The ‘health at every size’ thing makes no sense, if being underweight is unhealthy then so is being extremely overweight. Also a lot of fat activists base their entire identity around being fat. Also, I'm an EMT, and while that definitely doesn't make me an expert, I know enough to know that being obese causes SO many complications. Not only is there diabetes, high blood pressure/high cholesterol (both of which can lead to stroke over time), there's also the simple logistical fact that a two-man team of first responders cannot move someone who is fucking 500 lbs. on their own without causing themselves harm. For example, where I work, if you are over a certain weight, we can't move you in a normal ambulance. Which means if you go into cardiac arrest, EMS/FD has to keep doing CPR until the bariatric truck gets there, which delays hospital care and makes it more likely that you won't survive.

      *crash dieting and caloric restriction doesn’t work. Nourishing your body well, does! As a former anorexic who became obese during recovery (ETA: and is now at a healthy weight), I have come to believe that body fat is the way an under-nourished and over-toxic body protects itself.
      Once you increase the nourishment (of thiamine especially-that is the most underrated essential vitamin we are all not getting enough of), and lower the toxicity (soluble fiber helps the body clear out fat soluble waste), then the obesity resolves itself without caloric restriction of any kind.
      Whole grains and legumes = sources of thiamine and fiber.
      Lean beef = source of iron and zinc and B12
      Nut and seeds = sources of B vitamins, minerals, and EFAs
      Sugar and flour = fast energy
      The obesity-causing foods are dairy (full of toxins including fat-soluble vitamins which increase mortality and lead to obesity), and excessive beta carotene and oxalate containing veggies and fruits (mangos, carrots, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, spinach are the worst).

      I also lost weight recently, and honestly that whole “doesn’t work” argument is what made me put off doing it/give up on previous attempts. They make it seem so complicated. I mean, there definitely are things you can do that make you lose weight more or less efficiently, but on a basic level it’s just calories in/calories out. Based on my experience it’s more important when you’re starting out to just pick something repeatable, worry about the fine tuning once you’ve found a basic plan to start from.

But i already have lost.. maybe 5 to 7 lbs( guessing). Im told i already look better. The bloating is almost gone and i just feel better. The food is amazing. I eat from veggie and fruit platters. Gods food. Its very tasty and filling. I even will allow myself a plate of spagetti about once a week. Ill even drink a couple of cans of soda a week. Much less then what i did. I drink water everyday now . My face seems to have a slight glow. Im healthier and happier. By feb 14 i hope to be down to 135 lbs. By Spring 128 lbs. I can do this .. I'm also generally of the mind "My body; my choice." I don't go around telling fat people to lose weight or what they should wear. But I draw the line when they jump to spreading misinformation about the health effects of severe obesity and poor diet or that their weight is anyone's responsibility except their own. Cherry-picking a handful of studies that say being fat is fine vs. the mountains of evidence otherwise is self-serving and insulting to the rest of us. And what REALLY gets me is that some take the "fatphobic" mentality so far it makes them shame other people for not adopting their outlook on health. Since the pandemic started, you've seen lots of people express frustration with being stuck at home and putting on weight. I've seen "advocates" state sincerely that such frustration is "fatphobic." So if not wanting to be fat is "fatphobic" and trying to lose weight is "fatphobic" (and also impossible as they believe), they've created this trap where the only acceptable thing for people to do if they become fat is stay that way. Actively dictating how OTHER people should feel and take care of their bodies, is not activism. It's tyranny.

    • @highfivedog
      @highfivedog Před 3 lety +5

      But the thing is, in our society some people think the worst thing that could happen to them is to gain weight. And the mindset comes from this hole planet being fatphobic and not even realizing it. No one is telling people to stay fat. They are just questioning the reasons people feel so bad about becoming fat and wanting to loose the weight. You can loose weight, if that is really what YOU want. But for example people have made the case for other beauty standarts like wearing makeup: If you like to wear makeup, thats great! If you dont, thats great too! But wanting to wear makeup or thinking that you cant go anywhere without it are two very different things. So the body positive movement is not mad at people to wanting to loose weight. They want to make it okay for people to gain weight and not hate themselves. Thats pretty much what this is about. Just being nice to your body. Fat people are bullied and shamed everywhere. Body positivity wants to make the world a safer place to all of us. And that if you gain weight its not the end of the world and you dont have to punish yourself. And if you still want to loose the weight for yourself, that is totally fine. You body your choice.

    • @highfivedog
      @highfivedog Před 3 lety +5

      I also want to add, that I myself tried to loose weight for probably 15 years and I was hating my body the hole time. Once I accepted my body as it is I started to enjoy working out and consuming foods that make my body feel good. And I eat everything! But in moderation. All foods are good foods. This acceptance made me feel good in my body (almost) everyday. My body is a still fat, but its such a good body. It takes me to places and holds my brain and my feelings and everything in between! I've also managed to loose weight and keep it of this way. Sure, before I've lost like 60 pounds by hating myself and dieting, but I could not keep the weight down that way. It always came back. With extra! My goal is to loose weight so I could do all the things I want, go hiking and stuff, but I dont think Im ugly being fat. Im pretty in this size and every size Im gonna be in the future. This took me about 15 to 20 years to realize. And it's all thanks to therapy AND body positivity.

I ballooned up to 280lbs so almost 100lbs more. I left them when I realized it was toxic and as of being with a new partner it's been extremely difficult for me to lose the weight. I'm 250lbs now and have IBS, I don't recommend being fat. It's not healthy.

