always seem cracked
HEY!
Do Gretch!
Look at Tina Weymouth the way she plays the bass guitar in Tom Tom club and Talking Heads
you're goddamn right two Rush songs in one week!
the sharp dressed man
Mr Big Stuff!
What's the 2nd one?
I belong to you, lenny kravitz
Thanks. it is such a familiar groove and the melody was in my head. I was thinking Beyoncé or Toni Braxton.
these basses were so much less harsh-sounding in the early years
Who do you think you are Mr. Big Stuff. You're never gonna get my love...
(?) the 2nd one is so familiar (?)
Beyoncé? Toni Braxton?
... Each another's audience
Outside the gilded cage...
I really miss Mark A.!
Oh yes, price?
For not being a bass player, it sounds pretty ok to me.
I'd love to hear this side-by-side with the Mexican-made Flea signature bass just to provide perspective. I'm not really sold with the sound of the signature bass, to be honest. I'd be really curious to hear how the two would sound in comparison to the other
PLEASE PLAY A RICKENBACKER
A FINE BASS FOR SURE - ISKINTONES IS NOT ON THE NET - ME A SLW NETTER - MORE INFO ON THE PICKS - CARLOS GUITARLOS

You could probably buy a small two bedroom house for the price of that bass .. if I had the money just to blow I would buy one though .. holy grail of basses...
You are like the Anthony Bourdain of guitars.
lets have a weird one next mark!
Same type of Jazz bass played by Joe Osborn.
It’s got TONE
The "tug bar" became the "thumb rest" in 1974.
anthony drake officially, anyway. Guys were moving them sooner than that.
anthony drake I have a '75 P-bass (not a Jazz) I bought brand new - the bar is below the G string - I left it and never use it.
There is always the oddball exception. Fender made the official switch in 74, but at every transition there were parts left over from earlier days.
RUSH!!!
Hey Mark, you should do an album with Andy at Reverb. I would totally by the album. I think a lot of people would.
We're all Canadian eh?
You sound better than many full time Bass players.
Nice video! You too young to like Rush. (You must have snuck into some of your daddy's old LPs. Yes?)
boboala1 How the hell can you be "too young to like rush"? explain that to me..
Very cool bass but the coolest are behind your right elbow…
“Who do you think you are, Mr big stuff”
wooooooo sexy bass 😀
I spy a Squier......
Why are the guitar demos from this channel so much better? Please get a decent bass player to do these videos
this mark seems to have a gib(s)on his shoulder
outch buttons and zippers ...
What do you mean, you're not a bass player. Sounds good to me dude.
Honestly I don't like the rests for your fingers, I always end up smacking my fingers against it
rush..with a pick...and on such a great bass..why man? lol
I don’t have $30,000 to spend on it!
Roundwounds on it - what a shame.
Gary Ferraro who the hell cares
Gary Ferraro Ew, you're one of those people huh? How about you understand that people play bass different ways and that there's no definitive way to play bass.
Gary Ferraro You just contradicted yourself, nice. You say that I'm saying you're opinion doesn't matter, but you just said that only your opinion matters. And I never said your opinion doesn't matter and I never said you should only play with a pick. I'm just saying that people play bass differently and that playing bass has no definite technique. And stop acting like some sort of bass god. P.S. You can reply to people by pressing the reply button, @-ing someone isn't here on CZcams anymore. :)
Gary Ferraro If you’ve truly played bass for over fifty years (which I’m not buying), then it’s sad that someone as advanced in age as yourself still acts like a child. Also, there’s no way for you to prove that you’ve done all the things that you’ve claimed, so I’m gonna call BS. You’re likely a teenager or young adult (judging by your childish behavior) and I sincerely doubt that you’d have so much work in the industry with your disgusting attitude. He didn’t directly say your opinion didn’t matter but implied it? You’re quite sensitive. I suppose everyone has to validate your opinion or else your insecurities will start to show. If you have to resort to using insults, then your argument isn’t very strong and you’ve already lost. Thanks for making an ass out of yourself and giving us all a great laugh.
Gary Ferraro if you had been doing sessions 50 years ago then you would well used to playing pick style,so I think you are full of shit too.
It only sounds cool when you sound like Bobby Vega lol
next time you do a bass do so slap bass
am i the only who thinks the metal guards over the pickups was just an awful look?
definitely just an opinion. Must have been a popular one though, because you don't see those chrome covers any more
I agree....We would take them off the day we bought the bass back in the day. :-)
DFM Bass - same, hate them on jazz bass, don’t mind them on precision bass but prefer without
They look horrible to me
They have them installed to show the bass is complete. More money can be made from a 1960 jazz bass with the original ash trays than without.
Jesus Chuwwrrr-ist, Mark! Stop slamming those case lids against the wood. I know it's bothering a lot of us viewers. Go a little slower. At least pretend that you care.
this is a really good and expensive bass guitar presentetd by a non bass player, playing a lick from lenny kravitz who also is a non bassplayer. if you are presenting a squier for kids and beginners ok. You need a good bassplayer to let the bass singing if you wanna get 8000 $ for this bass. why are you not presenting for victoria secret. Cause you can´t sell their products and thats the same with top bass guitars.
Agneesi is intelligent and can really play well, but oh so arrogant. Lemmo for life over here.
People moaning about picks/ fingers or flat wounds vs round wounds......for fuck sake....get a life...go out and a play a gig in front of real life, living breathing people! They won't give a shit.
RUSH WITH A PICK????? BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!
Could tell by just listening to him talk that he would be a shite musician. Strange....beautiful jazz bass all the same