    I am a 63 year old male who once weighed 480 lbs. I am 6 ft. tall and now weigh 300 lbs. I will most likely always be a "big" guy...but I get up at 2:30 am. to workout everyday before I go to work. I am very health conscious about life. I eat well, and after a very difficult ten yeas of loss in my life, I am slowly healing and becoming healthy in mind as well. At my top weight, I had a friend give me a CD about healthy eating. No judgment. A few days later I collapsed and almost died. My Dr. told me I had some choices to make. I had to choose to live. I made that choice. It is a journey. There is a big difference between shame and encouragement. I think we should not be judging or shaming. But never stop encouraging others to live healthy because we love them. Off topic....Arielle, you won my heart with the way you gave a quick kiss to the puppy. It was truly a tender moment that speaks of the kindness of your character and heart.

    As a personal trainer I've dealt with the obesity epidemic year round for 15 years. It saddens me when people choose to be unhealthy.
    But what does harm is all of this feminist propaganda over obesity. Implying that a woman's obesity is not her fault, that she should be rewarded for it, and that a guy who isn't sexually attracted is basically a racist. 👎
    At least obese men aren't entitled and deluded over it. If they choose to be fat, they know why it happened. They don't whine or make excuses on social media with "fat phobia", "diet culture" or "thin privilege". They didn't create an industry to promote or glorify obesity like plus size modeling. Most of all, they don't claim obesity is positive.
    In the end nobody is born obese and it's a result of your own choices. It's not a medical condition or a disease. If you choose to be obese that's fine. But stop trying to convince yourself that it's a natural healthy state of being or that you can't change. 💯

I laugh because it's factual. Let's not sugar coat truth. Being obese is a poor way to treat your body and I don't want to be like this forever. I can't understand anyone who would want that.

    So I'm all for health, right? Obesity is bad ofc and anyone being like yeah, stay unhealthy is super bad. But there is historically disproportionate abuse in health care targeting fat people. Some extreme sizes are def out of line for health but we have doctors who glorify recorded anorexic behavors because a fat woman was engaging in them...should we not be concerned? I say make women feel great in their bodies so that if they feel like changing their body up on their own terms, they don't have aggressive diet marketing making them feel like shit or making their genuine goals feel like nothing worth celebrating. And, if you personally aint into bigger people, just minding your own will do wonders. Some big people genuinely get death threats and I gotta wonder why people mind someone else's buisness so damn much that you wanna kill them. Just do you.

    So my Dad knew a doctor who was (and probably still is) researching the relation between gut biota (the bacteria in your stomach) and mental health, because there is a link between what we eat and how we feel mentally. That's not to say that in order to be mentally stable you need to only eat lean meat and vegetables. And there is definitely going to be pre-dispositions for some people, where a poor diet may trigger mental health problems. But I think a lot, if not most, people don't realise how intertwined our physical and mental health are. And I think loving your body should be trying to take care of both of those things as best as you can.

    Go to any part of the world that doesnt sell food containing excessive sugar and fat content and you'll find very less obese people there. Nobody becomes fat by eating too many apples. Just stop eating unhealthy. It's difficult and may seem unfair if you have low metabolism, but it's the same as smoking and drinking for short term pleasure and relief at the cost of long term health risk. If these people got fat by smoking, I'm sure they'd argue that smoking is completely natural and healthy.

  • @somethingbig3797
    @somethingbig3797 Před 2 lety +1

    Whenever a fat person tells you 'they've tried everything,' they haven't. They tried everything except what they should be doing. When I was 372 lbs I made the same excuses "I tried EVERYTHING!" When in reality, I tried every fad diet and never stuck to any of them... because they are diets and they are not sustainable.
    What made me lose 187 pounds was eating real food. No fast food, no processed food, no dairy, no simple carbs, just whole foods. Beans, eggs, chicken breast, all kinds of vegetables, fruits, sweet potatoes, wild rice... actual food in its original form (I did eat nuts as well, but really portioned those out because they are very calorie dense). Once I did that, the weight naturally came off and I felt so much better that I WANTED to exercise. I felt full instead of hungry all the time. I didn't even have to count calories because what I was eating was filling and not calorie dense. No alcohol, no juice, no sugary drinks/desserts only water.
    People haven't 'tried everything.' They try everything EXCEPT what they should have been doing all along, and that's change WHAT they eat, not necessarily how much they eat. People just don't want to give up their junk food, and I'm sorry, if you're obese, there's a high chance you have a food addiction. In fact, the processed garbage we eat all the time is designed to get people addicted to it. They are calorie dense but not filling, designed to make you feel more hungry so you consume and buy more of their product.
    Even thin people can get addicted to food and become fat. It happens all the time now. It's why over 70% of Americans are overweight and nearly 50% are OBESE. You can't keep eating this garbage and expect results. I gave it all up, and I'm so glad I did. I went from 372 pounds to 187 pounds and I feel better than I've ever felt in my life. I was an obese child and adult, and I'm 39 now. People who say "well I've been fat all my life so it must be my genes" are completely wrong. Obesity is a cycle that's hard to break, because being fat makes it harder to lose weight (I know, should be obvious right?). All the hormonal changes that come along with being obese, the metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, diabetes, makes it much harder to lose weight... at first. But once you get to a certain threshold, your body starts to adapt. Once you feed it proper food, it adapts and the metabolic damage goes away.
    I wish it didn't take me 37 years to figure out the 'secret' to losing weight and keeping it off. Really it was no secret at all, and once I got past the 3 month hurdle of letting my body get used to clean eating, everything worked. If I could go back and tell younger me that this was all I had to do, I would have never gotten to almost 400 pounds.
